  • Sources of tolerance towards corrupted politicians in Greece: the role of trade offs and individual benefits
  • 2013
  • In: Crime Law and Social Change. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0925-4994 .- 1573-0751. ; 60:5, s. 549-563
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Reelection of corrupted politicians points to a problem of democratic accountability. Voters do have the chance to 'throw the rascals out', but they do not take it. Employing a survey experiment, we test two popular explanations of why Greek voters fail to effectively sanction corrupt politicians. One is related to the distorting effects of psychological attachment to parties and the second to tradeoffs that seem to come into play when voters weigh the prevalence of corruption against other tangible benefits that they receive from governments and parties, such as lower taxes or clientelistic exchanges. Our findings suggest that collective benefits, such as cutting taxes, outweigh the costs of tolerating political corruption. On the contrary, exclusive provision of goods to specific voters, such as in the case of clientelistic exchanges, seems to be negatively related to support for a corrupt politician and therefore should rather not be regarded as a source of tolerance to corruption, at least not in present time Greece.

  • Kontraster och nyanser. Svensk statsvetenskap i brytningstid.
  • 2010
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Student-led replication studies in comparative politics: new findings by fresh eyes?
  • 2023
  • In: Zeitschrift Fur Vergleichende Politikwissenschaft. - 1865-2646. ; 17:3, s. 261-273
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This research note presents two replication studies that were conducted during a research-oriented course at Heidelberg University in summer 2022. The first study, initially conducted by Korell, replicates the findings from Albert's original contribution on rebel governance. Albert conducted an explorative study in analyzing the associations between rebel governance and rebel military capacity. Our replication study indicates support for Albert's argument of the relevance of disaggregating rebel governance, while we also show that the original findings are mainly driven by Albert's explorative model specifications. The second study, initially conducted by Reinecke, tests the robustness of Levin et al.'s study on the democratic peacekeeping hypothesis and expands upon the original study by directly testing the "selectorate-theoretic causal mechanism" for the democratic peacekeeping hypothesis. Overall, the replication studies presented in this research note provide interesting findings regarding empirical conflict studies and contribute to ongoing efforts to promote replication initiatives in the education of future political scientists.

  • The Role of the Opposition in Autocratization : The Case of Turkey's Republican People’s Party (CHP)
  • 2024
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This dissertation explores the role of opposition parties in autocratization, focusing on Turkey's main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP). By examining the CHP during the Justice and Development Party (AKP) rule from 2002 to 2023, it reveals the complex roles and strategies of opposition actors in both resisting and contributing to autocratization. It challenges the binary view of opposition success or failure, suggesting that opposition parties like the CHP are dynamic entities within autocratic regimes. They can combat and contribute to autocratization through their discourse, policy decisions, and actions. By analyzing the CHP's evolving strategies, alliances, and discourse, the research underscores the opposition's pivotal role in shaping Turkey’s political landscape. Employing a diverse methodology, including 20 elite interviews, 10 focus group discussions with 60 participants, archival research, and participant observation, the thesis introduces two new concepts: rigid opposition and flexible opposition. Initially, the CHP maintained a rigid opposition characterized by identity-based polarization. However, over time, the party shifted to a more flexible approach, forging strategic alliances and adopting an inclusive discourse. This transformation underscores the adaptable nature of opposition strategies, illustrating that opposition actions cannot be solely evaluated on a binary success-failure scale. While the CHP's flexibility is essential in countering autocratization, it also poses the risk of contributing to it and diluting party identity.  Additionally, the dissertation examines the evolution of the CHP’s discourse. By comparing election campaigns and protests, the study shows how the CHP's shift from an exclusionary to an inclusive discourse challenged the ruling AKP's polarizing populist narrative, while the previous exclusionary approach contributed to political polarization. This inclusive discourse played a crucial role in the CHP’s success in the 2019 local elections. Furthermore, the thesis investigates the CHP's strategic alliances and opposition coordination, probing into the motivations and challenges encountered by CHP political elites. It identifies the primary challenges encountered by the CHP in maintaining cohesive opposition alliances and elucidates how these challenges impact the process of autocratization in Turkey.
