    • Due to the considerable high bio-compatibility, calcium phosphate nanoparticles are widely used in biomedical applications. This study proposes a novel strategy for low-cost manufacturing calcium phosphate nanoporous spheres. The controlled reaction only took less than five minutes, when using Baltic seawater with the dissolved calcium concentration of 2.2 mM as the calcium resources. Porous nanospheres were obtained, with spheres ranging from 50 to 130 nm. The obtained nanospheres possess high drug-loading capacity and exhibit sustained release and pH-dependent properties. In addition, this method provides a general efficient strategy to synthesize other low-cost inorganic nanospheres from seawater.

    • The mitochondrial proteome is built mainly by import of nuclear-encoded precursors, which are targeted mostly by cleavable presequences. Presequence processing upon import is essential for proteostasis and survival, but the consequences of dysfunctional protein maturation are unknown. We find that impaired presequence processing causes accumulation of precursors inside mitochondria that form aggregates, which escape degradation and unexpectedly do not cause cell death. Instead, cells survive via activation of a mitochondrial unfolded protein response (mtUPR)-like pathway that is triggered very early after precursor accumulation. In contrast to classical stress pathways, this immediate response maintains mitochondrial protein import, membrane potential, and translation through translocation of the nuclear HMG-box transcription factor Roxl to mitochondria. Roxl binds mtDNA and performs a TFAM-like function pivotal for transcription and translation. Induction of early mtUPR provides a reversible stress model to mechanistically dissect the initial steps in mtUPR pathways with the stressTFAM Roxl as the first line of defense.

    • We investigate the influence of entrepreneurs' temporal preferences on the alertness–effectuation association in the early opportunity creation process. Although temporal cognitions of planning and flexible pacing are generally beneficial in organizational settings, we ask whether they constrain effectuation efforts when there is increasing alertness. Using survey data from 92 entrepreneurs running Swedish ventures, we find that entrepreneurial alertness has a positive association with effectual decision making during opportunity creation. We find support for our predictions that temporal planning (the consideration of the temporal flow of task activities) and flexible pacing behavior (the adaptation of one's pace within social interactions) weaken the positive association between alertness and effectuation. We discuss the implications of our research for the literature on entrepreneurial alertness and effectuation and for the emerging literature on entrepreneurs' temporal preferences.

    • In the story Alice in Wonderland, Alice fell down a rabbit hole and suddenly found herself in a strange world called Wonderland. Alice gradually developed knowledge about Wonderland by observing, learning, and reasoning. In this paper we present the system Alice In Wonderland that operates analogously. As a theoretical basis of the system, we define several basic concepts of logic in a generalized setting, including the notions of domain, proof, consistency, soundness, completeness, decidability, and compositionality. We also prove some basic theorems about those generalized notions. Then we model Wonderland as an arbitrary symbolic domain and Alice as a cognitive architecture that learns autonomously by observing random streams of facts from Wonderland. Alice is able to reason by means of computations that use bounded cognitive resources. Moreover, Alice develops her belief set by continuously forming, testing, and revising hypotheses. The system can learn a wide class of symbolic domains and challenge average human problem solvers in such domains as propositional logic and elementary arithmetic.
