    • A millimeter-wave radio test-bed is implemented which demonstrates 16QAM transmission over 70/80 GHz band for data rate up to 10 Gbps. Performance of the 16QAM transmitter and receiver is evaluated in a loop-back lab set-up. With the proposed 10 Gbps on single carrier system architecture, it is possible to achieve 40 Gbps over a 5 GHz bandwidth when combined with polarization and spatial multiplexing.

  • Cerebrospinal fluid and plasma viral load in HIV-1-infected patients with various anti-retroviral treatment regimens

    • Highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) effectively decreases HIV-1 RNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma in controlled clinical trials. To study the virological effect in CSF and plasma achieved in routine practice, HIV-1 RNA levels were analysed retrospectively in 27 patients on mono-nucleoside reversed transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) treatment, 27 on dual-NRTI-treatment and 45 on HAART using a Roche Amplicor HIV-1 monitor quantitative PCR. A significant difference was found in the proportion of patients with a CSF viral load below 20 copies/ml between patients treated with 1 (0%) and 2 NRTIs (41%) as well as between those treated with 2 NRTIs and HAART (69%). The proportion of patients with plasma viral load below 20 copies/ml differed significantly between patients on HAART (47%) and those on 2 NRTIs (0%), but not between those with 1 (0%) or 2 NRTIs. In multivariate regression analysis, treatment regimen and prior anti-retroviral experience (but not treatment time) were independently associated with the CSF viral load. Plasma viral load was independently associated with treatment regimen and treatment time, but not with anti-retroviral experience. Dual-NRTI-treatment affects the CSF viral load substantially, while HAART is required to achieve an essential decline in plasma viral load.

    • The main idea of this paper is to compare the readout architectures for uncooled microbolometer focal plane detector arrays with respect to the detector and readout circuit noise. The comparison is done keeping the total power consumption of all architectures constant. Three CMOS readout architectures with different degree of parallelism are described in this paper: pixelwise, columnwise and serial. The noise model of the readout circuit is given. Also, the optimization for the lowest NETD (noise equivalent temperature difference) and estimation of the self-heating effect is presented.

  • Characterization of EDG receptor expression and proliferative response in cultured human BPH smooth muscle cells

    • The endogenous phospholipids, lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) are both known to generate a Vvide variety of effects in various cell systems by the endothelial differentiation gene (Edg) receptor family, including 7 different G-protein coupled Edg receptors.In this study, expression of LPA- and SlP Edg receptors was examined, and so was the effect with respect to proliferation on cultured BPH smooth muscle cells smc. Mmeover, theresponse on cAMP levels was examined. Finally, a potential link between activation of the MAP kinase cascade and the LPA stimulated proliferation was investigated.First, the RT-PCR analysis of the Edg receptors in BPH smc, demonstrated a heterogeneous expression including all receptors except the Edg6 subtype. Further, in contrast to LPA, the mitogen effect of SIP, demonstrated a concentration-dependent biphasic response, including stimulation below 1μM, whereas inhibition was obtained at higher concentrations. Forskolin induced a rapid and transient cAMP response in LPA stimulated cells, with a peak-value after 3 minutes. After 15 minutes the cAMP level had retmned to base-line level. However a gradual increase to 15% of maximum value was obtained after additional 30 minutes, and thereafter a gradual reduction was observed. The mentioned antiproliferative response generated by SIP could not be conelated to an intracellular cAMP increase. Finally, when the LPA treated smc was co-incubated with the MAPK kinase inhibitor PD98059 (10 μM) the mitogen response was eliminated.The cAIVIP increase, which was induced by forskolin, corresponds with mentioned antiproliferative effect whereas a similar con-elation was not obtained regarding SIP. The intracellular signal mechanisms triggered by LPA and S1P in BPH smc remain to be further investigated.

    • Background The endogenous substance lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) has been found to generate proliferation of cultured smooth muscle cells (SMC). Therefore, the effect of LPA on human benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) could be of interest.Methods The proliferative effect of LPA on cultured human prostatic SMC from specimens obtained at trans-urethral resection of the prostate (TURP) because of BPH, was analyzed by [3H]-thymidine and [35S]-methionine incorporation. In addition, LPA stimulated BPH SMC were treated with papaverin, forskolin, sildenafil or zaprinast, well known to increase the intracellular level of cAMP or cGMP.Results LPA produced a dose-dependent increase in BPH SMC, both regarding DNA- and protein-synthesis with EC50 values of 3 and 10 μM, respectively. Furthermore, both papaverin, a general phosphodiesterase inhibitor regarding cAMP hydrolyzes, and forskolin, an adenylyl cyclase stimulating agent, inhibited the LPA-stimulated DNA replication in a dose dependent manner with IC50  = 2.5, and 0.35 μM, respectively. cGMP increasing agents, such as the NO-donors SIN-1 and SNAP, produced a weak anti-proliferative response. However, both phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors sildenafil (Viagra®) and zaprinast efficiently blocked DNA replication. In addition, when the protein synthesis was examined, we found that the LPA response was significantly inhibited by forskolin and papaverin.Conclusions The major conclusion of this investigation is that the endogenous serum component LPA, is able to promote human BPH SMC growth. In addition, our study indicates that cyclic nucleotides can inhibit this effect. Future clinical studies will be needed to determine if different specific phosphodiesterase inhibitors per se or in combination could represent a new therapeutic possibility for the treatment of BPH.

    • Background: Symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis may vary greatly. Hence, for research purposes, there is a need for disease-like models of allergic rhinitis. In a preliminary study, involving 7 days' challenge with allergen, promising symptom consistency was obtained and dose-response to a glucocorticosteroid could, in part, be demonstrated. Objective: To establish this model of seasonal allergic rhinitis and test the hypothesis that mometasone furoate is more potent than budesonide as an antirhinitis drug. Methods: Thirty-eight patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis received treatment with spray-formulations of placebo, budesonide 64 kg, budesonide 256 mug, and mometasone furoate 200 mug in a double-blind, crossover design. After 3 days' treatment, individualized nasal allergen-challenges were administered daily for 7 days while the treatment continued. Nasal symptoms and peak inspiratory flow (PIF) were recorded. Results: During the last 3 days of allergen challenge without active treatment, consistent around-the-clock symptoms were recorded and recordings during these days were used in the analysis. With few exceptions the active treatments reduced nasal symptoms and improved nasal PIF (P values <0.001 to 0.05). Budesonide caused dose-dependent improvements in evening symptoms, morning nasal PIF, and nasal PIF recorded 10 minutes after allergen-challenge (P values <0.05). Budesonide 256 mug produced greater improvement than mometasone furoate 200 mug for nasal PIF 10 minutes after allergen-challenge (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The present allergen challenge method, producing consistent symptoms and nasal PIF data, emerges as a model of seasonal allergic rhinitis well suited for exploring potency and efficacy of drug intervention. The present data do not support the view that mometasone furoate is a more potent antirhinitis drug than budesonide.

    • This paper presents the design and implementation of a low power, highly linear, wideband RF front-end in 90nm CMOS. The architecture consists of an inverter-like common gate low noise amplifier followed by a passive ring mixer. The proposed architecture achieves high linearity in a wide band (0.5-6GHz) at very low power. Therefore, it is a suitable choice for software defined radio (SDR) receivers. The chip measurement results indicate that the inverter-like common gate input stage has a broadband input match achieving S11 below -8.8dB up to 6GHz. The measured single sideband noise figure at an LO frequency of 2GHz and an IF of 10MHz is 6.25dB. The front-end achieves a voltage conversion gain of 4.5dB at 1GHz with 3dB bandwidth of more than 6GHz. The measured input referred 1dB compression point is +1.5dBm while the IIP3 is +11.73dBm and the IIP2 is +26.23dBm respectively at an LO frequency of 2GHz. The RF front-end consumes 6.2mW from a 1.1V supply with an active chip area of 0.0856mm2.

  • A Design Approach for Flexible RF Circuits Using Reconfigurable PROMFA Cells

    • This paper presents a design approach for flexible RF circuits using Programmable Microwave Function Array (PROMFA) cells. The concept is based on an array of generic cells that can be dynamically reconfigured. Therefore, the same circuit can be used for various functions e.g. amplifier, tunable filter and tunable oscillator. For proof of concept a test chip has been implemented in 90nm CMOS process. The chip measurement results indicate that a single unit cell amplifier has a typical gain of 4dB with noise figure of 2.65dB at 1.5GHz. The measured input referred 1dB compression point is -8dBm with an IIP3 of +1.1dBm at 1GHz. In a single unit cell oscillator configuration, the oscillator can achieve a wide tuning range of 600MHz to 1.8GHz. The measured phase noise is -94dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 1MHz for the oscillation frequency of 1.2GHz. A single unit cell oscillator consumes 18mW at 1.2GHz while providing -8dBm power into 50Ω load. In a single unit cell filter configuration, the tunable band pass filter can achieve a reasonable tuning range of 600MHz to 1.2GHz with a typical power consumption of 13mW at 1GHz. A single unit cell has a total chip area of 0.091mm2 including the coupling capacitors.

    • This paper presents design considerations for low power, highly linear currentmode LNAs that can be used for wideband RF front-ends for multistandardapplications. The circuit level simulations of the proposed architecture indicatethat with optimal biasing a high value of IIP3 can be obtained. A comparison ofthree scenarios for optimal bias is presented. Simulation results indicate thatwith the proposed architecture, LNAs may achieve a maximum NF of 3.6 dBwith a 3 dB bandwidth larger than 10 GHz and a best case IIP3 of +17.6 dBmwith 6.3 mW power consumption. The LNAs have a broadband input match of 50Ω. The process is 90nm CMOS and with 1.1V supply the LNAs powerconsumption varies between 6.3 mW and 2.3 mW for the best and the worst caseIIP3, respectively.

    • A new wire estimation technique is presented. It utilizes the topology of the netlist and is sensitive to the actual design. It has the unique quality to estimate the length of every power consuming interconnection individually. Compared to other wire length estimation techniques which use average or total wire length, the result of the new technique shows a strong correlation with the result of "real" automatic placement and route tools. Hence it can estimate a reasonable wire capacitance for each interconnection. The individual wire lengths, combined with individual node activities, are essential for an accurate power estimation.

    • In this paper, interconnection length estimation is discussed and a general, simple, fast and efficient estimation technique is proposed. In contrast to traditional average length estimation techniques, such as the one based on Rent's rule, the new technique utilizes the topological information of the actual netlist and estimates the length of each interconnection separately. The result of the estimation can be directly used to assign a reasonable R and C to each interconnect, including long and wide buses. Consequently, the new technique enhances the accuracy of power and delay estimations at higher design levels of abstraction

    • In this paper, we present a new technique which indirectly separates and extracts the total short-circuit power consumption of digital CMOS circuits. We avoid a direct encounter with the complex behavior of the short-circuit currents. Instead, we separate the dynamic power consumption from the total power and extract the total short-circuit power. The technique is based on two facts: first, the short-circuit power consumption disappears at a Vdd close to VT and, secondly, the total capacitance depends on supply voltage in a sufficiently weak way in standard CMOS circuits. Hence, the total effective capacitance can be estimated at a low Vdd. To avoid reducing Vdd below the specified forbidden level, a polynomial is used to estimate the power versus supply voltage down to VT based on a small voltage sweep over the allowed supply voltage levels. The result shows good accuracy for the short-circuit current ranges of interest.

    • The article describes qualitative variation in micro processes of learning, focusing the dynamic interplay between conceptions, expressions and meanings of expressions in students' learning in higher education. The intentional-expressive approach employed is an alternative approach to the function of language use in learning processes. In the empirical investigation, a dialogue model was used that both stimulates and documents students' ways of processing meaning. Results were grouped into three descriptive categories: vague, stabilising and developing ways of processing. Educational implications include, firstly, two distinct types of vague constitution of meaning in learning: one connected to fragmentary relationships between expressions and meanings, and another that triggers and creates close relationships and changes in relationships. Secondly, the categories display different unexplored ways of processing, related to deep and surface approaches in students' learning.

    • In research on learning, one of the fundamental questions concerns issues of language and thought. A number of empirical studies have revealed the interplay between understanding of subject matter and meanings of language expressions to be more dynamic and ambiguous than is commonly acknowledged. The aim of this article is to outline an alternative intentional-expressive approach to the interplay between use of language and understanding of subject matter as a contribution to the theoretical development in research on learning. The approach is based on a conception of language that focuses on the function of learners' language use in relation to subject matter in developing and expressing understanding. The learner is seen as an agent, and the focus is on the use of language from the learner's perspective. Four aspects of the relation between learners and subject matter are described and discussed. Conclusions concern the value of this approach as a complement and alternative to the dominant communicative and cognitive approaches to the role of language in learning.

    • Three pyralid moths, the Mediterranean flour moth (Ephestia kuehniella), the almond moth (Ephestia cautella) and the Indian meal moth (Plodia interpunctella), infest food products all over the world and cause severe problems in factories, shops and households. For health and environmentalreasons chemical control becomes more and more restricted. We here present some promising results offering efficient detection and control of these species based on semiochemicals, and line up a number of remaining questions to be answered in order to improve the reliability and competitiveness of the methods used. For P. interpunctella and E. cautella we found that more complex pheromone blends were superior to the commercially available one-component blend in attracting males, andshould be used if increased sensitivity is desired. The almond moth, males as well as females, can be trapped in buckets with tap water, which will give an estimate of the population level without use of pheromone traps. All three species show positive response to odours identified from chocolate, and this could possibly be developed further and used to determine relative population densities. For population suppression the pheromone-mediated mating disruption technique was employed inlocalities with infestations of all three species. Based on several indirect methods to estimate the population densities we conclude that this technique has a large potential for controlling all three mothspecies.
