    • A continuous judgment by category-ratio (CJCR) scaling method was used to evaluate the instantaneous annoyance of original and modified aircraft sounds. The result from the proposed method resulted in a temporal stream of annoyance levels for the whole flyover sequence that could be further analyzed. The test subjects were continuously rating their instantaneous annoyance on a Borg CR 100 scale (R) during the playback of 10 flyover sequences. Using a category-ratio (CR) scale instead of a category (C) scale, mathematical operations such as calculations of average were enabled but gave also advantages in terms of higher resolution in the responses. The results showed differences in perception in the time segment where the sound had been modified. The temporal stream of annoyance was also converted into overall judgments of the sounds, these estimations showed consistency with previous results obtained using the semantic differential and paired comparison method.

    • The notion of polynomial hulls of compact subsets of complex Euclidean space plays a crucial role for approximation of holomorphic functions by polynomials - a topic which has many applications. Despite an abstract characterization of polynomial hulls in terms of currents, given by Duval and Sibony, it is often very difficult even for special classes of sets to decide whether the polynomial hull is trivial (i.e. coincides with the set) or not.An interesting observation is that Oka's description of polynomial hulls using continuous families of analytic varieties links this topic to the so called "continuity principle", the principle of compulsory analytic continuation of functions of several complex variables, which is a foundation of the notion of envelopes of holomorphy.Our first result states that there are Cantor sets in the unit sphere in complex Euclidean space of dimension at least three the polynomial hull of which contains interior points. (The case of dimension two was treated earlier by B. Jöricke.) Our result may be contrasted to a fact concerning analytic continuation: Cantor sets are removable, i.e. the envelope of holomorphy of the complement of any Cantor set in the unit sphere in complex Euclidean space of dimension at least three coincides with the whole unit ball.Our second result is the construction of an open connected subset of the unit sphere in three-dimensional complex space, such that the envelope of holomorphy of this set has infinitely many sheets. On the other hand it is known that the envelope of holomorphy of an open subset of a strictly pseudoconvex boundary in two-dimensional space is always single-sheeted.Our third result is a general form of the continuity principle which emerged from the correction of a respective erroneous result in the literature.

    • After a transition from sexuality to asexuality, the evolutionary dynamics in apomictic lineages will largely depend on the frequency of recombination. We evaluated the presence and extent of asexuality and recombination within populations of the Easter daisy, Townsendia hookeri, from the Yukon Territory, Canada. Amplified fragment-length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprints were used to genotype 78 individuals from four populations. Multilocus AFLP genotypes from each population were subjected to four tests for deviations from free recombination among loci, and the long-term frequency of sexuality was estimated for each population with a novel procedure. In addition, a sample of individuals was surveyed for genome size using flow cytometry, and pollen was assayed for male fertility. One male-fertile, diploid population showed evidence of rampant recombination. Two male-sterile populations (i.e., with aborted anthers) were tetraploid and asexual. The remaining population was male-sterile and included both triploids and tetraploids. Evidence of both sexuality and asexuality was uncovered in this mixed-ploidy population, at an equilibrium rate of approximately three sexual events every two generations. The presence and extent of sexuality differed with ploidy, while cryptic sex was uncovered within a morphologically asexual population, thus reinforcing the power of genome surveys to assess reproductive dynamics at the limit of a plant's geographical range.

    • Aims: The aim of this study was to describe a study protocol that evaluates the effectiveness of the ‘Home-but not Alone’ educational programme delivered via a mobile health application in improving parenting outcomes.Background: The development in mobile-based technology gives us the opportunity to develop an accessible educational programme that can be potentially beneficial to new parents. However, there is a scarcity of theory-based educational programmes that have incorporated technology such as a mobile health application in the early postpartum period.Design: A randomized controlled trial with a two-group pre-test and post-test design.Methods: The data will be collected from 118 couples. Eligible parents will be randomly allocated to either a control group (receiving routine care) or an intervention group (routine care plus access to the ‘Home-but not Alone’ mobile health application. Outcome measures comprise of parenting self-efficacy, social support, parenting satisfaction and postnatal depression. Data will be collected at the baseline (on the day of discharge) and at four weeks postpartum.Discussion: This will be an empirical study that evaluates a theory-based educational programme delivered via an innovative mobile health application on parental outcomes. Results from this study will enhance parenting self-efficacy, social support and parenting satisfaction, which may then reduce parental risks of postnatal depression.

    • EMC TESTING of autonomous vehicles is challenging because the involved systems are designed to identify unrealistic driving conditions, which is exactly what we have in a typical anechoic EMC chamber. When the system detects unrealistic conditions, autonomous driving functions are disabled or set to predefined states, which means that EMC testing of autonomous functions is not possible. To fully test autonomous driving systems, we therefore need to emulate a realistic environment in many aspects, i.e., we need to stimulate involved sensors in a realistic way.
