  • Time, space and young people´s agency in vocational upper secondary education : a cross-cultural perspective
  • 2010
  • In: European Educational Research Journal. - Oxford, United Kingdom : Symposium Journals Ltd. - 1474-9041. ; 9:2, s. 245-256
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article is based on ethnographic studies in the context of vocational education: two in Sweden and one in Finland. The Swedish data originate from the Vehicle programme and the Child and Recreation programme; the Finnish data originate from the social and health-care sector. In this sense, the authors’ perspective is cross-cultural. The article focuses on temporal and spatial dimensions of these three educational contexts and analyzes how young people exhibit their agency when negotiating their time and constructing their own space. The authors’ analysis elucidates how time–space paths in the context of vocational education are classed and gendered. In the female-dominated fields of vocational upper secondary education, disciplinary practices related to time and space are more visible than in the male-dominated fields. Moreover, it is argued that the political atmosphere in Sweden has been more favourable for promoting equality than that in Finland. Despite this, divisions between students and pigeonholing exist in everyday school life.

  • 2015
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Privatisation of public education? : The emergence of independent upper secondary schools in Sweden
  • 2011
  • In: Journal of education policy. - London : Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group. - 0268-0939 .- 1464-5106. ; 26:2, s. 225-243
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article explores the upper secondary (or post-16) school market. The study on which it is based, funded by the Swedish Research Council, was entitled 'Upper-secondary education as a market'. Empirical data include official statistics, policy documents, school publications, company reports and school visits. Printed and other news media were also scrutinised to identify how the marketisation of education is represented in public discourse. A number of themes emerged from the study which included mapping the expansion of the school market, chains of ownership and influence, marketing strategies, choice and the school market and issues raised in the media. These imply that there is a new market discourse which represents a clear break with previous social democratic education policies primarily aimed at enhancing citizenship and wider democratic values within an inclusive public school. However, critiques have also emerged including a call for strengthened regulations of and control over independent schools and concern about an education market equated more with shares and profits rather than pedagogy and student citizenship. Keywords: upper secondary education; independent schools; Sweden; privatisation; marketisation; education funding; profit-maximisation; discourse

  • Market competition in upper secondary education: : Perceived effects on teachers’ work
  • 2011
  • In: Policy Futures in Education. - Oxford : Symposium Journals. - 1478-2103. ; 9:2, s. 193-205
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The development and expansion of market solutions is one of the mostimportant changes in Swedish education in the last 30 years. The aim of the article is todescribe and analyse how students and staff in upper secondary schools perceive the impactof market competition on teachers’ work. Three groups of actors in two Swedish regionswere interviewed: students, teachers and principals. The interviews were carried out at eightschools in five municipalities, at both public and independent schools. The results show thatcompetition relations are more complex than is often assumed. Intensification of teachers’work is a common theme in the interviews. Traditional professional values and identities arechallenged by the market competition and a market-oriented teacher is shaped – whetherthe teachers like it or not. The extension of teachers’ tasks is increasingly about marketing. Anew type of service-minded and flexible teacher is created. Regarding the effects ofcompetition on teacher performance, the results are contradictory. The quality discourse isproblematised as there is no evident link between winners in the school competition and thequality of teaching and student outcomes. The Swedish case is interesting in theinternational literature as an example of a rapidly growing upper secondary school marketwhich is closer to the logic of the market than many other nations’ school systems.

  • Globalization and classroom practice : insights on learning about the world in Swedish and Australian schools
  • 2013
  • In: Nordidactica. - Karlstad : CSD Karlstad. - 2000-9879. ; :1, s. 104-130
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Globalization and global education implies changes to practices at the classroom level to adapt to new imperatives associated with technology use and awareness, and environmental sustainability. It also implies much more. It implies that teachers apply their classroom pedagogy to take account of students’ new found global understandings of which they, and the school community, is largely unaware. This article addresses and discuses three key consequences of globalization for classrooms worldwide; an increased diversity of experience of the students within the classroom, an increased competitiveness of educational outcomes between national states and subsequently some standardisation of curriculum across nations to enable this, and an increased emphasis on teaching skills and values associated with intercultural understanding. Young children’s map knowledge and their resultant, and associated, interpretations of the world from a comparative study a from Swedish and Australian primary classrooms is used as examples of some of these implications of the impact of ‘global culture’ and ‘global issues’ on current and future classroom practice.

  • 2004
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This thesis reports results from a study that focuses on how teachers experience the criterion-referenced grading system and how they say they use it in their professional work. The empirical study was carried out as semi-structured audiotaped interviews with thirty qualified teachers, in the subjects English, Maths and Swedish. The outcome of the qualitative analysis consists of four parts. In the first, the theme analysed was teachers' ways of experiencing the grading system as a phenomenon. This theme has an phenomenographic approach. The results are described in four hierarchically arranged categories. In the second theme, teachers' ways of using the grading system in their professional work was examined. Six situations were identified. In the third theme, teachers' experience of what aspects they discern in the student's grade, was in focus. Even here six categories were established. Finally, four different examples of attitudes towards the grading system and the grading process are presented as a fictional composite. The results show that the new criterion-referenced grading system in secondary schools in Sweden seems to funciton unsatisfactorily. Teachers seem not to have grasped the assumptions underlying the grading system. The change from grading based on quantitative aspects of knowledge to qualitative ones, was evidently too big a step. Instead teachers' assessment and grading follow ingrained habits.

  • Introducing assessment into Swedish leisure-time centres : pedagogues' attitudes and practices
  • 2010
  • In: Education Inquiry. - Umeå : Umeå University. - 2000-4508. ; 1:3, s. 197-209
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article analyses the findings of a survey exploring Swedish leisure-time pedagogues' experiences of assessment in school and leisure-time centres. It aims to boost knowledge of how assessment, as a prominent example of changed education governance, is entering the work of leisure-time pedagogues and how it is perceived by them. It is concluded that leisure-time pedagogues often assess the development of children’s social competencies, activities in their centre and the leisure-time pedagogues’ own contributions. Possible explanations of why these assessments are mainly based on informal observations without any documentation are discussed, as are the leisure-time pedagogues' ambiguous attitudes to them.

  • Därför läser vi litteratur
  • 2016
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Fiction-based ethics education in Swedish compulsory school – reflections on a research project
  • 2022
  • In: Nordidactica. - Karlstad : Karlstads universitet. - 2000-9879. ; 12:2, s. 84-107
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this article we draw conclusions from a research project in which a unique model for a fiction-based approach to ethics education was developed and used in three Swedish schools. Nine lessons were carried out during the 2019-2020 school year in five school classes: two in Grade 5 and three in Grade 8. Participating teachers worked with the researchers before and during the project to reflect on and develop the model. Moreover, five classes and teachers with their ordinary ethics education were engaged in the project. Theoretically, the project draws on the works of Martha C. Nussbaum in its choice to employ fiction reading in ethics education, and has a foundation in a sociocultural theory on moral development elaborated by Mark B. Tappan. The article’s aim is to critically reflect on the results and design of the project in relation to the theoretical underpinnings, with the purpose of offering reflections on ethics education for further development in both research and educational practice.

  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • They come from the north-east. On competition between schools, and student identity in Swedish as a Second Language. Current educational policy in Sweden is characterized by individual choice. Many students who opt for city-centre schools are students with a first language other than Swedish, choosing a school where the majority of students speak Swedish as their first language. Our aim is to analyse the discursive practices discernible in the discourse about students of Swedish as a Second Language (SSL) in a city-centre school. The data are collected from an ethnographic inquiry undertaken in a compulsory school attended by children aged 10–12. The results show how a child’s identity as an SSL student is linked to a market view of education. The SSL student is not just one who has recently immigrated, as is stated in descriptions of the subject. Nor are all students offered education in SSL, since teachers and school leaders claim a lack of resources. In this discourse, SSL students are described as belonging to a category separate from the supposedly normal student. Students from suburban schools are described as substitutes for those living nearby. This has created a dilemma for the school, which risks losing its symbolic value as a “Swedish” school.

  • In: The International Journal of Children's Rights. - Pa Leiden : Brill Academic Publishers. - 0927-5568 .- 1571-8182. ; 27:4, s. 694-718
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article examines the teaching traditions of children's human rights in four levels of education in Swedish early childhood education and school by drawing on a three-year long didactic (Didaktik) research project on the teaching and learning of human rights. The purpose of the article is threefold. First, the aims, content and methods used in the teaching of the four levels are compiled. Second, the main characteristics of the observed teaching are analysed. Third, the question of why rights are taught is examined using Roberts' concept of curriculum emphases (1982). The article identifies the aims, content and methods used within each level of education and the main characteristics of the teaching of human rights and shows that the teaching of human rights often consists of the content themes interaction and the life conditions of others. When further analysed, the main conclusion is that the teaching tradition of human rights is strongly rooted in the fundamental and democratic values on which Swedish education is based (Education Act, 2010) - a democratic curriculum emphasis.

  • 2007
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2022
  • In: Lärarens ledarskap - professionell pedagogisk praktik. - Malmö : Gleerups. - 9789151107172
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • 2023
  • In: Journal of Vocational Education and Training. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1363-6820 .- 1747-5090. ; 75:2, s. 323-348
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In vocational education, the learning content is often considered as concrete and specific, and the vocational learning involves physical work and interactions between participants and artefacts. Furthermore, one teacher has the overall responsibility for several students during classes in the vocational workshop at school, which means that the teacher has limited time for every single student and that the few minutes they meet become very important. However, the documented knowledge about how vocational learning is constituted in the vocational classroom and what learning content is focused on in the interaction between teachers and students is very sparse. In this study, we focus on how the enacted object of learning and its critical aspects are made relevant, when a student and teacher in a plumbing workshop session negotiate the conducting of a task in Swedish vocational education. This will be done by using CAVTA (Conversation Analysis and Variation Theory Approach) to make a close and detailed analysis of video recordings of the interaction between the student and teacher when a task is introduced in the workshop session. The results show a complex process, where the teacher alternates between parts and wholeness, using several semiotic resources at hand when highlighting the learning content.

  • 2009
  • In: Ejournal of All India Association for Educational Research. - 0970-9327. ; 21:1, s. 9-25
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article describes and discusses cases of distributed leadership at several levels in schools in the light of changing political discourses and changing relations between the state and its institutions. It focuses on relations, leadership influences and communication in the whole school and in the classroom and by extension also discuss relations, influences and modes of instruction in the classroom. The empirical basis for the discussion is school leadership in the Danish context. It explores how contemporary government and management manifests itself in schools, how agents in schools react to it and how room for manoeuvre is being formed in order to give students conditions and frameworks so they can develop a ‘Democratic Bildung’.

  • “One day, one problem” : applying SOTL on a course about teaching in higher education
  • 2015
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • At the Centre for Teaching and Learning at Umeå University, we are responsible for the development of university teachers’ pedagogical competence. One of the main purposes of our courses is to help teachers develop an array of teaching methods – including a sound basis for their decisions about which method to use. We work with teaching methods for student active learning that develop sustainable knowledge (Hattie, 2009), for example Problem Based Learning, PBL. Our problem is that this usually takes a lot of time on our short courses. So we asked ourselves: How can we use SoTL to describe, develop and evaluate a method that gives key transitions in the university teachers’ journey towards pedagogical competence, both theoretically and practically (Dietz-Uhler and Bishop-Clark, 2012)? We wanted a group of teachers on one of our courses to learn more about PBL and to be active while doing this. We also wanted a meta-didactic discussion about it afterwards. We found a method called “One day, one problem” (O’Grady, 2012) that we wanted to try. We had to redesign the method slightly to fit our context, by writing a relevant scenario in line with our expected learning outcomes. Apart from this we followed the suggested process in the article. We carried out formative and summative evaluations, and we as teachers documented the activity. Our preliminary analysis shows that this method gave us what we wanted since the learners were positive towards working this way, and the self- evaluated learning process and product was given high grades. Our preliminary results and conclusion is that this method is a useful way to both teach about the PBL process and to work with course content. We also saw that SoTL, systematically searching, finding, developing and evaluating a new teaching method is a good way to develop both our own and our students’ pedagogical competence.

  • Reports (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Since 2003 the University West in Sweden offers distance courses in Social work and Social pedagogy. The three year program is given in collaboration with a number of local learning centers throughout the country. The technology of videoconferencing enables the teacher to interact with students even though they are separated geographically. The study deals with this kind of education seen from the perspective of both students and teachers. The main objective is to illuminate significant aspects of this kind of phenomenon in terms of how students and teachers describe and experience problems and potential embedded in this model. The discussion rests on four overall questions:1) What are the motives for students to choose this kind of education?2) What kind of expectations did the students have before they started the program?3) How do students experience/describe strengths and weaknesses connected to this model?4) What experiences do the teacher's have working with this kind of distance education? The empirical data has been collected using mainly group interviews and observations. The analysis rests heavily on theories concerning symbolic interactionism and socio-cultural learning. The study underlines that both students and teachers embrace the potential in this form of education, giving more groups the possibility of combining their studies with a sense of regional belonging. However the interviews and observations also reveal weaknesses with this kind of educational model. There is a risk that students at the local learning centers consider themselves as being excluded by teachers and other students at campus; and that the gap between the university and the local learning centers becomes too wide. To prevent this from happening communication and confirmation from the teacher is crucial. But eventhough this scrutiny identifies weaknesses within the technology of videoconferencing, technology alone does not determine the outcome of the teaching. If a teacher manages to show great engagement and structure, this functions as a mechanism weakening the barrierof technology. At the same time it is clear that the model of videoconferencing, from a teacher perspective, can be an obstacle, which emphasizes the importance of developing the technology further and how this technology is being handled by the teacher. Finally, we consider the model with local learning centers and videoconferencing as a unique model for education, but that the model, when it comes to areas such as pedagogy, organization and technology, must be allowed to function and develop according to its own premises.

  • How to organise transitions between units in preschool : does it matter
  • 2010
  • In: International Journal of Transitions in Childhood. - Melbourne : The University of Melbourne, Australia. - 1833-2390. ; 4:1, s. 4-12
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this study is, to deepen our understanding of what transitions within a preschool institution mean from the perspective of those involved. The issue is important to focus on, since an overview of research shows, that there are hardly any studies made on transitions within preschools. In the study presented nine preschool teachers were interviewed, representing two preschools differing in approach regarding how the transitions between different units were organised. One of the preschools had “marked” transitions between four units for groups of children strictly based on age. The transitions were perceived as a matter of course, as something natural. The other preschool with only two groups,  one for younger children and one for older children, had “smoother” transitions based on individual considerations. Here, the maturity of the individual child was taken into account. In the interpretation of the results, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of the transitions for the people involved, using the concept of rites of passage, two approaches were revealed. The first regarded transitions to be a part of the pedagogy, supporting the natural development of the child, as a rite of passage, leaving one social stage in their life  and move over to another. The second saw transitions as necessary due to external factors, trying to attain a pedagogical environment, where transitions were as smooth as possible, with no marked rites of passage, not for the individual, not for the collective.

  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Based on four published articles on Swedish upper secondary school pupils’ use of online resources during essay writing in Spanish L3, this thesis in educational work and Romance languages focuses, from a language education perspective, on the use of machine translation. Two of the articles observe pupils’ use of online resources in general, and of Google Translate in particular, revealing a complex weave of strategies where Swedish, Spanish, and English are used to search, change and control word sequences, simultaneously including lexical, morphological, and syntactic aspects of the languages. The other articles study the effects of machine translation on text length and on lexical, morphological, and syntactic accuracy and complexity, as compared to texts written with printed dictionaries as the only translation tool. The results point to small but statistically significant positive and negative effects on complexity and accuracy. As for effects on vocabulary, the use of machine translation is shown to increase lexical diversity as long as it remains in use, the effect, however, vanishing when the tool is no longer utilised. In the introductory chapters of the thesis, the results from the articles are re-analysed from a Gibsonian ecological affordance perspective, focusing on the pupils’ explorative and performative interactions with the affordances of machine translation, and on the pupils’ strengths and challenges when handling the Spanish language. The thesis contributes to a deepened understanding of the complexity of foreign language learners’ interactions with machine translation, and further points to the importance of strengthening (meta-)linguistic awareness, linguistic self-confidence, and technological know-how in foreign language education. The thesis also underscores the importance of language teachers’ taking an active part in reinforcing the above-mentioned areas, and raises key questions about the future of writing in foreign language education.

  • Do Students Correctly Estimate Their Reading Ability? : A Study of Stockholm Students in Grades 3 and 8
  • 2011
  • In: Reading Psychology. - Washington, D.C : Hemisphere Publishing Corp.. - 0270-2711 .- 1521-0685. ; 32:4, s. 301-321
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Data from a survey in Stockholm are used to look at differences between how students´ self-concepts and self-efficacy relate to actual reading skills, differences between how boys and girls estimate their reading, and differences between how older and younger students estimate their reading. A quarter of the students made correct self-assessmmments of their reading. A majority overestimated their skills. The ability to self-assess reading skills among boys and girls seems to depend on how they are asked. There was only a small difference in favor of older students when students in Grades 3 and 8 were compared.

  • 2004
  • In: Nära gränsen? Perspektiv på skolans arbetsliv. - 919716707X ; , s. 153-181
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • I mitt avhandlingsarbete utgör empirin femtioniostudentbilder producerade under enåterkommande kurs i digital bild.

  • 2023
  • In: Forskning om undervisning och lärande. - 2000-9674 .- 2001-6131. ; 11:1, s. 107-111
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Migration and Recognition of Diplomas in Sweden
  • 2005
  • In: European Journal of Education. ; 40:2, s. 123-140
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Trans-national migration is now a global phenomenon, affecting an increasing amount of persons, many of whom have already completed a form of higher education in their country of origin or earlier residence at the time of migration. There is consequently a need to evaluate foreign degrees and assess migrants’ professional competence beyond their initial borders. Recognition of diplomas against the background of the integration process is the core of this article. Combining considerations regarding migration and integration of highly educated international migrants on the labour market of their target countries with a closer perspective on the process of validation of foreign higher education and professional competence in Sweden, the article treats this topic as a European example of the development of an issue of increasing importance in years to come.

  • 2024
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
