- During the 1990s many of the local authorities have been forced to reduce expenditure on the care of the elderly and people with disabilities, and many organisational changes have been carried out. New problems and their solutions are often related to leadership and management. This dissertation deals with three trends in the development of the organisation: The first trend is a market orientation, one example of which is the attempt to increase effectiveness and efficiency by utilising a purchaser/provider model in the organisation. Here the needs assessment model is studied. The second trend is the response to the pressed situation due to heavy workloads that staff members and their managers express, exemplified by self-managing work teams and a year-based working hour system. Here called flexible work organisations. The third trend focused in this dissertation is the decentralisation of social services. It is connected to increased demands on involvement in, and participation from those who use the services, i.e. the elderly and people with disabilities. The aim of this dissertation is to shed light on how politicians and managers view, experience and describe management and leadership in three types of local authority organisations. The focus is on the demands on managers and how the working conditions for managers are described in the different organisations. The material includes three different empirical methods. The first is a questionnaire to politicians and local authority officials, mainly managers at different levels in the care of the elderly and persons with disabilities. The second method consists of qualitative interviews with politicians and managers. The third method involved a document study of local authority documents, e.g. official guidelines, plans and evaluations. The method of analysis, a ?qualified content analysis? is inspired by discourse analysis and focuses on a comparison between the different local authorities, between politicians and managers and between women and men. This dissertation shows that the organisational changes brought about unexpected consequenses for management and that the demands differ between politicians and managers and between different organisations. Politicians and higher-level management expect the managers to manage the organisation, and employees expect them to lead. The solution seems to be a high level of competence, but which competence is needed? There are two different ideals for leadership. One is associated with focus on effectiveness and efficiency and the other associated with focus on communication. The dissertation highlights the conditions of a management, which is currently being pushed further down in the organisation. The dilemma of leadership ? being a manager or a leader will not disappear. Somewhere in the organisation the perspective of effectiveness and efficiency and the perspective of communication have to meet. It might be seen as a dilemma that will not go away ? only be placed in different levels in the organisation.

- This article is based on data gathered through 60 qualitative interviews conducted within the realm of three research projects that have used "culture-appropriate lenses" to study the postmigration situation of late-in-life Iranian immigrants to Sweden. The findings gathered through these studies were interpreted against the backdrop that culturally appropriate nursing theories provide. This meant that it was, at times, these elders' backgrounds as cultural "others" that were implicitly used to make sense of the various issues that were brought to the fore by these studies. The particular issue with which this article is concerned is the "unusualness" of these elders' explanatory models of illness. Inspired by the concept definition of situation in the symbolic interactionist perspective and by the feeling that this perspective might bring about a different interpretation of the original findings regarding their understandings of illness and disease, we set out to conduct a secondary analysis of these elders explanatory models of illness. The findings presented in this article will show how the elderly Iranian immigrants interviewed in these three studies utilize the process of "late in life migration" as a point of reference for their understandings of what has caused the illnesses from which they suffered. Hereby we will suggest that the "unusualness" of their explanatory models of illness might be best understood if we focus on what they shared as immigrants (i.e., the fact that the process of late-in-life migration has made their culture obsolete) as opposed to what they shared as Iranians (i.e., their culture of origin).

- Detta utkast utgör en redovisning av ett uppdrag som jag fick av Forsknings- och utvecklingsenheten vid Statens institutionsstyrelse (SiS). Uppdraget bestod i att, under en tvåmånadersperiod (april och maj 2009), granska och urskilja etnicitetsmarkörer i det empiriska material som samlats in under intervjuer och möten med aktörerna i ett samarbetsprojekt i ungdomsvården (MVG-projektet). Tanken var att studien skulle ge några förslag på strategier i det fortsatta värdegrundsarbetet inom SiS. I detta utkast analyseras muntliga etnicitetsgestaltningar hos olika aktörer i ungdomsvården. Undersökningen uppmärksammar etniciteten när den uttrycks verbalt och icke-verbalt, hur den uttrycks samt i vilka situationer kategoriseringar synliggörs implicit eller explicit. Studiens syfte är: att analysera när och hur etnicitet aktualiseras genom kategoriseringar i ungdomsvården, att uppmärksamma hur dessa kategoriseringar markeras samt påvisa hur berättarens egna etniska identitet formas och upprätthålls genom olika markeringar. Rapporten bygger på 109 intervjuer som genomförts med olika aktörer i ungdomsvården samt de fältanteckningar jag fört i anslutning till de olika mötena, spontana samtal före och efter intervjuerna, och i anslutning till besöken på de olika institutionerna, arbetsplatserna, mm.

- The self and the elusive necessity of the subject: outline of a social- psychological critique of Judith Butler In her widely cited and criticised Gender trouble, Judith Butler (1990) elaborated the thought that gender needs to be understood as performative – a certain kind of doing behind the bars of a hegemonic heterosexual imperative that governs intelligible bodily configurations. Drawing mainly on psychoanalytical and foucauldian arguments, Butler dwells upon numerous important questions concerning power and subjectivity while arguing that subjects need to conform to the heterosexual matrix in order to gain intelligibility. However, she does not manage to emphasize the importance of situating neither the subject nor the body in a social reality. Due to the problematic and sometimes unclear differentiation between the concepts of performance and performativity as well as the somewhat obscure idea of subjectivity, self and corporeality that are put forward in Butler’s theorizing, it is here argued that her theoretical framework needs to be re-conceptualized from the viewpoint of social psychology. Combining a theoretical framework that draws upon Butler (1990; 1993; 1997a and 1997b) with a symbolic interactionist perspective (Blumer 1969; Mead 1995), this paper aims at locating intersections, gaps and similarities between these rather disparate perspectives. Initiating such a venture, the argument pursued in this paper revolves around the concept of social self and the ways this concept possibly can elaborate Butler’s theory. It is argued that a social psychological take on butlerian thinking can enhance and further elaborate an understanding of the processes involved in the doing of gender.

- Inom lärarutbildningen vid Högskolan i Halmstad har handledning och examination av lärarstudenternas examensarbete nyligen förändrats. Studenterna handleds nu i grupper av handledarpar, vilka i sin tur ingår i ett lag som coachas av en kollega. Examinationen av examensarbetena har också förändrats i och med att examinatorer som är externa i förhållande till handledningen införts. Vidare har nya bedömningskriterier utarbetats som skärpt de vetenskapliga kraven och tydliggjort kraven i fråga om examensarbetenas ämnesdidaktiska implikationer och skolverksamhetsrelevans. Slutligen har lärare, rektorer och andra aktörer i för-, grund- och gymnasieskolor engagerats som medreflektörer, vilka ger kollegiala kommentarer till lärarstudenternas examensarbeten. Föreliggande text syftar för det första till att beskriva detta nya sätt att handleda och examinera examensarbeten. För det andra syftar texten till att kritiskt reflektera över handledning och examination i ljuset av dels lärarutbildningens ovanligt spänningsfyllda karaktär, dels dess speciella studiekultur.

- Hur kan det komma sig att en relativt stor andel lärare på en och samma gång är missnöjda med en rad arbetsvillkor och upplever att arbetet är meningsfullt? Varför är, med andra ord, många lärare nöjda med sin yrkesutövning som lärare samtidigt som de är missnöjda som anställda? Frågeställningarna har attackerats från flera håll med utgångspunkt från läraryrkets och skolans utveckling under de senaste 20 åren. Många lärare förefaller finna sitt yrkes mening i relationen med eleverna och i de nära arbetsvillkoren. Missnöjets källa förefaller å andra sidan vara förvandlingen av de nära arbetsvillkoren inom ramen för skolans utveckling under de senaste 10-15 åren, som bland annat resulterat i att lärarens roll som underordnad anställd betonats och att yrkesautonomin utmanats.
