  • Hagar Olsson and the Soldier of Modernism - War, Brutality and Borders in the Interwar Period
  • 2019
  • In: A Cultural History of the Avant-Garde in the Nordic Countries 1925-1950 / Editors: Benedikt Hjartarson, Andrea Kollnitz, Per Stounbjerg and Tania Ørum. - Leiden, Boston : Brill Rodopi. - 9789004388291 ; , s. 730-745
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • For the Swedish-speaking Finnish writer and critic Hagar Olsson, modernism and war were closely connected. Modern art was perceived not just as brutal and provocative in itself, but as arising from the fierce energies of World War I and at the same time embodying a protest against it. This essay examines how Olsson simultaneously appropriated and critically assessed different avant-garde aesthetics in her utopian and anti-militarist photo-novel På Kanaanexpressen (On the Caanan Express, 1929). It is viewed as part of a more widespread tendency among Nordic artists during the 1920s to deal with war and revolution as a way of testing avant-garde aesthetics/ideology “at home”. Whereas other novels by Emil Bønnelycke, Tom Kristensen and Elmer Diktonius also exhibit ambivalent attitudes to the ties between violence, masculinity and avant-garde aesthetics, Olsson’s novel stands out as even more radical in its experimental form as well as offering a more complex analysis of the role of gender.

  • 2019
  • In: Swedish Women's Writing on Export: Tracing Transnational Reception in the Nineteenth Century / Yvonne Leffler, Åsa Arping, Jenny Bergenmar, Gunilla Hermansson & Birgitta Johansson Lindh. - Gothenburg : LIR.skrifter. - 9789188348968 ; , s. 33-95
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The chapter brings several general problems to the fore. One of them is the status of poetry in current research on translation and reception within world literature research and theory. Gunilla Hermansson discusses this and the accompanying methodological difficulties, as well as the future potential of computer-aided analysis in this context. Nyberg’s international fate demonstrates the significance of gender, genre, and images of the nation for the reception of poetry at large and Swedish romantic poetry specifically. It also necessitates an examination and critical discussion of the interplay between different kinds of reception, first and foremost those of translations and introductions, as well as the practices of recycling critical comments. This in turn sheds light on the parallel and intertwined constructions and negotiations of a Swedish literary canon inside and outside the nation, as well as the complex motives behind what Hermansson labels “superficial reception” in an era marked by a desire to both know and master the literature of other nations.

  • Characters as fictional migrants : Atonement, adaptation and the screenplay process
  • 2020
  • In: Journal of Screenwriting. - : Intellect Ltd.. - 1759-7137 .- 1759-7145. ; 11:1, s. 81-97
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The migration metaphor has been widely used in connection with media adaptions, but the metaphor has remained an abstract figure of speech. Yet, to understand characters as migrants who go through journeys of acculturation when they are adapted for the screen may enhance understanding of both the characters' potential and problems that may arise during the development process. This article proposes that the development of characters and their processes - as fictional beings - can be understood through the use of models that describe real migrants' adaptation processes. Using Christopher Hampton's screenplay drafts for the film Atonement (2001), it outlines how such migratory journeys go hand in hand with screenwriters' problem-solving processes. The article thus develops the idea that migrating characters, in their capacity as fictional beings and the thematic issues that they represent, both adapt to and appropriate their new media environments; simultaneously, they are appropriated by new creative forces and by the conventions of those new media environments, who in turn must adapt to the characters in this process of bi-directional acculturation.

  • Living Side by Side in an Individualized Society: Home, Place, and Social Relations in Late Modern Swedish Language Picturebooks
  • 2019
  • In: Contemporary Nordic Literature and Spatiality / eds: Kristina Malmio & Kaisa Kurikka. - Cham : Palgrave MacMillan. - 9783030233525 ; , s. 79-100
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This open access collection offers a detailed mapping of recent Nordic literature and its different genres (fiction, poetry, and children’s literature) through the perspective of spatiality. Concentrating on contemporary Nordic literature, the book presents a distinctive view on the spatial turn and widens the understanding of Nordic literature outside of canonized authors. Examining literatures by Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish authors, the chapters investigate a recurrent theme of social criticism and analyze this criticism against the welfare state and power hierarchies in spatial terms. The chapters explore various narrative worlds and spaces—from the urban to parks and forests, from textual spaces to spatial thematics, studying these spatial features in relation to the problems of late modernity.

  • Is this the Futu.re? Russian Cosmism and the Construction of an Immor(t)al Utopia
  • 2020
  • In: Broken Mirrors: Representations of Apocalypses and Dystopias in Popular Culture / edited by Joe Trotta, Zlatan Filipovic, Houman Sadri.. - London : Routledge. - 9780367235918 ; , s. 90-104
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • By using Dmitry Glukhovsky’s 2013 novel Futu.re as framework, this chapter seeks to present and comment on the dystopian motif in recent Russian literature. Holve Ullestad argues that much of what is stirring in this literary field today has roots in a peculiar movement that grew out of the utopian ideas of Russian philosophers Nikolaj Fedorov and Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, today known as Russian Cosmism. While dormant for many years, it has now reawakened to find itself at the centre of Russian culture in a new movement, sometimes labelled as The Antiutopia Factory. Throughout this chapter, Hove Ullestad discusses the historical background of these movements in connection with the immense popularity of dystopian narratives in present-day Russia.
