  • Monitoring safety properties of composite web services at runtime using CSP
  • 2009
  • In: 13th Enterprise Distributed Object Computing Conference Workshops, 2009. EDOCW 2009. - : IEEE. - 9781424455638 ; , s. 107-113
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Nowadays, service oriented architecture has been given strong attention as an important approach to integrate heterogeneous systems, in which complex services are created by composing simplerservices offered by various systems. The correctness of composition requires techniques to verify if the composite service behaves properly. To this end, in this paper we propose a new method forruntime monitoring of composite services which uses Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) to specify properties formally. Then, the CSP specification of properties is translated to a Labeled Transition System (LTS). In order to verify the safety of a composite service, we traverse the generated LTS at runtime. Existing methods almost use temporal logic to specify safety properties. There are two advantages in using CSP: 1) similarity of CSP operators and service composition patterns makes CSPstraightforward to be used by users. 2) there are some properties which can not be specified by temporal logic, while they can be expressed using CSP.

  • Assessing Medical Students' Communication Skills by the Use of Standardized Patients : Emphasizing Standardized Patients' Quality Assurance
  • 2014
  • In: Academic Psychiatry. - : Springer. - 1042-9670 .- 1545-7230. ; 38:3, s. 354-360

    • The objective structured examination is one of the most valid, reliable, and effective tools for assessing clinical and communication skills, often by use of standard patients (SPs). SPs can also be assessors of those skills. One of the crucial areas when utilizing SP-based assessment is the quality and consistency assurance of their portrayal of the case and their ability to fill in checklists in an adequate way. The aim of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of SPs' ability to assess students' communication skill via a Calgary-Cambridge checklist. This cross-sectional and correlational study was conducted at the Tehran University of Medical Science. We first analyzed validity; the criterion validity of the SPs' filling in the checklists was assessed through determining the correlation between the SPs' completed checklists and the checklists filled in by three physician raters individually and then reproducibility: it was assessed by a test-retest approach inter-rater reliability. The mean correlation for assessing the validity of SPs' completed checklists by individual SPs was 0.81. The inter-rater reliability was calculated by kappa coefficient, and the total correlation among the three raters was 0.85. The reliability of the test-retest approach showed no significant differences between the test and re-test results. The increased number of medical students and different faculties' responsibilities such as doing educational, research, and health services duties assessing medical student communication skills is a complex issue. The results of our study showed that trained SPs can be used as a valid tool to assess medical students' communication skills, which is also more cost effective and reduces work load of medical faculties.

  • The role of VEGF and a functional link between VEGF and p27Kip1 in acute myeloid leukemia
  • 2009
  • In: Leukemia. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 0887-6924 .- 1476-5551. ; 23:2, s. 251-61
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Alterations in the expression and signalling pathways of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) have been linked to the clinical features and pathogenesis of hematologic malignancies. In this study, we showed that VEGF protein expression was statistically significantly higher in the leukemic blasts than in the normal hematopoietic counterparts. A statistically significant correlation between expression of VEGF and p27(Kip1) was observed in bone marrows from 42 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (P<0.001). We further demonstrated that forced VEGF overexpression or autocrine VEGF stimulation of VEGFR-2 triggers proliferation and migration/invasion of U-937 leukemic cells, thereby inducing a more invasive tumor phenotype. U-937 cells overexpressing VEGF were resistant to all-trans-retinoic acid-(ATRA) or camptothecin-induced apoptosis. Finally, we showed that increased p27(Kip1) expression enhanced the ability of VEGF and VEGFR-2 to promote the migration of U-937 cells. Taken together, our results suggest that elevated level of VEGF may contribute to the adverse patient outcome by promoting cell growth, survival and migration of leukemic cells and by reducing the sensitivity of leukemic cells to therapeutic agents-induced apoptosis.
