  • The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon in the Standard Model

    • We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant α and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including O(α5) with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by (mμ/MW)2 and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at O(α2) and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at O(α3) the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads aμSM = 116 591 810(43) x 10-11 and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7 σ. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. This and the prospects to further reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the near future - which are also discussed here - make this quantity one of the most promising places to look for evidence of new physics.

  • Inorganic geochemistry of lake sediments : a review of analytical techniques and guidelines for data interpretation

    • Inorganic geochemistry is a powerful tool in paleolimnology. It has become one of the most commonly used techniques to analyze lake sediments, particularly due to the development and increasing availability of XRF core scanners during the last two decades. It allows for the reconstruction of the continuous processes that occur in lakes and their watersheds, and it is ideally suited to identify event deposits. How earth surface processes and limnological conditions are recorded in the inorganic geochemical composition of lake sediments is, however, relatively complex. Here, we review the main techniques used for the inorganic geochemical analysis of lake sediments and we offer guidance on sample preparation and instrument selection. We then summarize the best practices to process and interpret bulk inorganic geochemical data. In particular, we emphasize that log-ratio transformation is critical for the rigorous statistical analysis of geochemical datasets, whether they are obtained by XRF core scanning or more traditional techniques. In addition, we show that accurately interpreting inorganic geochemical data requires a sound understanding of the main components of the sediment (organic matter, biogenic silica, carbonates, lithogenic particles) and mineral assemblages. Finally, we provide a series of examples illustrating the potential and limits of inorganic geochemistry in paleolimnology. Although the examples presented in this paper focus on lake and fjord sediments, the principles presented here also apply to other sedimentary environments.

    • Honeybees are one of our most important insects, not only for their pollination services but also for their production of honey. Honey is the main food for honeybees, produced from collected nectars and transported to the hive. Humans have consumed this mysterious food and applied it since ancient times in traditional medicine around the world. In 2005 we discovered an unknown key to honeybees’ health and to honey production, which was the presence of previously unknown species of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. These bacterial species are constant in all honeybees and present in large amounts in fresh honey originating in all continents. They work synergistically to defend their host against microbial incoming threats introduced by nectar foraging and end up in newly produced honey through detaching from the honey stomach. Our research has shown that these beneficial symbiotic bacteria possess antimicrobial characteristics and produce a myriad of bioactive metabolites that protect honeybees against pathogens and explain honeys’ therapeutically significant properties, known by humans since ancient times. Therefore, understanding of the mechanisms of action behind these characteristics through genomic and proteomic studies are crucial in order to find future alternative to antibiotics. In this chapter we discuss the importance of these microbiota in honeybee health and the traditional medicine that is honey with focus on future perspectives.

  • Molecular and Isotopic Composition of Hydrate-Bound, Dissolved and Free Gases in the Amazon Deep-Sea Fan and Slope Sediments, Brazil

    • In this work, we investigated the molecular stable isotope compositions of hydrate-bound and dissolved gases in sediments of the Amazon deep-sea fan and adjacent continental slope, Foz do Amazonas Basin, Brazil. Some cores were obtained in places with active gas venting on the seafloor and, in one of the locations, the venting gas is probably associated with the dissociation of hydrates near the edge of their stability zone. Results of the methane stable isotopes (δ13C and δD) of hydrate-bound and dissolved gases in sediments for the Amazon fan indicated the dominant microbial origin of methane via carbon dioxide reduction, in which 13C and deuterium isotopes were highly depleted (δ13C and δD of −102.2% to −74.2% V-PDB and −190 to −150% V-SMOW, respectively). The combination of C1/(C2+C3) versus δ13C plot also suggested a biogenic origin for methane in all analysed samples (commonly >1000). However, a mixture of thermogenic and microbial gases was suggested for the hydrate-bound and dissolved gases in the continental slope adjacent to the Amazon fan, in which the combination of chemical and isotopic gas compositions in the C1/(C2+C3) versus δ13C plot were <100 in one of the recovered cores. Moreover, the δ13C-ethane of −30.0% indicates a thermogenic origin.

    • The Synergy between PCI with Taxus and Cardiac Surgery (SYNTAX) trial was a non-inferiority trial that compared percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using first-generation paclitaxel-eluting stents with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in patients with de-novo three-vessel and left main coronary artery disease, and reported results up to 5 years. We now report 10-year all-cause death results.The SYNTAX Extended Survival (SYNTAXES) study is an investigator-driven extension of follow-up of a multicentre, randomised controlled trial done in 85 hospitals across 18 North American and European countries. Patients with de-novo three-vessel and left main coronary artery disease were randomly assigned (1:1) to the PCI group or CABG group. Patients with a history of PCI or CABG, acute myocardial infarction, or an indication for concomitant cardiac surgery were excluded. The primary endpoint of the SYNTAXES study was 10-year all-cause death, which was assessed according to the intention-to-treat principle. Prespecified subgroup analyses were performed according to the presence or absence of left main coronary artery disease and diabetes, and according to coronary complexity defined by core laboratory SYNTAX score tertiles. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03417050.From March, 2005, to April, 2007, 1800 patients were randomly assigned to the PCI (n=903) or CABG (n=897) group. Vital status information at 10 years was complete for 841 (93%) patients in the PCI group and 848 (95%) patients in the CABG group. At 10 years, 244 (27%) patients had died after PCI and 211 (24%) after CABG (hazard ratio 1·17 [95% CI 0·97-1·41], p=0·092). Among patients with three-vessel disease, 151 (28%) of 546 had died after PCI versus 113 (21%) of 549 after CABG (hazard ratio 1·41 [95% CI 1·10-1·80]), and among patients with left main coronary artery disease, 93 (26%) of 357 had died after PCI versus 98 (28%) of 348 after CABG (0·90 [0·68-1·20], pinteraction=0·019). There was no treatment-by-subgroup interaction with diabetes (pinteraction=0·66) and no linear trend across SYNTAX score tertiles (ptrend=0·30).At 10 years, no significant difference existed in all-cause death between PCI using first-generation paclitaxel-eluting stents and CABG. However, CABG provided a significant survival benefit in patients with three-vessel disease, but not in patients with left main coronary artery disease.German Foundation of Heart Research (SYNTAXES study, 5-10-year follow-up) and Boston Scientific Corporation (SYNTAX study, 0-5-year follow-up).
