  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The project presented in this paper focuses on how people are mentioned in dissertation acknowledgements from Uppsala University, depending on the language in which the acknowledgements are written. Acknowledgements in German, Swedish and English from the period 1970-2012 have been examined regarding the use of titles and names. The study shows that – regardless of the language – most people (with the exception of family members) are mentioned by title in the acknowledgements from the early 1970s; by the end of the investigated period, titles have become much less common in the acknowledgements written in Swedish and English, and many people – especially once their family names have been mentioned – are only referred to by their first names. Acknowledgements in German, on the other hand, still feature titles and family names to almost the same extent as in the 1970s.
