Many studies have claimed that fathers’ parental leave may hardly eradicate deep-rooted gender divisions between men and women, and fathers’ care-giving is a temporary phenomenon during their parental leave. However, this study demonstrates that gender per se is a concept constructed by repeating gender-specific behaviors, not by biological features. Thus, by repeatedly performing care-giving and housekeeping, fathers on parental leave come to doubt the given gender roles and can develop alternative views on the dominant gender structure. This in-depth analysis on fathers’ changes through parental leave suggests that fathers’ parental leave can contribute to a gender-equal society as well as sharing domestic chores.
