  • Measuring and using the RSSI of IEEE 802.11p
  • 2010
  • In: 17th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems, ITS 2010, Busan, South Korea, 25-29 October 2010.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The scalability of intelligent transport systems (ITS) applications is difficult to test in a field operational test (FOT) due to the high number of ITS equipped vehicles required. Therefore, computer simulations for evaluating different wireless communication technologies for ITS different applications can serve as a complement. In this paper we present results from lab measurements conducted on the CVIS hardware platform equipped with the upcoming standard IEEE 802.11p. We have measured the packet error rate versus the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for different packet lengths. This lab measurement is the first step towards an outdoor measurement campaign which also considers interference. The outdoor measurements will then be fed into a computer simulator together with a realistic channel model for evaluating the scalability of VANETs in a highway scenario.

  • Fisher information analysis and preconditioning in electrical impedance tomography

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • An adjoint field approach is used to formulate a general numerical framework for Fisher information based sensitivity analysis in electrical impedance tomography. General expressions are given for the gradients used in standard least squares optimization, i.e., the Jacobian related to the forward problem, and it is shown that these gradient expressions are consistent with commonly used electrode models such as the shunt model and the complete electrode model. By using the adjoint field formulations together with a variational analysis, it is also shown how the computation of the Fisher information can be integrated with the gradient calculations used for optimization. It is furthermore described how the Fisher information analysis and the related sensitivity map can be used in a preconditioning strategy to obtain a well balanced parameter sensitivity and improved performance for gradient based quasi-Newton optimization algorithms in electrical impedance tomography. Numerical simulations as well as reconstructions based on experimental data are used to illustrate the sensitivity analysis and the performance of the improved inversion algorithm in a four-electrode measurement set-up.

  • Evaluating the machinability of Inconel 718 using polar diagrams
  • 2010
  • In: Proceedings of the ASME Turbo Expo 2010: Power for Land, Sea, and Air, GT 2010, Glasgow, United Kingdom, 14-18 June 2010. - 9780791843963 ; 1, s. 987-996
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The use of a polar diagram method for describing and evaluating the machinability of Inconel 718 was explored. Five key parameters of the work material, representing the mechanical and physical properties which have strongest influence on its machinability, were employed in the diagrams. These five parameters were integrated into a single polar diagram, used to describe the machinability of Inconel 718. Variations in the machinability of Inconel 718 products or components of a given type produced in different batches were analyzed. Industrial experiments were conducted to test the relationship between the polar diagram of the work material, its carbon content, and tool wear of the ceramic cutting tools used in machining it. Work materials of Inconel 718 in which the polar diagrams of machinability were similar in size and shape exhibited very similar behavior during the cutting process. The polar diagram method employed appeared to be useful for selecting suitable cutting data for the machining of new materials.

  • Higher order MIMO outdoor-to-indoor measurements using repeaters
  • 2010
  • In: IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference. - 1550-2252. - 9781424425198
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In this paper we present results from a outdoor- to-indoor MIMO measurement campaign where we study the effect of repeaters on singular values, spatial richness, capacity, and delay spread distributions. We present results from different repeater scenarios such as, e.g. different outdoor/indoor repeater deployments with single/dual polarized antennas. The measurements show that repeaters significantly enhance the received SNR while they increase the delay spread and decrease the spatial richness of the MIMO channel. However, the main conclusion is that a significant increase in channel capacity is attained when deploying repeaters mostly thanks to their ability to provide spatial multiplexing over the high-quality eigenmodes they may provide. The number of such eigenmodes is limited by the number of repeaters, deployment, and their antennas. © 2010 IEEE.
