  • Medieval boat and ship finds from the former Norwegian province of Bohuslän: presentation and analysis
  • 2022
  • In: Revue de l'Archéologie du Bateau. - 2728-0861 .- 2728-4751. ; 3, s. 9-58
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper seeks to present, analyse, and discuss the entire body of medieval boat- and shipwreck data from the former Norwegian province of Bohuslän in present-day Sweden. This data currently comprises 11 wrecks dating between the 1230s and the first part of the 1500s. The analysis focuses on the questions of dating, building technique, hull size, provenance, and findspot. The results show that the vast majority of these wrecks constitute the remains of large sea-going vessels from Central and Western Europe, which underlines the growing importance of the Bohuslän coast as a transit route for international trade during this period. Another major finding, discussed in the present paper, is the fact that the bulk of the wrecked vessels is located in what may be defined as harbour or ‘near harbour’ contexts.

  • The Marstrand Cannon: The earliest evidence of shipboard artillery in Europe?
  • 2023
  • In: The Mariner's Mirror. - 0025-3359 .- 2049-680X. ; 109:3, s. 260-282
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Current knowledge concerning the introduction of shipboard artillery in Europe is limited. A small, muzzle-loading cast copper-alloy gun recovered off Marstrand on the west coast of Sweden may, however, provide some important leads regarding this development. Radiocarbon analysis of a piece of cloth from the powder chamber, possibly the remains of a cartouche, suggests a date for the cannon in the fourteenth century, making it probably the earliest example of European shipboard artillery found so far. In this paper we give an account of our recent investigations of this important find, which also include a geochemical analysis of the metal used for the casting of the gun.

  • Tracing Trade Routes: Examining the Cargo of the 15th-Century Skaftö Wreck
  • 2022
  • In: International Journal of Nautical Archaeology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1057-2414 .- 1095-9270. ; 51:1, s. 112-144
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Skaftö wreck of c.1440, situated north of Gothenburg, Sweden, was investigated between the years 2005 and 2009. Investigations revealed a variety of cargoes, such as copper and speiss ingots, barrels with lime and tar, bricks and roof tiles, and oak timber in the form of planks and boards. In order to identify the different cargo types found on the wreck, and, possibly, establish their geographical origin, a variety of analytical methods have been utilized. The present study accounts for the archaeological investigations of the cargo and for the analyses that have been conducted to date. Results are compared to and discussed in relation to other contemporaneous source material, both historical and archaeological. Based on this examination, it is concluded that the vessel was heading from the southeastern corner of the Baltic Sea, most likely Danzig (Gdańsk), aiming for the Western European market, possibly Bruges.

  • Laokoongruppen
  • 2023
  • In: Konsthistoriepodden. - : Acast. ; :31
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Gender and status competition in pre-modern societies
  • 2022
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This innovative volume of cultural history offers a unique exploration of how gender and status competition have intersected across different periods and places. The contributions collected here focus on the role of women and the practice of masculinity in setting as varied as ancient Rome, China, Iran and Arabia, medieval and early modern England, and early modern Italy, France, and Scandinavia, as well as exploring issues that affected people of all social rank, from raillery and pranks to shaming, male boasting about sexual conquests, court rituals, violence, and the use and display of wealth. Particular attention is paid to the performance of such issues, with chapters examining status and gender through cultural practices, especielly specific (re)presentations of women. These include Roman priestesses, early Christian virgin martyrs, flirtation in seventh-century Arabia, and the attempt by an early modern French woman to take her place among the immortals. Together this wide-ranging and fascinating array of studies from renowned scholars offers new insights into how and why different cultures responded to the drive for status, and the complications of gender within that drive.

  • Södra Råda projektet. Program för forskning- och utvecklingsarbete : Reconstruction of the Medieval Church Södra Råda. Program for Research and development
  • 2010
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Adapting to the Little Ice Age in pastoral regions : an interdisciplinary approach to climate history in north-west Europe
  • 2023
  • In: Historical Methods. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0161-5440 .- 1940-1906. ; 56, s. 1-20
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper uses interdisciplinary methods to investigate responses to the Little Ice Age in regions where livestock farming was dominant, a neglected subject due to the scarcity of detailed written records regarding pastoral land use. It argues that landscape-level histories which include pollen evidence and archaeology can address this challenge and reveal local processes of climate adaptation. Here we focus on Ireland and Scotland and a fascinating rise in small-scale cereal cultivation on upland pastures during the Little Ice Age. Bayesian modeling is used to test the chronological resolution of field evidence and compare it with climate reconstructions. We can see that the cultivation emerged in late medieval times, when cattle were facing climate-related stresses, and increased in early modern times during the Little Ice Age’s main phase. We suggest that it started in an indirect adaptation to climate change, supplementing supplies of food and fodder for pastoralists, but increased as rural populations and external market demands grew. There is a need for finer temporal resolution in pollen records and archaeology, as well as greater integration with socio-economic history, if we are to be more certain about changes in the relative significance of climate in pastoral land use.

  • Heritage Compensation in Changing Environments: The Case of the West Link Infrastructure Project, Gothenburg
  • 2021
  • In: European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) 27th Annual Meeting: Widening Horizons; Session: Compensation in Architecture and Archaeology - On Compensation as a Concept, Method, and Professional Practice, 6-11 September, 2021, Kiel (online). - Conference location: Kiel (online).
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Major urban infrastructure projects in old cities often encounter material historical features during planning or execution, presenting several challenges for local heritage management. Using the case of the West Link in Gothenburg, Sweden, this paper discusses compensation as an approach to integrating heritage conservation with new urban development. Compensation, in this understanding, denotes a rethinking of heritage values and qualities, and fosters new development directions. While recognised as an important planning instrument (Grahn Danielson, et al, 2013; Rönn, et al, 2017), compensation more broadly, also includes thinking of heritage in terms of the heritage paradigm (Ashworth, 2011), as a vector in spatial planning (Janssen, et al, 2017), and more. The paper analyses how all these approaches reflect in practice in one specific case. The West Link is a railway line currently under construction in Gothenburg. It burrows through the city’s 17th century fortifications, ancient agricultural properties, and historical parks – all of which are ‘national interests’ with architectural historical value. Since the project is deemed to be a threat to the cultural heritage, the Swedish Transport Administration (STA) – responsible for the project – and the City of Gothenburg are in talks on how best to work with the heritage. Their proposals for adapting it reflect their ideas about its values and qualities. The STA seeks to minimise heritage damage, while the City additionally proposes to ‘strengthen’ its value through new urban design programmes and increased accessibility to hidden sites. The paper situates their proposals and positions within the wider discourse on compensation. It further highlights the potential of cultural heritage to not only coexist with new development, but even become a decisive force in shaping future cities in moments of major transformation. This work forms part of a PhD on heritage planning in changing environments resulting from infrastructure projects.

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Major urban infrastructure projects in old cities often encounter material, historical features during planning or execution, presenting several challenges for local heritage management. Using the case of the West Link in Gothenburg, Sweden, this paper discusses compensation as an approach to heritage management in cases of large urban developments. The West Link is a railway line currently under construction in Gothenburg. It burrows through the city’s 17th century fortifications, ancient agricultural properties and historical parks. Since the project is deemed to be a threat to cultural heritage, the Swedish Transport Administration (STA) – responsible for the project – and Gothenburg City’s cultural administration, among others, are in talks on how best to compensate for the impact on heritage. The paper finds that compensation can take the form of storytelling, variously expressed by exposing archaeological finds, incorporating them into art and architecture, using digital storytelling techniques and linking project sites to their wider regions. Situating these within the wider discourse on compensation and critical heritage, the paper raises for discussion the extent of interconnectedness between heritage objects and their stories, the centrality of material and overlapping heritage approaches that come into play during planning.

  • 2021
  • In: Architecture, Archaeology and Contemporary City Planning Symposium: Cities in Evolution, April 26th-May 2nd, 2021, Istanbul (online). - Conference location: Istanbul (online).
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Major urban infrastructure projects in old cities often encounter archaeological remains during planning or execution, presenting several challenges for local heritage management. Using the case of the West Link project in Gothenburg, Sweden, this paper analyses the extent to which heritage-making as an approach was mobilised in using the material finds in the new urban development. Rather than viewing heritage conservation and city planning as conflictual, the paper sets out from the premise that heritage-making in situations of large-scale urban transformation can take different forms, and create new development directions. In the literature, these directions have variously been called compensation for cultural heritage damage (Grahn-Danielson, Rönn, & Swedberg, 2013, August), heritage as a vector in spatial planning (Janssen, Luiten, Renes, & Stegmeijer, 2017), the heritage paradigm (Ashworth, 2011), and more. The paper analyses the ways in which these approaches reflect in one specific case. The West Link is a railway line extension, currently under construction in Gothenburg. It burrows through the city’s 17th century fortifications, ancient agricultural properties, and historical parks – all of which are designated as ‘national interests’. Since the project is deemed to be a threat to the cultural heritage and the readability of the city’s architectural history, the Swedish Transport Administration (STA) – responsible for the project – and the City of Gothenburg are in talks on how best to deal with the heritage. This includes the archaeological finds unearthed in the process of digging, such as remnants of the former city wall, pieces of 18th century Chinese porcelain, and even entire boats. The stakeholders’ proposals for using the finds in the new development are informed by their individual ideas about the value of heritage. The STA’s proposals include exhibiting the objects in the newly built stations and distributing them across the inner city as ‘keys’ or ‘clues’ to history. The City, on the other hand, is less focused on the isolated objects, proposing instead larger urban design programmes encouraging reflection on past-present-future, and increased accessibility to hidden sites. Both parties see the finds as an opportunity to varying degrees. Through document analysis and primary data from interviews with representatives of the STA and the City of Gothenburg, this paper analyses their proposals for cultural heritage with a focus on the archaeological finds. It further situates their approaches within the literature on heritage-making. In doing so, the paper addresses the potential of cultural heritage to not only coexist with or be integrated into city planning, but even become a decisive force in shaping future cities in moments of major transformation. This work forms part of a PhD on heritage planning in changing environments resulting from infrastructure projects.

    • Postmedieval shipwrecks: reflections on maritime archaeology and historical archaeology with examples from the Baltic Sea That the brackish water of the Baltic Sea provides ideal conditions for preservation of organic material is a well-known fact. With this in mind it is a bit surprising just how little archaeological efforts that has been put into surveying these wrecks. The majority of these remains date to the early modern period. The study of these remains are thus associated with the assets as well as problems associated with historical archaeology. This paper reviews some of the research efforts carried out on wrecks in the past with focus on the relationship between history and archaeology. It is argued that the often claimed unique archaeological potential of the Baltic wrecks, tend to become overshadowed by narratives sprung out of written sources. The paper ends with a couple of examples of discussions that are only possible to raise from well-preserved shipwrecks. Inspired by phenomenology and the current research on historical buildings it is argued that ‘the lived experience’ is a possible way forward to raise other questions and to highlight other aspects of the past. The examples discussed are the everyday environment onboard fluits, a very common type of merchant ship, and the famous naval ship Svärdet that went down during a fierce battle in 1676.

    • This article is based on letters addressed to Arthur Nordén (1891–1965), from his Norwegian colleaguesAnton Willhelm Brøgger (1884–1951) and Sverre Marstrander (1910–1986) during the Nazi occupation ofNorway, which lasted from 9 April 1940 to 8 May 1945. The letters provide unique historical insights intoBrøgger’s and Marstrander’s activities during the war and reveal how they were engaging with Swedisharchaeological colleagues during the Nazi occupation of Norway. While there is no doubt the relationshipbetween archaeology and Nazism during the Second World War is a complex issue, and one that has beenaddressed by a number of researchers (e.g. Nordenborg Myhre 1984, 2002; Hagen 2002), these lettersreflect particular solidarity between Swedish and Norwegian colleagues. They act as aging photographscapturing unique insight into personal experience and agencies. The expressed solidarity in words andactions strengthened existing collegiality and friendships. The letters add to a more nuanced understandingof the history of our discipline.

  • In: Journal of Contemporary Archaeology. - : Equinox Publishing. - 2051-3429 .- 2051-3437. ; 4:1, s. 39-58
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article presents new findings from a contemporary archaeology project that has been exploring the Missile Crisis (1962) and its material and immaterial remains in Cuba since 2005. The project is a cooperation between Swedish archaeologists and Cuban archaeologists, anthropologists and historians, and its primary aim is to complement the dominant narrative of the crisis with material and immaterial remains and memories in a way that approaches and explains the event “from below”. The current text focuses on the life histories of a Soviet nuclear missile hangar located at El Cacho, one of the former Soviet nuclear missile sites located in Los Palacios, and of the US Marston mats that can be found at a number of locations in farmsteads and villages surrounding the former missile sites in the Los Palacios and San Cristóbal areas. The life histories of these objects in western Cuba present the reader with new insights concerning the crisis that until now have been more or less concealed and unknown, contributing new complementary dimensions to the understanding of the Missile Crisis while also challenging the stereotypes constructing the dominant narrative.

  • Afloat and Aflame. Deconstructing the Long 19th century Port City Gothenburg through Newspaper Archaeology
  • 2022
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In line with the international historical-archaeological discipline, this study aims to increase knowledge of marginalising processes and disenfranchised groups in the past and to contribute to the recognised Swedish need to augment the know-how of researching people ‘of little note’ in urban environments. The study aspires a theoretically engaged empirical alternative for developing new knowledge about urban places which are not possible to excavate or where archaeological data is insufficient, while evincing how digitized historical newspapers can step in as a multifaceted historical- archaeological source. By merging historical archaeology with digital history, the study has fashioned a newspaper archaeology, encompassing text-cavation and critical discourse analysis, and applied it to the empirical case, and fringe settlements of the port city Gothenburg, through local newspapers during the long 19th century. The suburbs have been hot topics discussed in, and by newspapers, and furthermore floating (signifiers), variously charged with meaning dependent on situation, correspondent, and text genre. By employing the concept of worldmaking, the study has recognised how inclusion and exclusion of people and spaces through text, encompasses international images, local events, notions of space and architecture, as well as actors − including newspapers and newspaper genres. The concepts of counter-voice and counter-narrative have acknowledged opposing perspectives which have shed light on inequal societal structures and grand narratives and displayed how people ‘of little note’ already from the late 1700s, took part in and reacted to what was printed, and negotiated values. Of the empirical chapters, chapter 6 demonstrates how the name Majorna was geographically floating, but the debate from the 1840s about the suburb Majorna’s integration with the city, anchored the name to a designated space, as well as ushered in a new sense of identity and attempts to fill this location with social meaning. Chapter 7 shows how from around the 1830s, newspaper genres and engaged citizens created in-groups and out-groups through the broadcasting of a mix of internationally spread notions of mariners and workers and bourgeois ideals, and how the space of the port district Majorna from the 1840s, intensifying from the 1860s, was intimately associated with deviant behaviour. Chapter 8 establishes how print representations of urban fires in the fringe had their own worldmaking effects on the creation of communities that bridged geographical and social borders and widened the urban landscape. Chapter 9 evinces how the genre of urban travelogues created othering and typecast representations of the suburb’s built environment and populace, by using internationally known tropes, sensual qualities, semiophores, characters, and narrative techniques, but also was complex and played a less-known role in upholding an informal donation culture. Newspapers as source may carry the only remaining information on erased landscapes, materialities, and social practices and newspaper archaeology can present us with voices from those ‘of little note’ and lesser means. The study demonstrates how newspapers are worldmakers and vehicles in the making of social and spatial inclusion and exclusion, with possibilities of steering debates and halting or accelerating urban change. Consequently, newspapers are not only a pertinent historical-archaeological source, but also affected the very society we study through the newspapers’ contents.

  • The Missile Crisis from a Cuban Perspective. Historical, Archaeological and Anthropological Reflections
  • 2019
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Previous works on the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) have approached the topic from the point of view of the U.S. and its allies, while Cuban experiences have still not been sufficiently discussed. This book presents new aspects which have seldom – or never – been offered before, giving a detailed account of the crisis from a Cuban perspective. It also investigates the archaeological and anthropological aspects of the crisis, by exploring the tangible and intangible remains that still can be found on the former Soviet missile bases in the Cuban countryside, and through interviews which add a local, human dimension to the subject.

  • Giles Land – a mystery for S.A. Andrée and other early Arctic explorers
  • 2019
  • In: Polar Research. - : Norwegian Polar Institute. - 1751-8369 .- 0800-0395. ; 38
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • After the initial discovery of Giles Land (Kvitøya, Svalbard) by Cornelis Giles in 1707, it was most likely never seen by anyone again until 1876. During this lengthy period, Giles Land evolved into an enigma as various explorers and cartographers came to very different conclusions about its probable location, character or even existence. In 1897, when the engineer Salomon August Andrée tried to return over the ice after his failed attempt to reach the North Pole in a balloon, he passed through an area approximately 160 km north of Kvitøya where Giles Land was indicated on his map. Andrée searched for it, but there was no land in sight. The main reason why Giles Land was erroneously positioned too far north was due to a conjecture by a German cartographer August Petermann in 1872. While there was some distrust of Petermann’s conjecture at the time, many also believed it. The erroneous understanding that Giles Land was in the far north was only finally dismissed in the 1930s. This article examines how this misunderstanding regarding the identity and location of Giles Land could arise and become entrenched.

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
