  • Electroweak measurements in electron positron collisions at W-boson-pair energies at LEP
  • 2013
  • In: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 532:4, s. 119-244
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the electron positron collider LEP at CERN from 1995 to 2000 are reported. The combined data set considered in this report corresponds to a total luminosity of about 3 fb(-1) collected by the four LEP experiments ALEPH, DELPHI, 13 and OPAL, at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 130 GeV to 209 GeV. Combining the published results of the four LEP experiments, the measurements include total and differential cross-sections in photon-pair, fermion-pair and four-fermion production, the latter resulting from both double-resonant WW and ZZ production as well as singly resonant production. Total and differential cross-sections are measured precisely, providing a stringent test of the Standard Model at centre-of-mass energies never explored before in electron positron collisions. Final-state interaction effects in four-fermion production, such as those arising from colour reconnection and Bose Einstein correlations between the two W decay systems arising in WW production, are searched for and upper limits on the strength of possible effects are obtained. The data are used to determine fundamental properties of the W boson and the electroweak theory. Among others, the mass and width of the W boson, m(w) and Gamma(w), the branching fraction of W decays to hadrons, B(W -> had), and the trilinear gauge-boson self-couplings g(1)(Z), K-gamma and lambda(gamma), are determined to be: m(w) = 80.376 +/- 0.033 GeV Gamma(w) = 2.195 +/- 0.083 GeV B(W -> had) = 67.41 +/- 0.27% g(1)(Z) = 0.984(-0.020)(+0.018) K-gamma - 0.982 +/- 0.042 lambda(gamma) = 0.022 +/- 0.019. • Den norska modellen : Medieetisk självreglering av radio, tv, webb och press - efter att politikerna backat
  • 2010
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Approaching media criticism : Reflections on motives, material and methods
  • 2009
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper will address the need for systematic analyses of various reactions against the media – in history and in the present. It will also deal with difficulties associated with this field of research; questions about suitable empirical material and methods.    Media development, media production, and media content are well known fields of research that mainly study media-institutions/organisations and their products. Media history has also (for obvious reasons) been characterized by this focus. To some ex- tent, victorious media institutions have influenced their own history.  We argue that it is necessary to take into account the fact that the media has always been embedded in the context of society as a whole – including  those who might object to the consequences of media in society. An abundance of criticism – from various directions (religious, political, philosophical etc.) – has at all times surrounded the media.  The criticism that media-organisations/content provoke offers a rich but often neglected source for thought on media and communication. This perspective opens up a wide horizon of possible studies and a number of theoretical and methodological ques- tions.

  • Citizens as Media Critics in Changing Mediascapes
  • 2011
  • In: Communication and citizenship. - Coimbra : Grácio Editor. - 9789898377159
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Media criticism often evolve – and grow in strength – during times of media change with new forms of journalism, new media formats, new media markets, new ways of addressing media markets and new media technologies. Different stakeholders may pursue their interests by formulating a media critique that protect their positions and promotes status quo. It is not difficult to find critics who in the name of the citizens formulate criticism against journalism and the media. It is more difficult to find and study representative examples of criticism expressed by the citizens themselves. The technological develoment on the internet has paved the way for a number of new communicative tools that enable users to interact with each other and publish content in a way that changes the conditions for citizens to act as media critics radically. This is an aspect of the internet’s democratic and participatory potential – and a key point in the rhetoric surrounding the concept “web 2.0”. In this paper we analyse and compare media critical debates during two periods of media change in Sweden: A) the debate caused by the launch of the tabloid Expressen in the 1950’s, and B) the critique against the new, commercially driven participatory news- and debate forum called Newsmill, launched in 2008. These historical and contemporary cases are used to enlighten a theoretical discussion about participatory online media’s potential for improving the conditions for citizens to act as media critics in a fruitful way. Both Expressen and Newsmill represent examples of journalistic innovations that affect surrounding media considerably. Findings suggest that there is much to be gained from analyses of criticism of new media phenomena from different times – for finding critical aspects for continued discussion as well as perspective on the contemporary debate about new media.

Both Expressen and Newsmill represent examples of journalistic innovations that affect surrounding media considerably. The result of the comparison point to a new dilemma related to the role of citizens as media critics in the digital age. The fact that the citizens themselves are now increasingly involved in the production of content, also puts them in a new role as defenders of the site that publish their content, against critics from traditional mass media.

  • Media Accountability Today... and Tomorrow. Updating the Concept in Theory and Practice
  • 2008
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Tony Blair demands it, Reuters wants it, the Spokane Spokesman-Review practices some of it and scholars try to define it – media accountability. The need for media accountability was formulated more than 100 years ago and made manifest with codes of ethics and ”bureaus of accuracy”. The Hutchins Commission used the concept in 1947 as a way to avoid government prescription of media content. The practice of media accountability has since been fueled by market expansion, looser regulation of public service and a technological facilitation of media/public interaction. In March 2007 these issues were discussed in a two-day international conference at the School of Communication and Design, University of Kalmar, Sweden. Scholars gave overviews of Media Accountability Systems (MAS), media journalism, media blogs and the effects of market-driven journalism on media accountability. Practitioners presented cases dealing with victims of the media in the United Kingdom, news ombudsmen and media critique in Scandinavia, and transparency in Spokane, Washington, USA. To the presentations from Kalmar the conference-initiator Torbjörn von Krogh has added a background chapter on the origins and rise of media accountability and some thoughts on its future. He also offers a new working definition of media accountability, building on the work of European and North American scholars: Media accountability is the interactive process by which media organizations may be expected or obliged to render an account (and sometimes a correction and/or excuse) of their activities to their constituents. The values and relative strength of the constituents vary over time and are affected by media systems and media technologies. Includes following articles: Ten things i want community leaders to know about journalism. A former (external) Ombudsman at the spokesman-review teaches media literacy (Gordon S. Jackson), Chink in a stone wall. A presentation of a readers’ Ombudsman at Bergens Tidende, Norway (Terje Angelshaug), When readers wonder. A column in Bergens Tidende with a comment (Terje Angelshaug), Watching the watchdog-watching Dog. A call for active press-councils (Claude-Jean Bertrand), “Constructive criticism” vs public scrutiny. Attitudes to media accountability in and outside Swedish news media (Torbjörn von Krogh), and Final words – new starting points (Torbjörn von Krogh).

  • The freedom of the press or the fear factor? : Analysing political decisions and non-decisions in British media policy 1990-2012
  • 2015
  • In: Observatorio (OBS*). - 1646-5954. ; 9:1, s. 001-016
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The four British Prime Ministers giving testimony to the Leveson Inquiry choose not to confront the media on issues of large-scale media abuse. "A missed opportunity", John Major said. "I think you certainly do fear the power being directed at you", Tony Blair declared. "We had no mandate", Gordon Brown asserted. The relationship between the media and politicians "has become too close", David Cameron stated. How did this closeness come about? This article discusses the political actors' decisions and non-decisions with regard to possible media policy strategies in Britain during four different Prime Ministers in the period between 1990 and 2012. The four cases examine media policy goals, values, contexts and alternatives offered for every Prime Minister. Their testimonies to the Leveson Inquiry are used for a comparison of media policy decision strategies during the examined period. Copyright © 2015 (Lars W Nord and Torbjörn Von Krogh).

  • 2010
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Changing Political Attitudes towards Media Accountability in Sweden
  • 2012
  • In: Central European Journal of Communication. - 1899-5101. ; 5:2, s. 205-224
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Considering the changes in media and in society that have occurred since the heyday of the Democratic corporatist model, with its strong emphasis on institutionalised self-regulation of the press (Hallin & Mancini, 2004), this article examines changes in attitudes towards media accountability measures among policymakers. Attitudes prevalent in the peak years of political pressure on the media system in the Democratic corporatist countries are compared with the attitudes existing today. The data studied are printed minutes of media debates in the Swedish Parliament in the 196os and similar debates during the last years, Sweden being a typical country for the model. The comparison indicates that both the views on media deficiencies and the views on remedies have changed over the last 40 years. Accountability measures are still in demand, although more through governance than from government.

  • From a Medical To a Human Rights Perspective : A Case Study of Efforts to Change the Portrayal of Persons with Disabilities on Swedish Television
  • 2010
  • In: International Communication Gazette. - : SAGE Publications. - 1748-0485 .- 1748-0493. ; 72:4-5, s. 379-394
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Studies from the US and Western Europe show that persons with disabilities were predominantly portrayed from a medical perspective in the media during the 20th century; that is, with the disability itself in focus, framed as a problem of the individual. Since the 1980s, the United Nations and disability organizations have tried to establish a human rights perspective: where persons with disabilities are seen as persons that do not yet enjoy equal rights, which is a problem that society has to resolve. What can disability organizations do to promote a human rights perspective in the mainstream media? This is a question raised in this case study of the efforts made by the Swedish Disability Federation to influence the public broadcaster Swedish Television. By using media accountability strategies, the federation managed to influence the corporation’s policy documents, diversity strategies, in-house education of producers and reporters, journalistic debates and, in some cases, journalistic output.

  • Media Governance from a Journalistic Perspective : A Case Study of Editors’ Attitudes Towards Media Accountability in Sweden
  • 2008
  • In: International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) 26 th Annual Research Conference, July 20-25, 2008, Stockholm.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Staying at the organizational level but focusing on journalism, media governance raises questions of self-regulation, accountability and autonomy in editorial departments, e.g. internal codes of journalistic conduct. This paper discusses the implementation and effectiveness of media accountability systems. The degree of professionalization of journalistic practices and the implementation of self-regulation are analyzed and related to the concept of media governance. Empirically, this paper is based on a national survey of Swedish Editors’ attitudes. In the survey different kinds of media accountability systems are evaluated and ranked by the editors: internal mechanisms, external activities and cooperative systems. This case study of Swedish editors’ attitudes towards different media accountability systems confirms that they prefer mechanisms that are not perceived as too negative. When editors pick and choose, the public relation dimension of media accountability is evident. But at the same time, their ability to exclusively select accountability options become more limited due to media globalization trends, new technology and media regulatory efforts on the international level.
