    • The use of the V-shaped linker molecules 4,4′-oxydibenzoic acid (H2ODB) and 4,4′-carbonyldibenzoic acid (H2CDB) led to the discovery of two isoreticular Ce(IV)-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) of composition [CeO(H2O)(L)], L = ODB2–, CDB2–, denoted CAU-58 (CAU = Christian-Albrechts-University). The recently developed Ce-MOF synthesis approach in acetonitrile as the solvent proved effective in accessing Ce(IV)-MOF structures with infinite rod-shaped inorganic building units (IBUs) and circumventing the formation of the predominantly observed hexanuclear [Ce6O8] cluster. For the structure determination of the isoreticular MOFs, three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data were used in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. [CeO(H2O)(CDB)] shows reversible H2O adsorption by stirring in water and thermal treatment at 190 °C, which leads to a unit cell volume change of 11%. The MOFs feature high thermal stabilities (T > 290 °C), which exceed those of most Ce(IV)-MOFs and can be attributed to the infinite rod-shaped IBU. Surface and bulk oxidation states of the cerium ions were analyzed via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES). While Ce(III) ions are observed by the highly surface-sensitive XPS method, the bulk material contains predominantly Ce(IV) ions according to XANES. Application of the MOFs as catalysts for the catalytic degradation of methyl orange in aqueous solutions was also studied. While degradation activity for both MOFs was observed, only CAU-58-ODB revealed enhanced photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet (UV) light. The photocatalytic mechanism likely involves a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) from the linkers to the Ce(IV) centers. Analyses by XANES and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) demonstrate that leaching of Cerium ions as well as partial reduction of Ce(IV) to Ce(III) takes place during catalysis. At the same time, PXRD data confirm the structural stability of the remaining MOF catalysts.

    • WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, saw first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-deg field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366-959nm at R similar to 5000, or two shorter ranges at . After summarizing the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organization, science drivers, and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for similar to 3 million stars and detailed abundances for similar to 1.5 million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey similar to 0.4 million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects, and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey similar to 400 neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionized gas in z < 0.5 cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in field galaxies at 0.3 less than or similar to z less than or similar to 0.7; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using >1 million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; and (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at z > 2. Finally, we describe the WEAVE Operational Rehearsals using the WEAVE Simulator.

  • Predicting In-Hospital Acute Heart Failure Worsening in the Oldest Old : Insights from Point-of-Care Ultrasound

    • The decompensation trajectory check is a basic step to assess the clinical course and to plan future therapy in hospitalized patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). Due to the atypical presentation and clinical complexity, trajectory checks can be challenging in older patients with acute HF. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has proved to be helpful in the clinical decision-making of patients with dyspnea; however, to date, no study has attempted to verify its role in predicting determinants of ADHF in-hospital worsening. In this single-center, cross-sectional study, we consecutively enrolled patients aged 75 or older hospitalized with ADHF in a tertiary care hospital. All of the patients underwent a complete clinical examination, blood tests, and POCUS, including Lung Ultrasound and Focused Cardiac Ultrasound. Out of 184 patients hospitalized with ADHF, 60 experienced ADHF in-hospital worsening. By multivariable logistic analysis, total Pleural Effusion Score (PEFs) [aO.R.: 1.15 (CI95% 1.02-1.33), p = 0.043] and IVC collapsibility [aO.R.: 0.90 (CI95% 0.83-0.95), p = 0.039] emerged as independent predictors of acute HF worsening after extensive adjustment for potential confounders. In conclusion, POCUS holds promise for enhancing risk assessment, tailoring diuretic treatment, and optimizing discharge timing for older patients with ADHF.

    • Recognizing the possible beneficial effect of prebiotics in food, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) convened a Technical meeting to start work on the evaluation of the functional and health properties of prebiotics. A group of international experts agreed on guidelines, recommended criteria, and methodology for conducting a systematic approach for the evaluation of prebiotics leading to its safe use in food. It was recommended that a full expert consultation be convened under the auspices of FAO. This work provides governments, industry, and consumers with scientific advice in relation to functional and health aspects of prebiotics and general guidance for the assessment of prebiotics in relation to their nutritional properties or safety. These guidelines may also be used by Member Countries and Codex Alimentarius to identify and define what data need to be available to accurately substantiate health and nutrition claims.

    • Health claims for probiotics are evaluated by the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies of the European Food Safety Authority. Despite a substantial amount of basic and clinical research on the beneficial effects of probiotics, all of the evaluated claim applications thus far have received a negative opinion. With the restrictions on the use of clinical endpoints, validated biomarkers for gut health and immune health in relation to reduction in disease risk are needed. Clear-cut criteria for design as well as evaluation of future studies are needed. An open dialogue between basic and clinical scientists, regulatory authorities, food and nutrition industry, and consumers could bridge the gap between science and marketing of probiotics.
