  • Putative molt-inhibiting hormone in larvae of the shore crab Carcinus-maenas L. - an immunocytochemical approach
  • 1991
  • In: The Biological Bulletin. - Chicago : University of Chicago Press. - 0006-3185 .- 1939-8697. ; 180, s. 65-71
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Immunocytochemical investigations of the eyestalk of Carcinus maenas zoeal larval stages, using an antiserum directed against putative Carcinus molt-inhibiting hormone (MIH), revealed immunopositive neuronal structures. These structures included perikarya associated with the medulla terminalis X-organ, parts of the sinus gland tract, and the neurohemal organ-the sinus gland. Apart from an increase in volume of the sinus gland between zoeal stage I and II, no striking changes in the topography or morphology of the MIH neurosecretory system were observed. Immunopositive structures were found in similar locations to those seen in adult crabs. Our results suggest that the control of molting by MIH in crustacean larvae may be similar to the currently accepted model of molt control in adult decapod crustaceans.

  • Kläppaängarna, Ljusdal : Naturinventering 1992
  • 1994
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Factors Influencing Winter Food Choice by Mountain Hares (Lepus-Timidus L) on Swedish Coastal Islands
  • 1987
  • In: Canadian Journal of Zoology. - : Canadian Science Publishing. - 0008-4301 .- 1480-3283. ; 65:9, s. 2163-2167
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In mainland areas, mountain hares seem unable to survive on a single browse species. However, mountain hares on islands off the west coast of Sweden rely almost entirely on a plain heather diet during winter. Herein, we give as a possible explanation for this phenomenon that the high concentration of sodium in the heather in the coastal areas can buffer the high sodium excretion otherwise observed in hares feeding on heather under experimental conditions. Furthermore, hares selected heather with the highest nitrogen and phosphorus contents. We argue that the pattern of food choice exhibited by the hares in the coastal area is to be expected in homogenous habitats where hares rely on one dominant food species. In heterogenous habitats, the possibility of food selection on a nutritional level is to a considerable extent overridden by effects of digestibility and concentration of secondary compounds in the different food plants available.

  • The Effect of Red Fox Predation on Mountain Hare Populations on Islands
  • 1986
  • In: Mammal Review. - 0305-1838 .- 1365-2907. ; 16:3-4, s. 198-198
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The population dynamics of Mountain Hares on islands have been monitored during 10 years. In some years Red Foxes have been present on some islands. The intensity of predation on the hares is given from the reduction of the known hare densities, and from the foxes’ diet (scat analysis). The effect of predation on the hare populations was found to be density dependent, but also dependent on the alternative food available.[Complete text from journal]

  • 1988
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Crustacean cardioactive peptide in the nervous system of the locust, Locusta migratoria: an immunocytochemical study on the ventral nerve cord and peripheral innervation
  • 1991
  • In: Cell and Tissue Research. - Heidelberg New York : Springer. - 0302-766X .- 1432-0878. ; 263, s. 439-457
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Crustacean cardioactive peptide-immunoreactive neurons occur in the entire central nervous system of Locusta migratoria. The present paper focuses on mapping studies in the ventral nerve cord and on peripheral projection sites. Two types of contralaterally projecting neurons occur in all neuromers from the subesophageal to the seventh abdominal ganglia. One type forms terminals at the surface of the thoracic nerves 6 and 1, the distal perisympathetic organs, the lateral heart nerves, and on ventral and dorsal diaphragm muscles. Two large neurons in the anterior part and several neurons of a different type in the posterior part of the terminal ganglion project into the last tergal nerves. In the abdominal neuromers 1–7, two types of ipsilaterally projecting neurons occur, one of which gives rise to neurosecretory terminals in the distal perisympathetic organs, in peripheral areas of the transverse, stigmata and lateral heart nerves. Four subesophageal neurons have putative terminals in the neurilemma of the nervus corporis allati II, and in the corpora allata and cardiaca. In addition, several immunoreactive putative interneurons and other neurons were mapped in the ventral nerve cord. A new in situ whole-mount technique was essential for elucidation of the peripheral pathways and targets of the identified neurons, which suggest a role of the peptide in the control of heartbeat, abdominal ventilatory and visceral muscle activity.
