  • Surface state energy shifts by molecular adsorption : CO ON Cu(111)
  • 1981
  • In: Solid State Communications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0038-1098 .- 1879-2766. ; 40:4, s. 395-397
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Molecular adsorption induced energy shifts of a surface state is observed for the Cu(111)/CO system. Angle resolved photoelectron energy spectra show that a zone center surface state shifts to higher energy relative to the Cu bulk bands. The effects is discussed in terms of charge transfer, molecular interaction range and absorption site.

  • Computer simulation of temperature fields in mechanised plasma-arc welding
  • 1989
  • In: Journal of Mechanical Working Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-3804. ; 19:1, s. 23-33
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The process of the mechanised plasma-arc butt-welding of thin-gauge mild-steel sheets has been studied, both theoretically and experimentally. The transient temperature distribution has been computed using an analytical model due to Rosenthal. The results have then been compared with those generated by finite-element analysis using the commercial package PAFEC. The two sets of results were found to be in reasonably good agreement; moreover, the theoretical values were found to correlate fairly well with the results of experiments performed on a Messer Griesheim Uniwig G-200P plasma-arc welding machine. The extent of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) in the butt-welded specimens has been computed by analysing the temperature history at points lying transverse to the weldment: the theoretical values match fairly closely with those obtained from the welding experiments. The efficiency of the plasma-arc welding process has been estimated to be around 32% to 35%.

  • Vestibulo-ocular disturbances in rats exposed to organic solvents
  • 1984
  • In: Acta Pharmacologica et Toxicologica. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0001-6683. ; 54:1, s. 58-63
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The influence of different kinds of industrial solvents on the vestibular function of rats has been studied by recording nystagmus, induced by accelerated rotation. The effect was related to the blood levels of the solvents. One group of solvents, including halogenated saturated hydrocarbons like dichloromethane, caused depression of the vestibulo-oculomotor reflex (VOR). Another group, including benzene compounds like xylene, toluene, styrene and cumene and halogenated unsaturated hydrocarbons like trichloroethylene caused an excitation of the VOR. The most striking chemical similarity between the different solvents in the last group is the occurence of double-bonds. If the animals were exposed simultaneously to solvents from both groups the excitatory effect prevailed and was even potentiated. It is suggested that solvents cause depression or excitation of the VOR by interaction with central pathways in the reticular formation and the cerebellum.
