  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to describe degree projects on a bachelor level in nursing where peer review was used as quality assurance. Two student groups, 45 nursing students and seven registered nurses, participated. This case study describes quality assurance through collaboration between examiners. The results are focused on students´, supervisors´ and examiners` experiences during the degree process from the examiners perspective. Time disposal and criteria for a passing grade constituted factors associated with obstacles for students as well for supervisors and examiners. Peer review between two universities created opportunities for increasing awareness and validation of the quality of degree project and increased reliability for the examiner’s assessment. The study highlighted the need for collaboration between supervisors and examiners throughout the work process with student’s degree project. A model of group supervision e.g. with eight students, two supervisors and one examiner with regularly utilisation of peer-review for quality assurance is a further development to reach quality assurance in a degree project.

  • Hälsorelaterad information via Internet : Hinder och möjligheter för individen
  • 2006
  • In: Vård i Norden. - 0107-4083 .- 1890-4238. ; 26:4, s. 37-40
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Increasingly people use the Internet to find health-related information. However, to obtain information of good quality there may be obstacles. The aim of this literature review was to gain knowledge about use of the Internet in developing health related knowledge. Two questions were posted: What factors can be obstacles in understanding health-related information on the Internet? What effects can health related information obtained from the Internet have for the user? In a systematic search in CINAHL and Pubmed, and a systematic review of two specific journals from the years 2000 to 2004, 14 scientific articles were found. Use of the Internet is related to the individual’s age, socio-economical factors, ethnicity, and health. Information obtained from the Internet may influence the patient-caregiver relation, as well as the individual’s sense of security and independence. There are learning needs for the individual in how to use the Internet and needs for improvement of the search-engines and websites

  • Att vaka en begreppsanalytisk studie : To watch a study of the concept
  • 2006
  • In: Vård I Norden. - 0107-4083. ; 26:1, s. 4-8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • To watch over a sick or dying person is a common phrase and phenomenon used both by relatives and hospital staff. The aim of this study was to analyse the concept of watch and it's meaning for caring in the context of intensive care. The study was conducted in two steps. First an etymological and semantic analysis was conducted, in the second step, 35 persons, including 19 registered nurses undergoing a specialist training program in critical care and 16 persons representing the public were asked to write down their personal opinions about the meaning of the concept. A synthesis of the semantic analysis and the empirical study was made and finally a tentative meaning of the concept was formulated. To watch (over someone) is to be present by a person's side with attention, in the purpose of protecting the loved one from danger and to assist and help in presence of illness and/or dying. The person who watches can do it day or night and be a next of kin or a nurse. To watch means to be emotionally involved and your own needs are put aside in favour of the concern and care for the ill or dying person. This abstract was translated into English by the publisher or author.

    • The EPUAP (European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel) has developed a European-wide prevalence survey methodology, which has been used in several European countries. The EPUAP-protocol has been translated to Swedish and two prevalence studies have been conducted at Uppsala University and one at MalmöUniversity Hospital. The aim of this paper is to present the modified EPUAP-protocoll as well as our experience in using the methodology. Pressure ulcershave been described as a national quality indicator and the protocol could facilitate the follow up of an important nursing area.

  • Stress and self-rated health : comparison between 26-year old Swedish women at intervals of twenty years
  • 2006
  • In: Vård i Norden. - Oslo, Norway : SSN, Sykepleiernes Samarbeid i Norden. - 0107-4083 .- 1890-4238. ; 26:3, s. 30-33
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In society of today there are great demands on young women concerning education, work and social life and also concerning health and beauty expectations. The aim of this study was to compare 26-year old Swedish women studied at intervals of twenty years concerning stress in daily life and self-rated health. The participants in 2002 (n=386) answered the same questionnaire that was used twenty years ago in a prospective population study (n=85). The result showed no difference in self-rated health between the two groups. However, women in 2002 reported more stress and health complaints such as exhaustion, sleep disorders, restlessness and difficulty concentration. They also reported low energy level and bad appetite. This discomfort must be interpreted with caution and not necessarily as ill health. However, it is important to take the experience of stress in daily life and the increase in health complaints into consideration even if women today rate their health as good in order to avoid lasting imbalance and thereby future diseases.

  • Mental health-promoting dialogue of school nurses from the perspective of adolescent pupils
  • 2006
  • In: Vård i Norden. - 0107-4083 .- 1890-4238. ; 26:4, s. 10-13, 19
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Mental health is a major public health issue in Sweden, especially concerning children and adolescents. School plays a primary role as a health-promoting arena, where school nurses use the health dialogue to promote mental health. The aim of this study was to describe the prerequisites of a mental health-promoting dialogue with the school nurse from the perspective of young people. A further aim was to explore what adolescents believe are important dimensions for achieving such a desired dialogue. Twenty-six 15-year-olds in Sweden were interviewed after being assigned to five focus groups. Inductive qualitative content analysis was used. The findings show that the prerequisites for a mental health-promoting dialogue with the school nurse include what issues to discuss in the dialogue and where the dialogue should take place. The dimensions of the dialogue include what the adolescents think is most important in the dialogue with the school nurse: trustiness, attentiveness, respectfulness, authencity, accessibility during school hours and continuity.

  • Psychosocial risk factors in families with infants: a municipality survey
  • 2006
  • In: Vård i Norden. - 0107-4083. ; 26:3, s. 9-9
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Difficulties in a family's psychosocial situation during the period of infancy are associated with mental problems and behavioural disorders in children. The aim of the study was to identify the extent and type of psychosocial factors in families with infants, including social aspects, mental problems and substance abuse as well as circumstances surrounding the birth. All infants born between March 1st 2000 and August 31st 2001 whose parents had adequate knowledge of the Swedish language (N=576) were included. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire. Psychosocial risk factors were found in the families of 24% of infants whose mothers were of Swedish origin and in the families of 58% of infants whose mothers were of foreign origin. The most common risk factors were: unemployment, premature birth, and one or both parents exhibiting signs of great worry and anxiety in relation to their child and parenthood. The study also shows that mental problems and substance abuse were only present in a very small number of parents. Furthermore, the study indicates the need to review the strategies used within child health care to identify families at risk of developing mental problems and behavioural disorders as a result of dysfunctionality in their psychosocial situation during their child's infancy. It is important to study the professional network surrounding families in more detail, both in order to detect psychosocial risk factors and to develop and evaluate interventions.
