- Läsåret 1988-89 ägnade Arkitekturskolans avdelning för restaureringskonst åt två större restaureringsprojekt - Svartsjö och Bogesund. Båda slotten står outnyttjade och erbjuder goda exempel på de tekniska och kulturhistoriska komplikationerna inom den kvalificerade byggnadsvården. I den föreliggande skriften finns både utställningen som visades vid Konstakademien våren 1989 och ett bearbetat förslag till ett resataureringsprogram för Svartsjö slott redovisade.

- Studierna har utgått från Ulriksdals slott, uppfört av Jacob De la Gardie för 350 år sedan. Som kungligt slott har Ulriksdal genomgått ombyggnader under 1600 - och 1700-talet, men präglas idag mest av Karl XVs omfattande omdaning på 1850-talet och Gustav VI Adolfs lika genomgripande förändringar på 1920-talet.Slottet har bjudit på rika studiemöjligheter av stilideal, planlösning, interiörgestaltning, snickerikultur och stormtekniska system från hela 350-årsperioden. Genom noggranna uppmätningar och inventeringar på plats kopplade till arkivstudier har slottets komplicerade förändringshistoria kunnat analyseras,

- Background: We wanted to study the effects of amphetamine on symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) over a longer period than has been reported in previous studies of central stimulants in this condition. Methods: Sixty-two children, aged 6 to 11 years, meeting DSM-III-R symptom criteria for ADHD participated in a parallel-group design, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of amphetamine treatment. Treatment was not restricted to children with "pure" ADHD, ie, some had comorbid diagnoses. In the amphetamine group, children received active treatment for 15 months. Results: Amphetamine was clearly superior to placebo in reducing inattention, hyperactivity, and other disruptive behavior problems and tended to lead to improved results on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children—Revised. Treatment failure rate was considerably lower and time to treatment failure was longer in the amphetamine group. Adverse effects were few and relatively mild. Conclusion: The results of this long-term, placebo-controlled study of the central stimulant amphetamine in the treatment of ADHD indicate that there are remaining positive effects of the drug 15 months after starting treatment.

- Under läsåret 1992-93 studerades Gamla Riksarkivet i Stockholm, ett unikt och välbevarat exempel på det sena 1800-talets byggnadstekniska utveckling och materialindustri. Bakom dess resliga tegelfasader döljer sig magnfika orörda interiörer i entréhall, trapphus och forskarsalar samt våning efter våning av magasinrum byggda av gjutjärn och stål. Byggnaden har utnyttjas osm depå sedan 1968 då det nya Riksarkivet i Marieberg invigdes, men står sedan 1995 utan användning. Den mycket speciella tekniska och funktionella uppbyggnaden ställer särskilda krav på en framtida användning. Ägaren Statens fastighetsverk söker nu en hyresgäst som kan tillvarata byggnadens historiska värde och fylla huset med levande verksamhet. Denna rapport bygger på det material som tagits fram i samband med studierna, såsom äldre beskrivningar, ritningar, fotografier samt noggranna uppmätningar av byggnaden. Gamla Riksarkivet har dokumenterats och analyserats ur historisk, teknisk och funktionell synpunkt. Arbetet har tidigare presenterats i en utställning om byggnaden med ett förslag till framtida användning som ett humanistiskt arkivcentrum.Genom publicering av denna rapport vill vi förmedla vår kunskap om byggnaden och dess unika kvalitéer.Vi vill tacka alla som gett sitt stöd och bidrag i arbetet, bl.a. riksarkivarie Erik Norberg, akrivredaktör Kerstin Abukhanfusa och vaktmästare Magdalena Salomonsson, samtliga vid Riksarkivet, samt fastighetsförvaltare Hadi Lotfi vid Statens fastighetsver.Fotograferna Kurt Eriksson och Bengt Lundberg har bidragits med material förutom de fotografier som tagits av arbetsgruppen.

- Läsåret 1990-91 har vi valt ett större restaureringsprojekt, Mälsåkers slott vid Mälaren. Tessinslottet från 1680-talet skadades svårt vid en brand 1945. Den avbrända takkonstruktionen rekonstruerades, de rötskadade bjälklagen byttes mot nya i betong och de gamla originalfönstren ersattes. Vårt syfte med Mälsåkersstuierna har varit att träna ett arbetssätt och utveckla en metodik för undersökningoch analys. Först därefter konkretiseras diskussionen om byggnadens användning med utgångspunkt från dess egna förutsättningar. Studier av allt från grund till takstolar, från yttre miljö tillinteriörer och snickeridetaljer har kopplats till arkivstudier och till undervisningen i övrigt. Målet har varit att visa hur byggnaden är konstruerad och på vilket sätt den utnyttjats under århundraden med förändringar av inredningar, rumssammanhang och konstruktiva system.

Studiernas syfte har varit attförsöka fånga kyrkornas specifika såväl estetiska som tekniska karaktäristiska och beskriva den utveckling som de representerar.

- Central stimulants in the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents. A naturalistic study of the prescription in Sweden, 1977-2007. Nord J Psychiatry 2009; 63: 508-516. Background: An increased prescription of central stimulants (CS) for treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents has been reported in Sweden. Aims: To follow-up the treatment with CS as concerns total as well as regional differences in prescription rate. Efficacy and side-effects reported and gender differences in prescription over time also have been summarized. Methods: Data from the Swedish Medical Products Agency (MPA) of individual licences, annual reports about patients on individual or clinic licences from the MPA and sales statistics from the National Pharmacy (Apoteket AB) have been used. Results: The number of new licences and prescriptions increased dramatically from 1992 to 2007 and a change of preparations was seen. Great differences (fivefold) between the 21 counties of Sweden were noticed. In the follow-up reports to the MPA, a good/moderate treatment effect was reported in 92% and adverse effects were reported in 4% leading to discontinuation of medication in 46% of them. Abuse/misuse of the preparation was suspected in 0.2% of the reports. A tendency of a reduction of the proportion of boys to girls treated through individual licences has been seen. Conclusions: The study, although observational, supports good efficacy, limited adverse effects and a low degree of misuse in clinical use of CS for children and adolescents with ADHD.

- Empathy in the doctor-patient relationship is of great importance and has long been considered a true professional virtue for doctors. Despite the general agreement concerning the importance of empathy, there is no consensus regarding the definition of empathy in medical research. While several quantitative studies, measuring empathy as an individual trait, show a decline in empathy among medical students, other studies have shown that empathy is influenced by contextual factors as well as the availability of role models. Therefore, further studies about the transition from medical school to clinical work also including the perspective of senior doctors are needed. The study presented in this article aims to better understand the clinical conditions for empathy through interviews with senior doctors about their lived experience of empathy. Twelve senior doctors, from different specialities were interviewed using a semi-structured approach. The data was analysed using content analysis. The analysis resulted in the main theme: Empathy as a silent art–a doctor‘s daily balancing act. This main theme comprised three categories: “A tacit, yet language-dependent process”, “A daily balancing act” and “An unsupported path towards mastery”. Doctors face many challenges in their daily balancing act between individual and structural conditions that may affect empathy. In order to maintain and further develop empathy, doctors need working conditions allowing for collegial reflection and conversations that promote empathy.

- Background: Empathy has long been recognized as a fundamental part of the professionalism of doctors and is considered to be both necessary and beneficial to doctor-patient relationships, although empathy is notoriously difficult to define and measure. Previous research on empathy has mostly consisted of quantitative studies measuring and evaluating empathy levels in students or medical residents. The aim of our qualitative study was to explore the lived experience of empathy among medical interns in Sweden.Method: We interviewed 16 medical interns, using semi-structured interviews. Content analysis was used to analyse the interviews.Results: The analysis led to the emergence of a main theme of empathy as being multifaceted and conflictual, consisting of descriptions (subthemes) of “being” and “doing”; of being uncontrollable and contextual; biased and situated and essential and conflictual. Since the components of empathy were also found to be interwoven, to provide a more holistic presentation of the results, we applied a socio-ecological model to the results inspired by Bronfenbrenner.Conclusions: We concluded that empathy is situated and contextual. By using the socioecological model empathy can be described as a systemic interaction between doctor and patient. Based on this we propose a more holistic approach to empathy in medical education to better prepare students for clinical practice.
