  • Capital cities in Africa : power and powerlessness
  • 2012
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • "Capital cities today remain central to both nations and states. They host centres of political power, not only national, but in some cases regional and global as well, thus offering major avenues to success, wealth and privilege. For these reasons capitals simultaneously become centres of "counter-power", locations of high-stakes struggles between the government and the opposition. This volume focuses on capital cities in nine sub-Saharan African countries, and traces how the power vested in them has evolved through different colonial backgrounds, radically different kinds of regimes after independence, waves of popular protest, explosive population growth and in most cases stunted economic development. Starting at the point of national political emancipation, each case study explores the complicated processes of nation-state building through its manifestation in the "urban geology" of the city - its architecture, iconography, layout and political use of urban space. Although the evolution of each of these cities is different, they share a critical demographic feature: an extraordinarily rapid process of urbanisation that is more politically than economically driven. Overwhelmed by the inevitable challenges resulting from this urban sprawl, the governments seated in most of these capital cities are in effect both powerful - wielding power over their populace -and powerless, lacking power to implement their plans and to provide for their inhabitants"--Publisher description.

  • Families in Latin America
  • 2023
  • In: Handbuch Familiensoziologie. - : Springer. - 9783658352189 - 9783658352196 ; , s. 241-262
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this chapter, we ask What means Latin American family? First, we frame Latin American families from the socio-historical perspective, considering the works of Robichaux, about indigenous family patterns in Mesoamerica, and Therborn, who analysed creole families in the global context of the twentieth century. In the second section, a sociodemographic emphasis compares and contrasts family trends among Latin American countries with regard to other countries and regions of the world. The third and fourth sections develop issues concerning gender inequalities, gender diversity, sexual rights, migration, and the Pandemic. Sociological and political points of view fuse in the third, fourth, and fifth sections, which are among the most significant issues in the contemporary debate and their relation to families in Latin America. Selected cases of nation-states allow us to discuss the potential links between global issues and family life. At this point in the chapter, internal stratification remains evident, as is the phenomenon of inter-country inequalities in the region. Considering the “entanglement” between gender, race, age, and the resources needed for the daily life of Latin American families, similitudes, differences, and inequalities beyond the mere definition of family organisation arise. Moreover, the paper shows a persistent bimodal behaviour as a general pattern in one of the world’s most unequal regions.

  • Den ojämlika dödligheten : Hjärtdödlighet och samhällsutveckling i två städer
  • 2016
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Citizenship and Welfare : Politics and Social Policies
  • 2012
  • In: The Wiley-Blackwell companion to political sociology. - Chichester : Wiley-Blackwell. - 9781444330939 ; , s. 360-371
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The welfare of the people is an ancient political norm, much older than citizenship and civic rights. Modern social rights did not, as a rule, develop as citizens' rights, but as rights of classes and of other social categories. Despite the widespread politics of anti-welfare, social welfare has grown in various political contexts and forms. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, social policy became the focus of a vast body of international, comparative research in sociology and political science. The overall trajectory of this still-expanding scholarly enterprise may be outlined in the shape of three generations of investigation, each with a characteristic empirical focus and geopolitical orientation, and set in a specific socio-historical context.

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • It is always tempting for contemporaries to consider their times as exceptional. Still, today’s Europe does look very different from the one only one generation ago. This is not because social change was stalled or absent in the 1960s and 1970s. On the contrary! It was, quite rightfully, regarded as the time of turbulence which saw, just to mention a few social incidences, the expansion of education, the turn downwards of marriage and fertility rates, the shift towards the service sector, the finalization of the European welfare states, the return of women into the labour market, increasing affluence and the thawing of social and political cleavages. These changes took different forms in different countries, to be sure, and Western and Eastern Europe did display comparable but not converging patterns (Therborn 2000). Nevertheless, all of Europe was affected by similar and rapid changes.

  • African families in a global context
  • 2006
  • Reports (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
    • The family is one of the most important institutions of African societies. Where is it going today? How is it affected by global processes, cultural and political as well as economic? How does it compare with family developments in other parts of the world? These are questions, which this report addresses. It deals with – the African family in a comparative global context, focusing on patriarchy, sexuality and marriage, and fertility;– biological and social reproduction in Ghana under conditions of globalization and structural adjustment;– Nigerian marriage relations under the impact of current conditions;– family changes in the North (Britain) viewed from and compared with a family perspective from the South (South Africa).

  • 2023
  • In: Talking About Global Inequality. - Cham : Springer. - 9783031080418 - 9783031080425 ; , s. 31-38
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Göran Therborn is a global social scientist of Swedish roots and Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Cambridge, UK, and Affiliated Professor of Sociology, Linnaeus University, Växjö-Kalmar, Sweden. Having worked in and on all the populated continents of the world, he is a public intellectual with a lifetime commitment to universal freedom and equality, a supporter of anti-imperialist and egalitarian social movements, as well as a writer of and on Marxist and Radical theory. Therborn is the author of numerous publications such as Inequality and the Labyrinths of Democracy (2020), The Killing Fields of Inequality (2013), and The World (2011). In this essay, Therborn describes how his interest in global inequality started as a precocious preoccupation with imperialism during his childhood in Sweden, sparked by the Korean and Vietnam wars. This interest was later reinforced when as a researcher he travelled the world, experiencing first-hand, as a visitor, stark economic and other inequalities.

  • 1996
  • In: Childhood. - : SAGE Publications. - 0907-5682 .- 1461-7013. ; 3:1, s. 29-44
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The article analyses the different strands of public concern regarding children in the course of the 20th century, and the political process and the ideological constellation which led up to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The ratification of the Convention and its political effects in northwestern Europe are analysed. Finally, a set of hypotheses are presented about likely determinants of the impact of the Convention in different parts of the world.

    • GORAN THERBORN: Class in the 21st Century From Sao Paulo to Beijing, a rising middle class has been hailed by liberal commentators as a bulwark for consumption and democracy in the decades ahead. • End of a paradigm : the current crisis and the idea of stateless cities
  • 2011
  • In: Environment and planning A. - : SAGE Publications. - 0308-518X .- 1472-3409. ; 43:2, s. 272-285
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Urban studies in the social sciences have for two decades been driven by a hegemonic conception, under slightly different, competing labels: world city, global city, and world city networks. While making important cognitive contributions, it has, I argue, been fundamentally flawed in assuming nation-states and state-processed national economies to be unimportant to the world economy and to world/global cities. While in several ways enriching urban knowledge, its dominance has also impoverished urban research by reducing cities to zip codes of firms and labour markets, leaving out that cities are also places of meaningful built environments, in which people live and interact. Basic assumptions and arguments of the world/global city idea by the three most distinguished representatives of the approach John Friedmann, Saskia Sassen, and Peter J Taylor are critically scrutinized. The current economic crisis has demonstrated these assumptions and arguments about cities in the world economy as untenable. The economic crisis is spawning a paradigmatic crisis, which should be seen as an opportunity for wider views of cities to be opened up.

  • 2014
  • In: The Wiley Blackwell Companion to the Sociology of Families. - Chichester, UK : John Wiley & Sons. - 9781118374092 - 9781119406037 ; , s. 1-19
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Family-sex-gender relations in the world are patterned in seven major family systems, with distinctive power relations between men and women and between generations and with characteristic regulations and practices of sexuality and marriage. A summary of their principal features, internal variations, and twentieth-century developments is given. An overview of current tendencies of system change and of migration finds persistent diversity among the world’s patterns of family-sex-gender relations and little or no convergence.
