  • Expression control in singing voice synthesis : Features, approaches, evaluation, and challenges
  • 2015
  • In: IEEE signal processing magazine (Print). - : IEEE Press. - 1053-5888 .- 1558-0792. ; 32:6, s. 55-73
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In the context of singing voice synthesis, expression control manipulates a set of voice features related to a particular emotion, style, or singer. Also known as performance modeling, it has been approached from different perspectives and for different purposes, and different projects have shown a wide extent of applicability. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of approaches to expression control in singing voice synthesis. We introduce some musical applications that use singing voice synthesis techniques to justify the need for an accurate control of expression. Then, expression is defined and related to speech and instrument performance modeling. Next, we present the commonly studied set of voice parameters that can change perceptual aspects of synthesized voices. After that, we provide an up-to-date classification, comparison, and description of a selection of approaches to expression control. Then, we describe how these approaches are currently evaluated and discuss the benefits of building a common evaluation framework and adopting perceptually-motivated objective measures. Finally, we discuss the challenges that we currently foresee.

  • CMOS-integrated Si/SiGe quantum-well infrared microbolometer focal plane arrays manufactured with very large-scale heterogeneous 3-d integration
  • 2015
  • In: IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 0792-1233 .- 1077-260X .- 1558-4542. ; 21:4
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We demonstrate infrared focal plane arrays utilizing monocrystalline silicon/silicon-germanium (Si/SiGe) quantum-well microbolometers that are heterogeneously integrated on top of CMOS-based electronic read-out integrated circuit substrates. The microbolometers are designed to detect light in the long wavelength infrared (LWIR) range from 8 to 14 μm and are arranged in focal plane arrays consisting of 384 × 288 microbolometer pixels with a pixel pitch of 25 μm × 25 μm. Focal plane arrays with two different microbolometer designs have been implemented. The first is a conventional single-layer microbolometer design and the second is an umbrella design in which the microbolometer legs are placed underneath the microbolometer membrane to achieve an improved pixel fill-factor. The infrared focal plane arrays are vacuum packaged using a CMOS compatible wafer bonding and sealing process. The demonstrated heterogeneous 3-D integration and packaging processes are implemented at wafer-level and enable independent optimization of the CMOS-based integrated circuits and the microbolometer materials. All manufacturing is done using standard semiconductor and MEMS processes, thus offering a generic approach for integrating CMOS-electronics with complex miniaturized transducer elements

  • High-accuracy localization for assisted living : 5G systems will turn multipath channels from foe to friend
  • 2016
  • In: IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. - 1053-5888. ; 33:2, s. 59-70
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Asisted living (AL) technologies, enabled by technical advances such as the advent of the Internet of Things, are increasingly gaining importance in our aging society. This article discusses the potential of future high-accuracy localization systems as a key component of AL applications. Accurate location information can be tremendously useful to realize, e.g., behavioral monitoring, fall detection, and real-time assistance. Such services are expected to provide older adults and people with disabilities with more independence and thus to reduce the cost of caretaking. Total cost of ownership and ease of installation are paramount to make sensor systems for AL viable. In case of a radio-based indoor localization system, this implies that a conventional solution is unlikely to gain widespread adoption because of its requirement to install multiple fixed nodes (anchors) in each room. This article therefore places its focus on 1) discussing radiolocalization methods that reduce the required infrastructure by exploiting information from reflected multipath components (MPCs) and 2) showing that knowledge about the propagation environment enables localization with high accuracy and robustness. It is demonstrated that new millimeter-wave (mm-wave) technology, under investigation for 5G communications systems, will be able to provide centimeter (cm)-accuracy indoor localization in a robust manner, ideally suited for AL.
