  • Integrated and differential fiducial cross-section measurements for the vector boson fusion production of the Higgs boson in the H → WW* → eνμν decay channel at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2023
  • In: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 108:7
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The vector-boson production cross section for the Higgs boson decay in the H→WW*→eνμν channel is measured as a function of kinematic observables sensitive to the Higgs boson production and decay properties as well as integrated in a fiducial phase space. The analysis is performed using the proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector in Run 2 of the LHC at √s=13  TeV center-of-mass energy, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb−1. The different flavor final state is studied by selecting an electron and a muon originating from a pair of W bosons and compatible with the Higgs boson decay. The data are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution, and the measurements are compared with different state-of-the-art theoretical predictions. The differential cross sections are used to constrain anomalous interactions described by dimension-six operators in an effective field theory.

  • Luminosity determination in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC
  • 2023
  • In: European Physical Journal C. - : Institute for Ionics. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 83:10
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The luminosity determination for the ATLAS detector at the LHC during Run 2 is presented, with pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy s=13 TeV. The absolute luminosity scale is determined using van der Meer beam separation scans during dedicated running periods in each year, and extrapolated to the physics data-taking regime using complementary measurements from several luminosity-sensitive detectors. The total uncertainties in the integrated luminosity for each individual year of data-taking range from 0.9% to 1.1%, and are partially correlated between years. After standard data-quality selections, the full Run 2 pp data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140.1 ± 1.2 fb - 1 , i.e. an uncertainty of 0.83%. A dedicated sample of low-pileup data recorded in 2017–2018 for precision Standard Model physics measurements is analysed separately, and has an integrated luminosity of 338.1 ± 3.1 pb - 1 . © 2023, The Author(s).

  • Measurement of the Sensitivity of Two-Particle Correlations in pp Collisions to the Presence of Hard Scatterings
  • 2023
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 131:16
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the “ridge”—i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities—and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at √s=13  TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8  pb−1, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v2, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

  • Observation of Single-Top-Quark Production in Association with a Photon Using the ATLAS Detector
  • 2023
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 131:18
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139  fb−1 of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) , to be compared with the standard model prediction of at next-to-leading order in QCD.

  • Accurate determination of the enhancement factor X for the nuclear Schiff moment in (TlF)-Tl-205 molecule based on the four-component relativistic coupled-cluster theory
  • 2020
  • In: Molecular Physics. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0026-8976 .- 1362-3028. ; 118:23
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Studies of parity (P) and time-reversal (T) symmetry violations using molecules are important and attractive because they are complementary to the high-energy tests of physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles. The focus of our present work is to surpass the current accuracies of the quantity X, an enhancement factor for the nuclear Schiff moment (Q), and the nucleon electric dipole moments for the (TlF)-Tl-205 molecule. We obtain X = 6856 a.u. using a relativistic coupled-cluster singles and doubles and perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) approach. This new value of X improves the upper limits for Q and the proton EDM by about ten percent over the previous ones. [GRAPHICS] .

  • Systemic Inflammation in Preclinical Ulcerative Colitis
  • 2021
  • In: Gastroenterology. - : AGA Institute. - 0016-5085 .- 1528-0012. ; 161:5, s. 1526-1539.e9
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background & Aims: Preclinical ulcerative colitis is poorly defined. We aimed to characterize the preclinical systemic inflammation in ulcerative colitis, using a comprehensive set of proteins. Methods: We obtained plasma samples biobanked from individuals who developed ulcerative colitis later in life (n = 72) and matched healthy controls (n = 140) within a population-based screening cohort. We measured 92 proteins related to inflammation using a proximity extension assay. The biologic relevance of these findings was validated in an inception cohort of patients with ulcerative colitis (n = 101) and healthy controls (n = 50). To examine the influence of genetic and environmental factors on these markers, a cohort of healthy twin siblings of patients with ulcerative colitis (n = 41) and matched healthy controls (n = 37) were explored. Results: Six proteins (MMP10, CXCL9, CCL11, SLAMF1, CXCL11 and MCP-1) were up-regulated (P < .05) in preclinical ulcerative colitis compared with controls based on both univariate and multivariable models. Ingenuity Pathway Analyses identified several potential key regulators, including interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor, interferon-gamma, oncostatin M, nuclear factor-κB, interleukin-6, and interleukin-4. For validation, we built a multivariable model to predict disease in the inception cohort. The model discriminated treatment-naïve patients with ulcerative colitis from controls with leave-one-out cross-validation (area under the curve = 0.92). Consistently, MMP10, CXCL9, CXCL11, and MCP-1, but not CCL11 and SLAMF1, were significantly up-regulated among the healthy twin siblings, even though their relative abundances seemed higher in incident ulcerative colitis. Conclusions: A set of inflammatory proteins are up-regulated several years before a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. These proteins were highly predictive of an ulcerative colitis diagnosis, and some seemed to be up-regulated already at exposure to genetic and environmental risk factors.

  • EU State Aid Policy: Concealed Transfer of Competences?
  • 2023
  • In: The EU between Federal Union and Flexible Integration. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783031223969 - 9783031223976 ; , s. 133-158
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This chapter concerns the role of competition policy, and in particular EU State aid rules, in the European integration process. The Treaty of the Functioning of the European Union contains a ban on State aid. However, this ban is not without exceptions. Through a centralized system, there is scope for exceptions in many policy areas. This also applies to areas where the member states are reluctant to transfer powers to the EU. To illustrate this situation, three such areas will be described: tax policy, industrial policy and housing policy. It will be demonstrated that that the development of an increasing number of detailed exceptions to the State aid ban raises important questions of competence. While the member states have been careful to delimit the EU’s powers, this has not prevented the EU from indirectly steering these policies through the application of the State aid rules.

  • An Introduction to Relativistic Theory as Implemented in GRASP
  • 2023
  • In: Atoms. - : MDPI. - 2218-2004. ; 11:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Computational atomic physics continues to play a crucial role in both increasing the understanding of fundamental physics (e.g., quantum electrodynamics and correlation) and producing atomic data for interpreting observations from large-scale research facilities ranging from fusion reactors to high-power laser systems, space-based telescopes and isotope separators. A number of different computational methods, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, is available to meet these tasks. Here, we review the relativistic multiconfiguration method as it applies to the General Relativistic Atomic Structure Package [grasp2018, C. Froese Fischer, G. Gaigalas, P. Jonsson, J. Bieron, Comput. Phys. Commun. (2018). DOI: 10.1016/j.cpc.2018.10.032]. To illustrate the capacity of the package, examples of calculations of relevance for nuclear physics and astrophysics are presented.

    • grasp is a software package in Fortran 95, adapted to run in parallel under MPI, for research in atomic physics. The basic premise is that, given a wave function, any observed atomic property can be computed. Thus, the first step is always to determine a wave function. Different properties challenge the accuracy of the wave function in different ways. This software is distributed under the MIT Licence.

  • Re-Evaluation of the Nuclear Magnetic Octupole Moment of Bi-209
  • 2022
  • In: Atoms. - : MDPI. - 2218-2004. ; 10:4
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We modified the Hfs92 code of the GRASP package in order to describe the magnetic octupole hyperfine interaction. To illustrate the utility of the modified code, we carried out state-of-the-art calculations of the electronic factors of the magnetic octupole hyperfine interaction constants for levels in the ground configuration of the Bi atom. The nuclear magnetic octupole moment of the Bi-209 isotope was extracted by combining old measurements of the hyperfine structures of 6p(34)S(3/2)(o) [Hull, R.; Brink, G. Phys. Rev. A 1970, 1, 685] and 2P(3/2)(o) [Landman, D.A.; Lurio, A. Phys. Rev. A 1970, 1, 1330] using the atomic-beam magnetic-resonance technique with our theoretical electronic factors. The present extracted octupole moment was consistent with all the available values but the one obtained in the single-particle nuclear shell model approximation. This observation supports the previous finding that nuclear many-body effects, such as the core polarization, significantly contribute to the nuclear magnetic octupole moment in the case of Bi-209.
