  • Efficient electro-demulsification of O/W emulsions and simultaneous oil removal enabled by a multiscale porous biocarbon electrode
  • 2024
  • In: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 1385-8947 .- 1873-3212. ; 481
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Emulsion wastewater contain substantial amounts of oil and various additives, which pose threats to the environment and human health. Demulsification is a crucial pretreatment stage for wastewater. This study aims to identify a novel electro-demulsification method with high oil removal efficiency and low energy consumption. Modified carbonized birch wood with a unique isotropic multiscale pore structure is used as a self-standing electrode to treat a toluene oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion. The electrode must have a highly porous structure to facilitate efficient water diffusion and oil adsorption. It must also have high electronic conductivity to expedite polarized molecular electrophoresis to realize penetration into the pores and, subsequently, demulsification. Guided by an applied electric field force, polarized O/W droplets are drawn toward the electrode, revealing electrical characteristics distinct from those of polarized organic molecules. This electric field force augments the capture and adhesion of droplets by the electric double layer at the electrode interface. Consequently, adsorbed droplets in close proximity to the electrode rupture due to the combined influence of the electric field force and the electrostatic effects stemming from the electrode's multiscale porous structure. This synergistic action enables demulsification to occur efficiently at low energy consumption levels. This study has revealed that electro-demulsification can effectively treat toluene emulsions stabilized by various surfactants and microemulsion containing toluene. Therefore, this electro-demulsification technology can be further developed for various types of water pollution.

  • Effects of an Innovative Training Program for New Graduate Registered Nurses : A Comparison Study
  • 2021
  • In: SAGE Open. - : SAGE Open. - 2158-2440. ; 11:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • New graduate registered nurses (NGRNs) face a great challenge during the transition from school to clinical practice. We conducted a quasi-randomized controlled study to evaluate the effects of a new training mode for newly recruited NGRNs in a Chinese teaching hospital. A total of 150 NGRNs were recruited from a teaching hospital and assigned into two groups. The conventional training and a new training program were taken for the control group and the research group, respectively. At the end of the training, the two groups were evaluated and compared for theoretical knowledge and operation skills using a mutual-evaluation examination and the Chinese Registered Nurse Core Competency Scale. The scores of theoretical knowledge (88.4 vs. 81.7, p < .001) and operation skills (94.8 vs. 90.3, p < .001), and the total core competencies score (156.2 vs. 148.8, p < .05) in the research group were statistically significantly higher than those in the control group. Compared with the control group, the research group also had statistically significantly higher scores in education and consultation (2.47 vs. 2.40), clinical nursing (2.87 vs. 2.62), interpersonal relationship (2.56 vs. 2.43), and critical thinking and scientific research (2.78 vs. 2.61). The innovative pre-job training program for NGRNs conducted in Chinese clinical nursing skill training bases might significantly improve the training effects and is worthy of broader implementation.

  • Pulmonary toxicity and adjuvant effect of di-(2-exylhexyl) phthalate in ovalbumin-immunized BALB/c mice
  • 2012
  • In: PLOS ONE. - : PLOS. - 1932-6203. ; 7:6
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Asthma is a complex pulmonary inflammatory disease, which is characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness, variable airflow obstruction and inflammation in the airways. The majority of asthma is allergic asthma, which is a disease caused by type I hypersensitivity mediated by IgE. Exposures to a number of environmental chemicals are suspected to lead to asthma, one such pollutant is di-(2-ethylheyl) phthalate (DEHP). DEHP is a manufactured chemical that is commonly added in plastic products to make them flexible. Epidemiological studies have revealed a positive association between DEHP exposure and asthma prevalence.METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The present study was aimed to determine the underlying role of DEHP exposure in airway reactivity, especially when combined with allergen exposure. The biomarkers include pulmonary histopathology, airway hyperresponsiveness (lung function), IgE, IL-4, IFN-γ and eosinophils. Healthy balb/c mice were randomly divided into eight exposure groups (n = 8 each): (1) saline control, (2) 30 µg/(kg•d) DEHP, (3) 300 µg/(kg•d) DEHP, (4) 3000 µg/(kg•d) DEHP, and (5) ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized group, (6) OVA-combined with 30 µg/(kg•d) DEHP, (7) OVA-combined with 300 µg/(kg•d) DEHP, and (8) OVA-combined with 3000 µg/(kg•d) DEHP. Experimental tests were conducted after 52-day DEHP exposure and subsequently one week of challenge with aerosolized OVA. The principal findings include: (1) Strong postive associations exist between OVA-combined DEHP exposure and serum total IgE (T-IgE), as well as histological findings. These positive associations show a dose-dependent low dose sensitive effect of DEHP. (2) IL-4, eosinophil recruitment and lung function are also indicators for adjuvant effect of DEHP.CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our results suggest that except the significant changes of immunological and inflammatory biomarkers (T-IgE, IL-4, IFN-γ and eosinophils), the pulmonary histological (histopathological examination) and physiological (lung function) data also support that DEHP may promote and aggravate allergic asthma by adjuvant effect.

  • Rewired m6A epitranscriptomic networks link mutant p53 to neoplastic transformation
  • 2023
  • In: Nature Communications. - : Springer Nature. - 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • N6-methyladenosine (m6A), one of the most prevalent mRNA modifications in eukaryotes, plays a critical role in modulating both biological and pathological processes. However, it is unknown whether mutant p53 neomorphic oncogenic functions exploit dysregulation of m6A epitranscriptomic networks. Here, we investigate Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS)-associated neoplastic transformation driven by mutant p53 in iPSC-derived astrocytes, the cell-of-origin of gliomas. We find that mutant p53 but not wild-type (WT) p53 physically interacts with SVIL to recruit the H3K4me3 methyltransferase MLL1 to activate the expression of m6A reader YTHDF2, culminating in an oncogenic phenotype. Aberrant YTHDF2 upregulation markedly hampers expression of multiple m6A-marked tumor-suppressing transcripts, including CDKN2B and SPOCK2, and induces oncogenic reprogramming. Mutant p53 neoplastic behaviors are significantly impaired by genetic depletion of YTHDF2 or by pharmacological inhibition using MLL1 complex inhibitors. Our study reveals how mutant p53 hijacks epigenetic and epitranscriptomic machinery to initiate gliomagenesis and suggests potential treatment strategies for LFS gliomas.

  • Mechanical property enhancement of NbTiZr refractory medium-entropy alloys due to Si-induced crystalline-to-amorphous transitions
  • 2022
  • In: Surface & Coatings Technology. - : Elsevier. - 0257-8972 .- 1879-3347. ; 433
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Crystalline-to-amorphous transitions induced by chemical modulation have been attracting great research interests and an in-depth understanding of such transitions is always demanding. Here we design the Nb-Ti-Zr-(Si) alloy systems employing the empirical criteria and the related phase diagrams for enhancing mechanical properties accompanied by Si-induced microstructure evolutions. (NbTiZr)100-xSix (x = 0, 3.0, 10.2, 22.2, and 25.0 at.%) refractory medium-entropy alloy (RMEA) coatings are synthesized by magnetron co-sputtering. With increasing Si content, the pristine body-centered cubic (bcc) single phase transforms into a nanocomposite structure consisting of bcc nanocrystals embedded in an amorphous matrix and eventually into an entirely amorphous structure. This is well rationalized with a thermodynamic database of the Nb-Ti-Zr-Si system constructed using the CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) approach, which suggests the bcc structure to be thermodynamically stable at low Si contents and the formation of amorphous RMEA to be preferred at higher Si contents. The superior mechanical property of the amorphous (NbTiZr)75.0Si25.0 (at.%) coating compared to the Si-free counterpart is achieved, i.e., the hardness (H) increases by 115% and the elastic modulus (E) increases by 70%. The Si-induced crystalline-to-amorphous transition in RMEA which leads to a consistently impressive strengthening effect was rarely found in other alloys or coatings.

  • Discovery of a radio jet in the Cloverleaf quasar at z = 2.56

    • The fast growth of supermassive black holes and their feedback to the host galaxies play an important role in regulating the evolution of galaxies, especially in the early Universe. However, due to cosmological dimming and the limited angular resolution of most observations, it is difficult to resolve the feedback from the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to their host galaxies. Gravitational lensing, for its magnification, provides a powerful tool to spatially differentiate emission originating from AGN and host galaxy at high-redshifts. Here, we report a discovery of a jet-like radio structure in a strongly lensed starburst quasar, H1413+117 or Cloverleaf at redshift z = 2.56, based on observational data at optical, submillimetre, and radio wavelengths. With both parametric and non-parametric lens models and with reconstructed images in the source plane, we find a well-separated, kpc-scaled, single-sided radio jet located at projected to the north-west of the host galaxy in the source plane. This could indicate the co-existence of feedback from the AGN by both wind and jet in the Cloverleaf quasar.

  • Synthesis of Self-Pillared Zeolite Nanosheets by Repetitive Branching
  • 2012
  • In: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 336:6089, s. 1684-1687
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Hierarchical zeolites are a class of microporous catalysts and adsorbents that also contain mesopores, which allow for fas transport of bulky molecules and thereby enable improved performance in petrochemical and biomass processing. We used repetitive branching during one-step hydrothermal crystal growth to synthesize a new hierarchical zeolite made of orthogonally connected microporous nanosheets. The nanosheets are 2 nanometers thick and contain a network of 0.5-nanometer micropores. The house-of-cards arrangement of the nanosheets creates a permanent network of 2- to 7-nanometer mesopores, which, along with the high external surface area and reduced micropore diffusion length, account for higher reaction rates for bulky molecules relative to those of other mesoporous and conventional MFI zeolites.
