  • Landau cavities at MAX II
  • 1998
  • In: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - 0167-5087. ; 416:2-3, s. 465-474
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Passive Landau cavities have been built, installed and taken into regular operation in the MAX II ring. The purpose of the Landau damping system is twofold: to decrease the energy spread of the beam induced by coupled bunch oscillations and to increase the Touschek life-time. The cavities are of the pillbox type operated at 1500 MHz, the third harmonic of the main RF. This paper describes the design, tuning and operational results of the cavities.

  • Closed Loop Ignition Control by Ionization Current Interpretation
  • 1998
  • In: SAE technical paper series. - 400 Commonwealth Drive, Warrendale, PA, United States : SAE International. - 0148-7191. ; 106:SAE Technical Paper 970854, s. 1216-1223
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The main result of this paper is a real-time closed loop demonstration of spark advance control by interpretation of ionization current signals. The advantages of such a system is quantified. The ionization current, obtained by using the spark plug as a sensor, is rich on information, but the signal is also complex. A key step in our method is to use parameterized functions to describe the ionization current. The results are validated on a SAAB 2.3 l, normally aspirated, production engine, showing that the placement of the pressure trace relative to TDC is controlled using only the ionization current for feedback.

  • Increased cancer incidence in physicians, dentists, and health care workers
  • 1998
  • In: Oncology Reports. - 1021-335X. ; 5:6, s. 1413-1418
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Some earlier reports have indicated increased incidence or mortality of specific tumor types in various health care professions. In this study we have evaluated cancer incidence in physicians, dentists, and other health care workers using the Swedish Cancer Environment Register (CER), which was formed by record-linkage between the 1970 census on current occupation and Cancer Register incidence data in 1971-84. In all three profession categories studied an increased risk was found, as well for all malignant tumors combined, as for specific tumor types regarding the different occupations. Possible etiological factors responsible for these risks are discussed.

  • Agent orange in war medicine : An aftermath myth
  • 1998
  • In: International Journal of Health Services. - 0020-7314. ; 28:4, s. 715-724
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Since the late 1970s several epidemiological studies have appeared linking exposure to phenoxy herbicides or chlorophenols to some malignant tumors. Most of these compounds are contaminated with dioxins and dibenzofurans; for example, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a contaminant of 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T), a component of Agent Orange which was sprayed in Vietnam during the war. The results of some of the epidemiological studies on cancer risks associated with exposure to these compounds have been manipulated and misinterpreted, particularly by the Australian Royal Commission on the Use and Effects of Chemical Agents on Australian Personnel in Vietnam. Furthermore, a book on Australian war history entitled Medicine at War, commissioned by the Federal Government, reiterates several of these misinterpretations, despite available contrary evaluations from Australian and U.S. authorities. These remarkable and confusing circumstances in the scientific process are considered also in the light of the recent classification of TCDD as carcinogenic to humans, Group 1, by a Working Group at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France.

  • Reusing Swedish Language Processing Resources in SVENSK
  • 1998. - 1
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The SVENSK project is developing an integrated toolbox of language processing components and resources for Swedish. SVENSK employs GATE, General Architecture for Text Engineering from the University of Sheffield as a platform in which the components are to be integrated. The goal is that the resources included in SVENSK should be freely available for noncommercial use. A wide range of different modules have been incorporated so far, both in-house modules, commercially available modules, and modules from academia. The results of the integration of the modules in the GATE environment are very encouraging: it is possible to mix modules from different sources, written in programming languages from completely different paradigms and have them interact with each other, thus maintaining a high degree of reuse of algorithmical resources. However, the use of Tcl/Tk and the associated API for processing structurally relatively complex data, is time consuming and considerably slows the processing in GATE.

  • Design of an electromagnetic elliptical wiggler for ELETTRA
  • 1998
  • In: ; , s. 3527-3529
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The initial concept of the electromagnetic elliptical wiggler (EEW) for ELETTRA is a combination of a vertical permanent magnet to generate a wiggler field and a horizontal electromagnet to provide the possibility of switching the helicity of the X-ray radiation. The main aspects of the design of the EEW under construction for ELETTRA are discussed.
