  • Resilient Data Aggregation for Unattended WSNs
  • 2011
  • In: Proceedings - Conference on Local Computer Networks, LCN, 2011. - : IEEE. - 9781612849263 ; , s. 994-1002
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Unattended wireless sensor networks (WSNs) collect and store sensed data in the absence of a base station (sink). WSN data aggregation is a widely accepted approach to improve storage and communication efficiency. But the vulnerability of low-cost WSN nodes to compromise makes the use of secure protocols mandatory. As most secure data aggregation algorithms use the base station as a trust anchor, unattended WSNs need new solutions for secure data aggregation. We address exactly this problem, proposing a new resilient data aggregation scheme that protects data integrity and remains robust to a wide range of attacks, integrating Quality-of-Information (QoI) as a defense mechanism. We argue that a QoI metric accompanying every aggregation result is necessary for the WSN user, to assess the quality of obtained data and detect errors or attacks. Even with a significant fraction of the WSN nodes controlled by the attacker, our scheme identifies and mitigates the effect of the attacks. This is supported by our analysis, with simulations of realistic strong attacks. The practicality of our scheme is supported by our proof of concept implementation.

  • State of the art and eVALUE scope
  • 2008
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • eVALUE will address the real function of ICT-based safety systems and their capability to perform the function through two courses of action: defining and quantifying the function output to be achieved by the safety system and developing the testing and evaluation methods for the ICT-based safety systems. The safety systems within the eVALUE scope are classified into four clusters: longitudinal, lateral and yaw/stability. The fourth cluster remains open for upcoming systems. Based on market availability and penetration rate, the consortium decided to focus on eight preventive or mitigating safety systems: ACC, FCW and CM by braking, in the longitudinal assistance domain; BSD, LDW and LKA, in the lateral assistance domain; and finally, ABS and ESC, in the yaw/stability assistance domain. Following the description of current test and evaluation methods, sensor technologies, system function output and ECUs globally applicable to ICT based safety systems, the report covers these technologies and components for the eight selected systems in detail. As a next step to this deliverable and according to the work plan, concepts for design reviews, physical vehicle testing as well as laboratory testing will be analysed. The result will be an in-depth understanding of the possibilities to investigate and evaluate the eight active safety systems within the first phase of the project. The different concepts will then support the decision about the development of the testing and evaluation methods that are able to point out the safety benefit of those systems in the most representative way.

  • Perspectives on plant photorespiratory metabolism
  • 2013
  • In: Plant Biology. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1435-8603 .- 1438-8677. ; 15:4, s. 748-753
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Being intimately intertwined with (C3) photosynthesis, photorespiration is an incredibly high flux-bearing pathway. Traditionally, the photorespiratory cycle was viewed as closed pathway to refill the Calvin-Benson cycle with organic carbon. However, given the network nature of metabolism, it hence follows that photorespiration will interact with many other pathways. In this article, we review current understanding of these interactions and attempt to define key priorities for future research, which will allow us greater fundamental comprehension of general metabolic and developmental consequences of perturbation of this crucial metabolic process.

  • ABO Genotyping finds more A2 to B kidney transplant opportunities than lectin-based subtyping
  • 2023
  • In: American Journal of Transplantation. - : Elsevier BV. - 1600-6135. ; 23:4, s. 512-519
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • ABO compatibility is important for kidney transplantation, with longer waitlist times for blood group B kidney transplant candidates. However, kidneys from non-A1 (eg, A2) subtype donors, which express less A antigen, can be safely transplanted into group B recipients. ABO subtyping is routinely performed using anti-A1 lectin, but DNA-based genotyping is also possible. Here, we compare lectin and genotyping testing. Lectin and genotype subtyping was performed on 554 group A deceased donor samples at 2 transplant laboratories. The findings were supported by 2 additional data sets of 210 group A living kidney donors and 124 samples with unclear lectin testing sent to a reference laboratory. In deceased donors, genotyping found 65% more A2 donors than lectin testing, most with weak lectin reactivity, a finding supported in living donors and samples sent for reference testing. DNA sequencing and flow cytometry showed that the discordances were because of several factors, including transfusion, small variability in A antigen levels, and rare ABO∗A2.06 and ABO∗A2.16 sequences. Although lectin testing is the current standard for transplantation subtyping, genotyping is accurate and could increase A2 kidney transplant opportunities for group B candidates, a difference that should reduce group B wait times and improve transplant equity.
