    • We report the first finding of the grasshopper Aiolopus thalassinus (Fabricius, 1781) inthe Nordic countries. Two migrating individuals were attracted to light at a known hotspotof migrating moths near the southernmost tip of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, 8th of August2020. End of September hundreds of individuals had made landfall in a bay not far from thefirst locality. The mass occurrence followed after days of easterly or southeasterly winds,a strengthened high pressure over Russia, and an early morning with low-lying clouds.Aiolopus thalassinus is a long-winged grasshopper with strong flight capacity and a widedistribution across the Old World. It also shares some of the density-dependent behavioraland physiological characteristics of the migratory locusts. In Europe the northern continuousdistribution limit stretches through south Germany and middle Poland. The findings onGotland follow the first record in Lithuania, 2019, and a recent trend of expanding rangein south Germany which indicates a species expanding its distribution due to a changingclimate. The findings also show that this is a species capable of swarm migration and crossinga minimum of 170 km of open sea when winds are favorable.

    • The purpose of this article is to examine and compare the construction of a supposednew masculinity ideal, “the new man”, in relation to political leadership, andto interpret how the gender norms there within affect the credibility as a politician.The study extends to the reporting from 2010 in the daily newspaper DagensNyheter about three Swedish male elite politicians with various party affiliation andideologies. Our findings shows that flexibility is a prominent new-man-marker, thatthe relationship between flexibility and credibility as a male politician is complexand that in a Swedish/Nordic context the new man is constructed as gender equal.One conclusion is that some male politicians benefit more than others – who maybe pushing the boundaries (too far) for what may be considered as masculine –from being positioned within the discourse of the new man.

  • Inventering av barkkvastmossa Dicranum viride på Gotland 2016 : samtlistning och noteringar av övriga naturvårdsintressanta och skyddsvärda mossoroch lavar på besökta lokaler

    • På uppdrag av Länsstyrelsen i Gotlands län genomfördes en översiktlig inventering av barkkvastmossa Dicranum viride på Gotland under februari 2016. Inventeringen syftade till att eftersöka arten på potentiella lokaler med lämpliga förhållanden. Inventerings­ansträngningen kom att koncentreras till bland- eller lövdominerade skogar med hög luftfuktighet och långvarig skoglig kontinuitet av lämpliga substratträd, främst rikbarksträd med högt bark-PH, till exempel ask, ek, alm och asp. Arten påträffas oftast på lutande, senvuxna och knotiga stammar på lokaler med hög luftfuktighet, till exempel i närheten av vattendrag och sjöar. Arten är sedan tidigare känd från en lokal på Gotland i Natura 2000-området Brunnsrar i Etelhem socken.Barkkvastmossa omfattas av ett åtgärdsprogram för hotade arter som löper ut 2016. Arten ingår i Art- och habitatdirektivets bilaga 2 och är fridlyst enligt 8 § Artskyddsförord­ningen (2007:845) vilket innebär att det är förbjudet att i den omfattning som framgår av bilaga 2 plocka, gräva upp eller på annat sätt ta bort eller skada hela eller delar av exemplar. Arten är upptagen som starkt hotad (EN) i den svenska rödlistan 2015.På grund av tidsbrist inventerades ett 10-tal lokaler som vid en första anblick ansågs mer eller mindre lämpliga med avseende på arten levnadspreferenser. Den närstående arten nålkvastmossa D. tauricum är relativt vanlig på Gotland vilket avsevärt försvårar identifieringen. Det faktum av båda arterna sannolikt finns på lokaler med förekomst av D. viride gör arten mycket svårinventerad.Vid inventering belades därför varje fynd och mikroskoperades för att studera bl.a. cellängden i nedre halvan av bladet som morfologiskt skiljer arterna åt. Trots studier av många belägg i mikroskop hittades bara D. tauricum på de inventerade lokalerna. Även om barkkvastmossa är mycket sällsynt på Gotland är den med största sannolikhet förbisedd.

  • Stunning of iodide transport by (131)I irradiation in cultured thyroid epithelial cells.

    • The existence of thyroid stunning (i.e., inhibited thyroidal iodide uptake after administration of diagnostic amounts of (131)I) is controversial and is currently a subject of debate. To our knowledge, the stunning phenomenon has not been investigated previously in vitro. METHODS: Growth-arrested porcine thyroid cells that formed a tight and polarized monolayer in a bicameral chamber were irradiated with 3-80 Gy (131)I present in the surrounding culture medium for 48 h. The iodide transport capacity after irradiation was evaluated 3 d later by measuring the transepithelial (basal to apical) flux of trace amounts of (125)I. RESULTS: The basal-to-apical (125)I transport decreased with increasing absorbed dose acquired from (131)I; a nearly 50% reduction was observed already at 3 Gy. Stable iodide at the same molarity as (131)I (10(-8) mol/L) had no effect on the (125)I transport. Cell number and epithelial integrity were not affected by irradiation. CONCLUSION: Stunning of iodide transport is detected after (131)I irradiation of cultured thyroid cells. The degree of inhibition of transport is dependent on the absorbed dose.

  • Using machine learning to analyse player-specific ice skating characteristics to generate game-specific skating drills in professional ice hockey.

    • The purpose of this study was to develop a method which uses positioning data to analyse player-specific skating characteristics and to investigate the possibility to use machine learning to generate new individual and game-specific training drills. A real-time local positioning system was used to collect positioning data from a professional ice hockey team in the Swedish Hockey League. Positioning data and video were synchronized, and nine different skating characteristics were manually identified and tagged for two forwards. A cost function was developed to generate individual, continuous skating sequences and to create new individual and game-specific skating drills. Skating forward was the most commonly used skating characteristic for both player but the numbers of times the players used the different skating characteristics varied, (H(8)=23.2,  p=0.003). The number of skating characteristics between the two players varied, (χ2 (8, N=688) =3 4.0, p<0.001) as well as the time spent within each skating characteristic (p<0.001). The presented method can be used for performance analysis and shows promising results for creating individual and game-specific tests and training drills for ice hockey players, based on individual and game-specific skating characteristics
