  • Agent trade servers in financial exchange systems
  • 2004
  • In: ACM Transactions on Internet Technology. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 1533-5399 .- 1557-6051. ; 4:3, s. 329-339
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • New services based on the best-effort paradigm could complement the current deterministic services of an electronic financial exchange. Four crucial aspects of such systems would benefit from a hybrid stance: proper use of processing resources, bandwidth management, fault tolerance, and exception handling. We argue that a more refined view on Quality-of-Service control for exchange systems, in which the principal ambition of upholding a fair and orderly marketplace is left uncompromised, would benefit all interested parties.

  • Positioning with Bluetooth
  • 2003
  • In: 10th International Conference on Telecommunications. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 0780376617 ; , s. 954-958
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents an evaluation of Bluetooth positioning in a general positioning platform. Proceeding the evaluation a Bluetooth based positioning system was implemented in order to complement the theoretical evaluation with empirical tests. Three different ways of positioning with Bluetooth have been developed. With a registered positioning service a Bluetooth device has an active role in the positioning task as it sends a position on request. A Bluetooth device can also take a more passive role in a positioning task, where the unique address of the device is used by a connected device to look up respective position in a database. It is also possible to forward a position gained from the positioning platform using the peer to peer characteristics in Bluetooth. This paper does also contain a discussion on the theoretical time requirements for a positioning system based on Bluetooth. Empirical tests show that these requirements hold.

  • Once again: The perception of piano touch and tone : Can touch audibly change piano sound independently of intensity?
  • 2004
  • In: Proceedings of the International Symposium on Musical Acoustics, March 31st to April 3rd 2004 (ISMA2004), Nara, Japan. - Nara, Japan : The Acoustical Society of Japan, CD-ROM. - 4998060236 ; , s. 332-335
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study addresses the old question of whether the timbreof isolated piano tones can be audibly varied independentlyof their hammer velocities—only through thetype of touch. A large amount of single piano tones wereplayed with two prototypical types of touch: depressingthe keys with the finger initially resting on the key surface(pressed), and hitting the keys from a certain distanceabove (struck). Musicians were asked to identify the typeof touch of the recorded samples, in a first block with allattack noises before the tone onsets included, in a secondblock without them. Half of the listeners could correctlyidentify significantly more tones than chance in the firstblock (up to 86% accuracy), but no one in block 2. Thosewho heard no difference tended to give struck ratings forlouder tones in both blocks.

  • Contact sounds for continuous feedback
  • 2004
  • In: Proceedings of International Workshop on Interactive Sonification.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The role of continuous auditory feedback in multimodal embodied interfaces is advocated. Examples of physics based cartoon sound models (rolling and friction) are usedto display deviation from equilibrium and exerted effort inmanipulative interfaces.

  • Using discrete event simulation to analyse production capacity utilization
  • 2003
  • In: ICOM 2003. - : Professional Engineering Publishing. - 1860584209 ; , s. 117-122
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Computer simulation, because it can be applied to operational problems that are too difficult to model and solve analytically, is an especially effective tool to help analyse Supply/Demand Chain (S/DC) [1] capacity utilization issues [2]. As part of the ongoing research project daisy [3] has a case study for analysing the benefit of interfacing an Enterprise Resource planning system (ERP) with a system for computer simulation. Connecting simulation tools to systems for ERP in order to import necessary input data to simulate production plans would be a proper way to apply computer simulation tools to this type of problems. Simulating production plans could have different purposes, e.g. minimizing waste of resources or setting accurate delivery dates. Technically the connection between the two systems, i.e. the simulation system and the ERP system, could be made in an uncomplicated manner, for instance using files or network-based solutions. Different purposes will require different response time between the two systems involved and thereby different solutions for the connection. The main question in this study is not the technical connection but rather which data to import and the needed quality of these data in order to analyse capacity utilisation. For those ho have built real life simulation models lack of realistically data is a well-known fact. This is due to obsolete or inaccurate product data in ERP systems.

  • Landmark representation in 3-D nautical charts
  • 2004
  • In: Proceedings of the Eighth International Conference on Information Visualisation, IV 2004. - 1093-9547. - 0769521770 ; , s. 159-164
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper first presents an overview of a research project in the field of information design concerning a new 3-D decision support system for nautical navigation, a 3-D cart. The paper then discusses landmark representation in the virtual environment of the chart; particularly the representation of forested islands andcoasts where the tree canopy is an important feature in the silhouette. Experiment with removing certain parts of laser scanned data, shows promising results when it comes to recreating the silhouette of islands with forests or groves of trees in the virtual environment.
