  • News satire engagement as a transgressive space for genre work
  • 2021
  • In: International Journal of Cultural Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 1460-356X .- 1367-8779. ; 24:1, s. 15-33
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • News satire plays with the political in ways that transgress journalistic as well as social and moral boundaries. But the ways in which audiences in different contexts engage with news satire are under-researched, despite the implications of the genre’s role for contemporary citizenship. This article asks how Swedish young adult audiences construct and negotiate news satire’s inherent transgressions, spanning across the ‘serious’ and ‘silly’. Based on interview and focus group data, the analysis shows how sustained news satire engagement entails genre work that aids the development of ‘transgression skills’. This process is stimulating, constructed as part of a complex and emotionally authentic mode of political communication, within a context where journalistic certainty has dominated. By achieving transgression skills, audiences are symbolically put on the same level as political elites and develop abilities to shift perspectives; thereby experiencing a deeper engagement with, and understanding of, political issues and performance.

  • A novel fault detection and diagnosis approach based on orthogonal autoencoders
  • 2022
  • In: Computers and Chemical Engineering. - : Elsevier. - 0098-1354 .- 1873-4375. ; 163
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In recent years, there have been studies focusing on the use of different types of autoencoders (AEs) for monitoring complex nonlinear data coming from industrial and chemical processes. However, in many cases the focus was placed on detection. As a result, practitioners are encountering problems in trying to interpret such complex models and obtaining candidate variables for root cause analysis once an alarm is raised. This paper proposes a novel statistical process control (SPC) framework based on orthogonal autoencoders (OAEs). OAEs regularize the loss function to ensure no correlation among the features of the latent variables. This is extremely beneficial in SPC tasks, as it allows for the invertibility of the covariance matrix when computing the Hotelling T2 statistic, significantly improving detection and diagnosis performance when the process variables are highly correlated. To support the fault diagnosis and identification analysis, we propose an adaptation of the integrated gradients (IG) method. Numerical simulations and the benchmark Tennessee Eastman Process are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach by comparing it to traditional approaches as principal component analysis (PCA) and kernel PCA (KPCA). In the analysis, we explore how the information useful for fault detection and diagnosis is stored in the intermediate layers of the encoder network. We also investigate how the correlation structure of the data affects the detection and diagnosis of faulty variables. The results show how the combination of OAEs and IG represents a compelling and ready-to-use solution, offering improved detection and diagnosis performances over the traditional methods.

  • Active learning for data streams: a survey
  • 2024
  • In: Machine Learning. - : Springer Nature. - 0885-6125 .- 1573-0565. ; 113:1, s. 185-239
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Online active learning is a paradigm in machine learning that aims to select the most informative data points to label from a data stream. The problem of minimizing the cost associated with collecting labeled observations has gained a lot of attention in recent years, particularly in real-world applications where data is only available in an unlabeled form. Annotating each observation can be time-consuming and costly, making it difficult to obtain large amounts of labeled data. To overcome this issue, many active learning strategies have been proposed in the last decades, aiming to select the most informative observations for labeling in order to improve the performance of machine learning models. These approaches can be broadly divided into two categories: static pool-based and stream-based active learning. Pool-based active learning involves selecting a subset of observations from a closed pool of unlabeled data, and it has been the focus of many surveys and literature reviews. However, the growing availability of data streams has led to an increase in the number of approaches that focus on online active learning, which involves continuously selecting and labeling observations as they arrive in a stream. This work aims to provide an overview of the most recently proposed approaches for selecting the most informative observations from data streams in real time. We review the various techniques that have been proposed and discuss their strengths and limitations, as well as the challenges and opportunities that exist in this area of research.

  • Thoracic Morphology and Bronchial Narrowing Are Related to Pulmonary Function in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis
  • 2021
  • In: Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. American volume. - : LIPPINCOTT WILLIAMS & WILKINS. - 0021-9355 .- 1535-1386. ; 103:21, s. 2014-2023
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: In adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), lung function impairment is not necessarily related to the coronal spinal deformity. Recently, right-sided bronchial narrowing has been reported in thoracic AIS. The aim of this study was to describe the relation of chest and spinal deformity parameters, bronchial narrowing, and lung volumes with pulmonary function in preoperative AIS. Methods: Spinal radiographs, low-dose computed tomographic (CT) scans of the spine including the chest, and pulmonary function tests were retrospectively collected for 85 preoperative patients with thoracic AIS in 2 centers and were compared with 14 matched controls. Three-dimensional lung and airway reconstructions were acquired. Correlation analysis was performed in which radiographic spinal parameters, CT-based thoracic deformity parameters (rib-hump index [RHi], spinal penetration index, endothoracic hump ratio, hemithoracic-width ratio), lung volume asymmetry, and bronchial cross-sectional area were compared with percent-of-predicted spirometry results. Results: Forty-one patients (48%) had a percent-of-predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1%) or percent-of-predicted forced vital capacity (FVC%) of <65%, and 17 patients (20%) had obstructive lung disease. All thoracic deformity parameters correlated significantly with FEV1% and FVC%; RHi was found to be the best correlate (r(s) = -0.52 for FEV1% and -0.54 for FVC%). Patients with AIS with impaired pulmonary function had hypokyphosis, a larger rib hump, increased spinal and thoracic rotation, a narrower right hemithorax, and increased intrusion of the spine into the chest. Spinal intrusion correlated with right-sided bronchial narrowing, relative right lung volume loss, and decreased FEV1% and FVC%. Multivariate regression including spinal and thoracic deformity parameters, lung volume asymmetry, and airway parameters could explain 57% of the variance in FEV1% and 54% of the variance in FVC%. Conclusions: Chest intrusion by the endothoracic hump is related to right-sided bronchial narrowing and lung function loss in preoperative AIS. The findings support the theory that ventilatory dysfunction in thoracic AIS is not only restrictive but frequently has an obstructive component, especially in patients with hypokyphosis. RHi is the most predictive chest parameter for lung function loss.

  • Mechanical Properties of Arteries : Identification and Application
  • 2019
  • Licentiate thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In this Licentiate of Engineering thesis, a method is proposed that identifies the mechanical properties of arteries in vivo. The mechanical properties of an artery are linked to the development of cardiovascular diseases. The possibility to identify the mechanical properties of an artery inside the human body could, thus, facilitate disease diagnostization, treatment and monitoring.Supplied with information obtainable in the clinic, typically limited to time- resolved pressure-radius measurement pairs, the proposed in vivo parameter identi- fication method calculates six representative parameters by solving a minimization problem. The artery is treated as a homogeneous, incompressible, residual stress- free, thin-walled tube consisting of an elastin dominated matrix with embedded collagen fibers referred to as the constitutive membrane model. To validate the in vivo parameter identification method, in silico arteries in the form of finite element models are created using published data for the human abdominal aorta. With these in silico arteries which serve as mock experiments with pre-defined material parameters and boundary conditions, in vivo-like pressure-radius data sets are generated. The mechanical properties of the in silico arteries are then determined using the proposed parameter identification method. By comparing the identified and the pre-defined parameters, the identification method is quantitatively validated. The parameters for the radius of the stress-free state and the material constant associated with elastin show high agreement in case of healthy arteries. Larger differences are obtained for the material constants associated with collagen, and the largest discrepancy occurs for the in situ axial prestretch. For arteries with a pathologically small elastin content, incorrect parameters are identified but the presence of a diseased artery is revealed by the parameter identification method.Furthermore, the identified parameters are used in the constitutive membrane model to predict the stress state of the artery in question. The stress state is thereby decomposed into an isotropic and an anisotropic component which are primarily associated with the elastin dominated matrix and the collagen fibers, respectively. In order to assess the accuracy of the predicted stress, it is compared to the known stress state of the in silico arteries.  The comparison of the predicted and the in silico decomposed stress states show a close agreement for arteries exhibiting a low transmural stress gradient. With increasing transmural stress gradient the agreement deteriorates. The proposed in vivo parameter identification method is capable of identifying adequate parameters and predicting the decomposed stress state reasonably well for healthy human abdominal aortas from in vivo-like data.

  • Midnight Reflections about our own Northern Ventriloquist's Skills : AN AUDIO ARTICLE BY MAURICIO CARRASCO AND FERNANDO GARNERO, IN DIALOGUE WITH YOUTUBE LINKS BY THIRUSHA NAIDU, ACHILLE MBEMBE, AND ROSI BRAIDOTTI
  • 2023
  • In: Performance Philosophy. - 2057-7176. ; 8:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • “Midnight Reflections about our own Northern Ventriloquist's Skills” is articulated in the form of a podcast in a conversational style scripted by longtime collaborators composer and performer. It starts by cartographing the authors’ previous collaborative works until they approach their last project ensemble, Campo Amniótico [CA] (2021), work in which the feedback or Larsen plays a paramount role, making the artwork highly unstable and elusive. As a result, performers and composer are in constant trouble, stripped of their cognitive performativity by the once enhancer technology, that in CA becomes almost a threat. That’s when the podcast starts to interact with recorded extracts of philosophers Rosi Braidotti and Achille Mbembe, and psychologist Thirusha Naidu on issues concerning posthumanism, postcolonialism and technological escalation. By applying and discussing their theories in the field of artistic research and, more specifically, in that of contemporary music, the authors will situate CA as a post-human artwork that aims to tip the balance more towards subversion than the status quo. That is following Eve Sedwick's precept, when she said twenty years ago with some disillusionment that the result of a work is usually always the same: a little subversive, a little hegemonic.

  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • A tallow candle gives different illumination and has other qualities than a modern halogen lamp. But in what ways have women and men changed their conceptual worlds, lifestyles and habits as a result of switching from tallow candles to kerosene lamps and then to electric light? In The Genie of the Lamp I trace and describe the link between lighting as a context and cultural processes, in particular the way people in different times, in different kinds of society, and in different social groups have related to and organized time and space. Before electric light, caution and thrift was the rule whenever lighting was used. As a consequence usually only one light was used, lighted lamps or candles were not left unattended, and empty rooms were thus dark rooms. After twilight the space that people clearly saw would shrink to become the little circle illuminated by a flame. This meant that people moved in a daytime world and a night-time world, where light and darkness set boundaries for the things they could do. I call this the mutability of space. For an ethnologist, the only truly significant long-term change in the history of lighting came with electricity. This I show in my discussion of the Goddess of Light, old similes and metaphors associated with light and dark, lighting as a class issue, perceptions of time, new rhythms in our ways of living, and light as a physiological phenomenon. The Genie of the Lamp primarily concerns Sweden, from the eighteenth century until the middle of the twentieth century. It is a study of the history of technology where illumination is discussed primarily as a dynamic force which initiates cultural and social processes.
