Insects and other invertebrate remains from the coffin of a 17th century bishop in Lund Minster, S Sweden

- An extraordinarily diverse and well-preserved material, including the remains of 47 insect taxa and 12 taxa of other invertebrates, extracted from the 17th century burial of Bishop Peder Winstrup in Lund Minster, is presented and discussed in terms of the treatment of the body, activities connected with the burial and faunal significance. The invertebrate assemblages include species from gardens, insects feeding on living plants as well as dried or decaying plant matter. Many of the species are regarded as closely associated with humans (synanthropic), and a number of these are associated with outbuildings, such as stables and cellars. The absence of species associated with cadavers (necrophilous taxa) in the studied insect material is significant. The most plausible explanation is that the bishop died, and was buried during the winter, when such species are inactive, and thus precluded from colonising the body. A number of species were recorded which are today rare or very rare in southern Sweden. This is a strong indication that they once were more common and widespread, perhaps due to a greater prevalence of their preferred habitats. Sweden’s earliest fossil bedbug is also amongst the finds.

- Denna artikel berör byggmästaren Adam van Düren, verksam vid Lunds domkyrka under 1500-talets första kvartal, och nyupptäckta fakta kring fyra av honom skulpterade porträtt. Sedan Historiska museets föreståndare Otto Rydbeck för ungefär 100 år sedan lade fram en hypotes om att det ena porträttet kunde föreställa van Düren själv, har detta tills nu stått oemotsagt. I artikeln argumenterar jag för att nämnda porträtt i själva verket föreställer kung Fredrik I, samt att det ingår i en serie av fyra kungliga porträtt, utförda 1524. Artikeln bör vara av stort intresse för såväl studiet av Lunds domkyrka som för dansk historia, inte minst vad gäller kungliga porträtt.

- ‘Altare beate Marie presentacionis’– a new reconstruction of the ruined altar belonging to Archbishop BrostrupBefore the extensive interior alterations of Lund Cathedral in 1833, only six stone altars, four relatively complete retables, and one fragmentary Madonna remained from the once vast amount of Catholic altars. At present only the stone altar in the crypt retains its medieval position, and only the retable of the High Altar is complete with its casing. Of the remaining retables only three main figures were known to have survived, until 1915 when ten minor sculptures were rediscovered, followed by three more in 1992. These thirteen sculptures once belonged to a retable founded by Archbishop Johannes Brostorp in 1483, but are presently incorporated in the High Altar and exhibited in the Lund University Historical Museum. In the adjoining Cathedral Museum, remnants of the casing of the retable have now been discovered as well. Furthermore, a previously unknown sketch of the retable has been found in the Antiquarian-Topographical Archive in Stockholm. In this article the new findings are presented in the light of the primary sources concerning the history and former appearance of the long lost retable of Brostorp, which may now be reconstructed with a greater degree of certainty than has previously been possible.

In search of New Sweden : Discovering the ‘American curiosities’ of Samuel Hesselius

- In 1736 Samuel Hesselius, former pastor for the Swedish parishes in Pennsylvania, donated a collection of ‘American curiosities’ to Lund University in Sweden. Within less than twenty years, however, the collection had apparently disappeared. In the course of the past three decades the lost ethnographic artefacts have received increasing attention, but for a variety of reasons the collection has remained undetected – despite its importance having been highlighted by scholars from several academic fields since 1871 and despite the fact that the majority of the ethnographic artefacts ultimately turned out to have been on public display throughout this period (albeit with erroneous provenances) at the Historical Museum. Through examination of the archives and collections of Lund University, we have now been able to trace Hesselius’s ethnographic material – one of the oldest and largest collections of its kind – so that it now provides an invaluable snapshot of early eighteenth-century America.
