  • First observations of speed of light tracks by a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere
  • 2018
  • In: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1748-0221. ; 13
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25(th) of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Finally, we present a first reconstruction of the direction of the laser tracks relative to the detector.

  • Generic distribution support for programming systems
  • 2005
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This dissertation provides constructive proof, through the implementation of a middleware, that distribution transparency is practical, generic, and extensible. Fault tolerant distributed services can be developed by using the failure detection abilities of the middleware. By generic we mean that the middleware can be used for many different programming languages and paradigms. Distribution for each kind of language entity is done in terms of consistency protocols, which guarantee that the semantics of the entities are preserved in a distributed setting. The middleware allows new consistency protocols to be added easily. The efficiency of the middleware and the ease of integration are shown by coupling the middleware to a programming system, which encompasses the object oriented, the functional, and the concurrent-declarative programming paradigms. Our measurements show that the distribution middleware is competitive with the most popular distributed programming systems (JavaRMI, .NET, IBM CORBA).

  • The Impact of Aging-Preventive Algorithms on BESS Sizing under AGC Performance Standards
  • 2021
  • In: Energies. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1073. ; 14:21
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • It is normally accepted that Battery Energy Storage Systems improve frequency regulation by providing fast response to the Automatic Generation Control. However, currently available control strategies may lead to early Energy Storage Systems aging given that Automatic Generation Control requirements are increasing due to zero carbon power generation integration. In this sense, it is important to analyze the aging phenomena in order to assess the technical–economical usefulness of Battery Energy Storage Systems towards zero carbon power systems. In order to avoid early aging, various proposals on aging-reducing algorithms can be found; however, it is unclear if those aging-reducing algorithms affect the performance of Battery Energy Storage Systems. It is also unclear whether those effects must be internalized to properly dimension the capacity of Battery Energy Storage Systems to both comply with performance standards and to prevent early aging. Thus, this paper estimates the storage capacity of a Battery Energy Storage Systems to comply with Automatic Generation Control performance standard under aging-reducing operating algorithms by dynamics simulations of a reduced-order, empirically-validated model of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. The results show the relationship between the required performance of Automatic Generation Control and Battery Energy Storage System capacity, considering a 1-year simulation of Automatic Generation Control dynamics. It can be concluded that the compliance with performance standards is strongly related to the storage capacity, regardless of how fast the device can inject or withdraw power from the grid. Previous results in the state-of-the-art overlook the quantification of this relationship between compliance with performance standards and storage capacity.

  • Continuous biodegradation of 17 beta-estradiol and 17 alpha-ethynylestradiol by Trametes versicolor
  • 2008
  • In: Journal of Hazardous Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-3336 .- 0304-3894. ; 150:2, s. 459-462
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The feasibility of 17 beta-estradiol (E2) and 17 alpha-ethynylestradiol (EE2) removal by Trametes versicolor was demonstrated in batch and continuous cultures. In batch, E2 and EE2 initially supplied at 10 mg l(-1) were removed by more than 97% in 24 h, which corresponded to volumetric removal rates of 0.43 and 0.44 mg l(-1) h(-1), respectively. A bioreactor inoculated with T versicolor pellets was then continuously operated during 26 days at a hydraulic retention time of 120 h. E2 and EE2 were completely removed at volumetric removal rates of 0.16 and 0.09 mg l(-1) h(-1), respectively, when fed at 18.8 and 7.3 mg l(-1), respectively. Evidence was found that removal was caused by laccase. This study demonstrates the technical feasibility of fungal treatment of estrogens using continuous bioreactor with suspended fungal biomass.

  • Formation of CO+ by radiative association
  • 2019
  • In: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 489:2, s. 2954-2960
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We theoretically estimate formation rate coefficients for CO+ through the radiative association of C+(P-2) with O(P-3). In 1989, Petuchowski et al. claimed radiative association to be the most important route for CO+ formation in SN 1987A. In 1990, Dalgarno, Du and You challenged this claim. Therefore, in this study, we improve previous estimates of the radiative association rate coefficients for forming CO+ from C+(P-2) and O(P-3). To do this, we perform quantum mechanically based perturbation theory calculations as well as semiclassical calculations, which are combined with Breit-Wigner theory in order to add the effect of shape resonances. We explicitly include four electronic transitions. The required potential energy and transition dipole-moment curves are obtained through large basis set multireference configuration interaction electronic structure calculations. We report cross-sections and from these we obtain rate coefficients in the range of 10-10 000 K, finding that the CO+ formation rate coefficient is larger than the previous estimate by Dalgarno et al. Still our results support their claim that in SN 1987A, CO is mainly formed through radiative association and not through the charge transfer reaction CO+ + O -> CO + O+ as earlier suggested by Petuchowski et al.
