  • Study of the Average Charge States of 188Pb and 252,254No Ions at the Gas-filled Separator TASCA
  • 2012
  • In: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 689, s. 40-46
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The average charge states of Pb-188 and No-252,No-254 ions in dilute helium gas were measured at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. Hydrogen gas was also used as a filling gas for measurements of the average charge state of No-254. Helium and hydrogen gases at pressures from 0.2 mbar to 2.0 mbar were used. A strong dependence of the average charge state on the pressure of the filling gases was observed for both, helium and hydrogen. The influence of this dependence, classically attributed to the so-called "density effect", on the performance of TASCA was investigated. The average charge states of No-254 ions were also measured in mixtures of helium and hydrogen gases at low gas pressures around 1.0 mbar. From the experimental results simple expressions for the prediction of average charge states of heavy ions moving in rarefied helium gas, hydrogen gas, and in their mixture were derived. • Parallel single molecule detection with a fully integrated single-photon 2X2 CMOS detector array
  • 2004
  • In: Journal of Biomedical Optics. - : SPIE-Intl Soc Optical Eng. - 1083-3668 .- 1560-2281. ; 9:5, s. 913-921
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present parallel single molecule detection (SMD) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) experiments with a fully integrated complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) single-photon 2 X 2 detector array. Multifocal excitation is achieved with a diffractive optical element (DOE). Special emphasis is placed on parallelization of the total system. The performance of the novel single-photon CMOS detector is investigated and compared to a state-of-the-art single-photon detecting module [having an actively quenched avalanche photodiode (APD)] by measurements on free diffusing molecules at different concentrations. Despite the order of magnitude lower detection efficiency of the CMOS detector compared to the state-of-the-art single-photon detecting module, we achieve single molecule sensitivity and reliably determine molecule concentrations. In addition, the CMOS detector performance for the determination of the fraction of slowly diffusing molecules in a primer solution (two-component analysis) is demonstrated. The potential of this new technique for high-throughput confocal-detection-based systems is discussed.

  • Effect of a magnetic field on energy transfer of band states to the Mn2+ 3d shell in the CdMgTe matrix with ultrathin CdMnTe layers
  • 2010
  • In: PHYSICS OF THE SOLID STATE. - 1063-7834. ; 52:1, s. 27-31
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The effect of external magnetic fields on two radiative (band-to-band and on-site) recombination channels in II-VI dilute magnetic semiconductors and related nanostructures has been considered. The 3d on-site emission of manganese ions in CdMgTe matrices containing periodic inclusions of CdMnTe narrow-band-gap layers with thicknesses of 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 monolayers has been investigated in magnetic fields of up to 6 T. It has been shown that, in a magnetic field, luminescence of manganese ions weakens because of the decrease in the rate of spin-dependent excitation transfer from band states to the Mn2+ 3d shell. The maximum suppression of 3d luminescence has been observed in the matrix with a CdMnTe layer 3.0 monolayers thick. This indicates that the main factor responsible for the energy transfer is the internal field near the CdMnTe layers, which determines the magnetic splitting and spin polarization of band states.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • CdTe/MnTe/CdMgTe quantum-well structures with one or two monolayers of MnTe inserted at CdTe/CdMgTe interfaces were fabricated. The spectra of the excitonic luminescence from CdTe quantum wells and their variation with temperature indicate that introduction of ultrathin MnTe layers improves the interface quality. The effect of a magnetic field in the Faraday configuration on the spectral position of the exciton-emission peaks indicates that frustration of magnetic moments in one-monolayer MnTe insertions is weaker than in two-monolayer insertions. The effect of a magnetic field on the exciton localization can be explained in terms of the exciton wave-function shrinkage and obstruction of the photoexcited charge-carrier motion in the quantum well.

  • Molecular Dissociative Ionization and Wave-Packet Dynamics Studied Using Two-Color XUV and IR Pump-Probe Spectroscopy
  • 2009
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 103:12
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of ultrafast wave-packet dynamics in the dissociative ionization of H-2 molecules as a result of irradiation with an extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulse followed by an infrared (IR) pulse. In experiments where the duration of both the XUV and IR pulses are shorter than the vibrational period of H-2+, dephasing and rephasing of the vibrational wave packet that is formed in H-2+ upon ionization of the neutral molecule by the XUV pulse is observed. In experiments where the duration of the IR pulse exceeds the vibrational period of H-2+ (15 fs), a pronounced dependence of the H+ kinetic energy distribution on XUV-IR delay is observed that can be explained in terms of the adiabatic propagation of the H-2+ wave packet on field-dressed potential energy curves.
