- Universal Design (UD) is a design approach that recognises and anticipates diversity as a fundamental human condition. UD is also frequently referred to in relation to the social dimension of sustainable development. Central to both UD and sustainability is the way “everyone,” as the target of UD and sustainability goals, is understood. The purpose of the study is to identify how UD’s “everyone” is conceptualised in Swedish UD policy and to provide a set of recommendations for how to categorise people with regards to UD. A qualitative text analysis is used, which investigates semiotic modes in relation to the content, form, and social relations of texts. Based on the analysis, two challenges for UD policy are identified: (i) how to convey that UD is design for everyone, and (ii) how to move away from a thought pattern of norm and deviation. Seven recommendations for how to approach categorisations of people in UD policy are formulated. We argue that an adoption of UD has the potential to bring about sustainable living environments for all, if integrated with social, economic, environmental, and spatial dimensions of development, but that in order for this to succeed, careful attention needs to be paid to how UD is conceptualised, and a radically different way of categorising people is necessary.

The dis/ablement of bodies in semiotic landscapes – a citizen science approach

- Much of our built environment is constructed to accommodate ‘normate’ (Garland-Thomson 1996; Hamraie 2017) bodies. This fact may remain invisible to normate users of public space, much as the ordering of human interaction through categorisation is often invisible (Bowker & Star 1999). Reading semiotic landscapes through the dis/abling (Campbell 1999) of bodies that (attempt to) move through them, in this talk we investigate how dis/ablised bodies and places are co-constituted and how hegemonic constructions of space can be noticed and problematised.Data was collected using a citizen science approach (e.g. Purschke 2017), whereby the public were invited to contribute data on experiences of categorisation in relation to exclusion and inclusion in public places. This was done using a purpose-designed app. Participants were encouraged to take and submit photos, write a comment about the photo and their experience, and to select one of three emotions, viz. happy, sad, or angry. To date, around 100 submissions have been collected.Data is analysed using visual multimodal analysis (Ledin and Machin 2018, expanded to include movement through, and presence in, space, as well as properties ascribed to the particular body acting in the place). This is also combined with a critical, multimodal discourse approach to dis/ability (cf. Grue 2015; Machin, Caldas-Coulthard & Milani 2016). The data includes examples of both ablement and disablement. Participants’ choices and descriptions of physical objects and places (signs, the placement of buttons to be pressed, contrast markings, etc.) reveal bodily requirements (linguistic competences, body height and dexterity, sight, etc.) and pinpoint the body in the landscape.The talk adds to the field of Linguistic Landscapes by considering the dis/ablement of users in semiotic settings of signs and the built environment. - *Introduction* The adoption of Universal Design in European countries introduces a demand for and ex-pectations of a culture which supports equality and non-stigmatisation, treasuring diversi-ty and striving towards a society for all. *Background*Universal Design comes with a set of values, which create tensions between established practices based on “persons with disabilities” as a distinct, separate target group, and the “nonclusive” mindset of Universal Design. Seen this way, Universal Design challenges ex-isting categorisations of people into e.g. who is and who is not or can and cannot be “disa-blized”. Thus, it is important to understand how categorisations operate and what is need-ed in creating categorisations that enhance the development of Universal Design. How can a shift in categorisation grounds support Universal Design? Will it obscure or hide diversi-ty as a side effect instead of acknowledging and respecting it?*Method*This paper contributes new knowledge about the processes of categorisation operating be-low the surface amongst the tacit and yet tangible forces which create inclusion or exclu-sion. It seeks to examine and discuss categorisation as such and how dividing people into separate categories construct similarities and differences between people. The theoretical underpinnings of Universal Design have been described as being under-developed, and the paper is an attempt to strengthen Universal Design by scrutinizing its underlying assump-tions and categorisations. The paper draws on four studies that are part of a Swedish re-search project on categorisation and Universal Design, which focuses on categorisation regarding gender and dis-/ability and involves two disciplines: linguistics and design sci-ences. *Results*The primary kinds of material that will be used in the paper are results from studies of pol-icy documents, corpus studies of newspaper articles, and photographs contributed by par-ticipants in a citizen science study.*Conclusion*Analysis is still ongoing. Conclusions will be added in the final abtract.

- Hur kan kritik förstås i ett språkvetenskapligt sammanhang? Vad innebär det att inta en kritisk forskarposition som språkvetare? Vad kan man som text- och diskursanalytiker rikta sin kritik mot?Denna antologi tar ett samlat och bredare grepp om konceptet kritik inom språkvetenskaplig text- och diskursanalys med ett särskilt fokus på en svenskspråkig kontext. Boken innehåller såväl teoretiska diskussioner av kritikbegreppet som kritiska empiriska analyser. De teoretiska diskussionerna tar sig an kritikbegreppets innebörd, dess historia och vetenskapliga implikationer. Här bidrar bokens artiklar också med teoretiska utvecklingar av kritikbegreppet i relation till exempelvis genre, motdiskurser, tystnad och frånvaro. I de empiriska bidragen analyseras sociala och samhällsrelevanta fenomen såsom feminism, nyliberalism, rasism och propaganda utifrån kritiska perspektiv. De empiriska analyserna bygger på vitt skilda skriftspråkliga såväl som multimodala material. Bland annat presenteras kritiska analyser av nationella prov för gymnasiet, reklam för banker, IKEA-kataloger, vårdprogram för ätstörningar och synen på samiska barns språkundervisning. - This paper examines the relationship between language, (in)visibility, and (im)mobility in racialized spaces, focusing on Finnish, Somali, and Arabic speakers in Sweden. Using a theoretical framework based on hegemonic whiteness and intersectionality, the study explores how multilingual practices and subjectivities intersect with race, religion, gender, and class to shape social visibility and mobility. The research draws on linguistic ethnographic data, including interviews, linguistic landscape documentation, and an analysis of the media discourse. The study finds that while Finnish speakers have become invisible due to assimilation policies, Somali and Arabic speakers are hypervisible in Swedish public spaces and discourse, although Arabic speakers are sometimes, and in relation to other migrants, nearing Swedish whiteness. However, all three languages and their speakers are constrained by a white normativity that reproduces inequality. The paper challenges simplistic notions of mobility/immobility and visibility/invisibility in the context of a changing racial order in Sweden, where whiteness serves as a binary sorting mechanism that perpetuates inequality. Overall, this research sheds light on the complex entanglement of language, visibility, and mobility in white spaces and contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the intersectional dynamics of race and language.

- Ensuring the conditions for an inclusive society in the face of humandiversity places various demands on the built environment. Planning isessential for accommodating a wide range of individual preferences andabilities.This article examines the presence and absence of Universal Design (UD)in contemporary urban planning and construction in eight new or remodelledSwedish building and public space projects. The projects werestudied in-situ and via documentation from the planning and buildingprocess.The findings show two ways in which UD is present. The first is a patternwhere people are not separated from each other, whilst the secondis a pattern of facilitating equal use by placing low demands on users’abilities. It was revealed that UD was implemented more in remodellingprojects than in new constructions, which instead created new inequalitiesthrough categorisations of users and high demands on users’ abilities.They were also linked to an imbalance between green and socialsustainability.We argue that a change of mindset is pivotal for implementing UD.Human diversity must be a consideration throughout planning andbuilding processes, and creating a sustainable society requires UD. Thisarticle contributes new knowledge regarding patterns characterisingsuch a mindshift.

The image of the intended user reflects a disabling society that also is in conflict with established policies on a society for all. Patterns of inequality are found in the materials, both within and across groups of users. With youth, health, and mobility in the foreground, older persons and persons with disabilities are almost never evident. Disability is made visible only through its mirror: the ability norm. In the review of planning documents from a medium-sized Swedish municipality, the study sought to identify if and how users are described and to analyse which users are included in or excluded from the urban environment during planning stages. The article argues that new ways of thinking, to include a diversity perspective in planning, are needed.

- This article deals with the concept of critique by discussing and tracing theoretical definitions and epistemological implications of critique within three influential fields of discourse studies: Critical Linguistics, Critical Discourse Studies and Discourse Linguistics (Diskurslingvistik). The intention of the article stems from an observation regarding how discourse studies – at least in a Swedish context – tend to align with a critical perspective, yet without explicating it. Consequently, the article examines the following questions: What does it mean to conduct critical studies as a linguist? What traditions and theoretical contexts are the understandings of critique anchored in? What critical traditions have inspired discourse studies in Sweden? Drawing on the conceptual conflict between postmodern notions of knowledge on the one hand and populist and post-truth views on the other, the article concludes by arguing for the contemporary importance of linguistic critique.

- This study examines the discursive construction of ‘refugees’, ‘migrants’, ‘asylum seekers’ and other mobile humans in the Swedish press. Quantitative and qualitative methods from Corpus Linguistics and Critical Discourse Studies are combined to analyze a corpus of about 31 000 newspaper articles, published during 28 central months of the so-called ‘refugee crisis’, 2015–2017. The analyses show that many different labelling strategies are used to categorize humans that flee to Sweden into several sub-groups. These sub-groups are framed in different ways.

- Målet med språkaktivism är att förändra samhället genom att förändra språket. Språkaktivism bedrivs ”underifrån” i syfte att utmana och på lång sikt upphäva diskriminerande samhällsstrukturer.I den här avhandlingen undersöks diskussioner om feministisk språkaktivism som förts i Sverige från 1960-talet till 2015. Under denna period har kvinnorörelsen, homo- och bisexuella, trans*aktivister och queera personer skapat en mängd nya ord för att ifrågasätta och förändra rådande normer kring kön och sexualitet; ombudskvinna, hen, hoan, h@n, kvinniskor, intergender, cisperson och pansexuell är bara några av dem.Aktivistiska språkförändringar ger upphov till re_aktioner av olika slag. Dessa är inte sällan uttryck för ett försvar av rådande sociala och samhälleliga könsnormer. När det till exempel gäller det omdiskuterade pronomenet hen så är det inte kombinationen av bokstäverna h, e och n i sig som upprör, utan det är de normkritiska intentionerna bakom bruket av ordet som skapar debatt. Att vissa grupper aktivt förändrar språket och att andra re_agerar så starkt på dessa förändringar visar att språket tillskrivs betydelse för upprätthållandet av samhälleliga normer och maktstrukturer.I avhandlingen analyseras, utifrån en diskursanalytisk ansats, diskussioner om feministisk språkförändring som har förts i tre kontexter: inom aktivistiska grupper, i kommentarsfält på nätet och inom den institutionaliserade språkvården. Avhandlingens centrala forskningsintresse är inriktat på relationen mellan språk och kön och relationen mellan språkförändringar och förändringar i den utomspråkliga, sociala världen och hur dessa relationer förstås i de tre kontexterna.

- Åttonde nationella konferensen i svenska med didaktisk inriktning hölls på Södertörns högskola i november 2010. Temat för konferensen var Språket, kroppen och rummet – multimodala och digitala perspektiv på lärande. Konferensen samlade ungefär 140 deltagare och innehöll fyra plenarföredrag, trettiotvå sektionsföredrag och en forskningsstrategisk paneldiskussion om de nya kurs- och ämnesplanernas styrande funktion.De många presentationerna gav spännande och nya perspektiv på multimodalt och digitalt lärande i förskolan, hela grundskolan, gymnasiet, vuxenutbildningen och i vardagen och visade på bredden i forskningsfältet och på didaktiska möjligheter och utmaningar. De flesta presentationer behandlade barn och ungas produktion och användning av multimodala uttrycksformer, som film, bilder och digitala texter men även pappersburet skrivande och läsande inom olika genrer. Några presentationer problematiserade bedömningen av elevers multimodala och digitala kompetens och arbeten. Andra presentationer tog upp innehåll i och framställning av läromedel. Ytterligare andra förde en kritisk eller filosofisk diskussion om skriftens överlägsenhet, det skrivande barnet och läsandets rum.De fyra inbjudna plenarföreläsarna belyste konferensens tema utifrån aktuella forskningsprojekt. Elise Seip Tønnessen från universitetet i Agder utgick från projektet Multimodalitet, leseopplæring og læremidler och talade om ämnet Å lese og lære fra multimodal tekst. Charlotte Engblom från högskolan i Gävle talade om Barns skärmbaserade texthantering. Sammansatta texter och nya perspektiv på progression och bedömning med utgångspunkt i projektet Skilda världar? Texthantering hemma som resurs för lärande i skolan. Asta Cekaite Thunqvists, Linköpings universitet, föredrag hade titeln Multimodalitet ur ett andraspråksperspektiv: kroppsliga aspekter av kommunikation, undervisning och lärande och utgick från projektet Känslouttryck och informellt lärande i flerspråkiga klassrum. Patrik Hernwall, Södertörns högskola, avslutade konferensen med föredraget Digitala medier och ungas multimodala uttryck – nya möjligheter att skapa text utifrån projektet Ungas multimodala gestaltning – hur digitala medier kan användas för uttryck och reflektion.Två av plenarföreläsarna bidrar med artiklar. Elise Seip Tønnessen resonerar om skolstarten, skolans textkultur och barns naturliga multimodala utgångspunkt. Charlotte Engblom diskuterar det läsande och skrivande i vid bemärkelse som yngre barn ägnar sig åt i hemmiljö och i skolmiljö, främst via datorn, och hur det kan förstås utifrån en sociosemiotisk syn på texthantering.Här följer artiklarna från två av plenarföreläsningarna och ett urval av sektionsföredragen i bokstavsordning efter skribenternas namn. I en första avdelning har skribenternas sammanfattningar av artiklarna samlats.
