  • Size-based isolation and detection of renal carcinoma cells from whole blood

    • Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a tumour type with an indolent growth pattern and rather vague symptoms. The present study developed a platform for liquid biopsy of RCC based upon the isolation of circulating tumour cells (CTCs). Founded on the observation that RCC tumour cells are considerably larger than leucocytes, the present study employed a microfluidics-based system for isolation of RCC CTCs from whole blood. Using this system, it was revealed that 66% of spiked-in RCC tumour cells could be retrieved using this approach. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that these cells could be molecularly detected with digital PCR using RCC-specific genes down to one tumour cell, whilst avoiding detection in samples lacking tumour cells. Finally, subtype specific transcripts were identified to distinguish the different subtypes of RCC, which were then validated in patient tumours. The present study established a novel workflow for the isolation of RCC CTCs from whole blood, with the potential to detect these cells irrespective of subtype.

    • We present a router architecture with electronic queuing and a passive optical multi-channel network, based upon a single-hop star topology with an Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) at its centre. The AWG’s property of spatial wavelength reuse and both fixed-tuned and tuneable transceivers enable simultaneous control and data transmission. Our proposed medium access control protocol supports traffic differentiation and utilizes EDF (Earliest Deadline First) to schedule the traffic from input ports to output ports on the router. Our simulations show that the router treats QoS (Quality of Service) traffic well.

  • An expanding list of reliable paleomagnetic poles for Precambrian tectonic reconstructions

    • We present a compilation of reliable Precambrian paleomagnetic poles from three successive international workshops (in years 2009, 2014, 2017), comprising paleomagnetists specializing in Precambrian tectonic reconstructions. The working groups compiled lists of two global classes of poles, published through the end of 2017. “Grade-A” results are judged to provide essential constraints on tectonic reconstructions; “Grade-B” poles are judged to be suggestive of high-quality, but not yet demonstrated to be primary, or perhaps lacking precise geochronologic or other constraints. Our catalog documents a resurgence of high-quality data acquisition in recent years, and highlights specific cratons and time intervals that are most lacking in the data needed to reconstruct those blocks through supercontinental cycles.

  • A dose planning study for cardiac and lung dose sparing techniques in left breast cancer radiotherapy : Can free breathing helical tomotherapy be considered as an alternative for deep inspiration breath hold?

    • Purpose: To investigate the possibility to be able to offer left sided breast cancer patients, not suitable for DIBH, an organ at risk saving treatment. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients receiving radiotherapy for left breast cancer in DIBH were enrolled in the study. Planning CT scans were acquired in the same supine treatment position in FB and DIBH. 3DCRT_DIBH plans were designed and optimized using two parallel opposed tangent beams (with some additional segments) for the breast and chest wall and anterior-posterior fields for regional lymph nodes irradiation. Additionally, FB helical tomotherapy plans were optimized to minimize heart and lung dose. All forty plans were optimized with at least 95% of the total CTV covered by the 95% of prescribed dose of 50 Gy in 25 fractions. Results: HT_FB plans showed significantly better dose homogeneity and conformity compared to the 3DCRT_DIBH specially for regional nodal irradiation. The heart mean dose was almost comparable in 3DCRT_DIBH and HT_FB while the volume (%) of the heart receiving 25 Gy had a statistically significant reduction from 7.90 ± 3.33 in 3DCRT_DIBH to 0.88 ± 0.66 in HT_FB. HT_FB was also more effective in left descending artery (LAD) mean dose reduction about 100% from 30.83 ± 9.2 Gy to 9.7 ± 3.1. The ipsilateral lung volume receiving 20 Gy has a further reduction of 43 % in HT_FB compared with 3DCRT_DIBH. For low dose comparison, 3DCRT_DIBH was superior for contralateral organ sparing compared to the HT_FB due to the limited angle for dose delivery. Conclusion: For patients who cannot be a candidate for DIBH for any reason, HT in free breathing may be a good alternative and provides heart and ipsilateral lung dose sparing, however with the cost of increased dose to contralateral breast and lung.

  • Fermi observations of GRB 090510 : A short-hard gamma-ray burst with an additional, hard power-law component from 10 keV to GeV energies

    • We present detailed observations of the bright short-hard gamma-ray burst GRB 090510 made with the Gammaray Burst Monitor (GBM) and Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi observatory. GRB 090510 is the first burst detected by the LAT that shows strong evidence for a deviation from a Band spectral fitting function during the prompt emission phase. The time-integrated spectrum is fit by the sum of a Band function with E-peak = 3.9 +/- 0.3 MeV, which is the highest yet measured, and a hard power-law component with photon index -1.62 +/- 0.03 that dominates the emission below approximate to 20 keV and above approximate to 100 MeV. The onset of the high-energy spectral component appears to be delayed by similar to 0.1 s with respect to the onset of a component well fit with a single Band function. A faint GBM pulse and a LAT photon are detected 0.5 s before the main pulse. During the prompt phase, the LAT detected a photon with energy 30.5(-2.6)(+5.8) GeV, the highest ever measured from a short GRB. Observation of this photon sets a minimum bulk outflow Lorentz factor, Gamma greater than or similar to 1200, using simple.. opacity arguments for this GRB at redshift z = 0.903 and a variability timescale on the order of tens of ms for the approximate to 100 keV-few MeV flux. Stricter high confidence estimates imply Gamma greater than or similar to 1000 and still require that the outflows powering short GRBs are at least as highly relativistic as those of long-duration GRBs. Implications of the temporal behavior and power-law shape of the additional component on synchrotron/synchrotron self-Compton, external-shock synchrotron, and hadronic models are considered.

  • Supplier involvement in new product development : selection criteria

    • Purpose of this paper: Suppliers are becoming more and more important in the development of new products since firms are increasingly relying on suppliers to develop products with competitive technology. Not only do firms need to select the best available technology, but the most suitable supplier for the New Product Development, NPD, also has to be selected. Design/methodology: The paper is based on a case study of a joint development project between ABB and SKF. Findings: This paper describes the assessment-selection-integration process of involving suppliers in NPD, and investigates how different factors and mechanisms are related to the process. While most studies focus on one part of this process, this study gives an overview of the entire process and how the different parts affect other parts of the process. From the case, a model is developed which demonstrates how the processes of supplier involvement are related and affect each other. Additionally, the model classifies a number of elements that are of importance to the different stages of the supplier involvement process. Research limitations/implications: This is a single case study and thus generalization is limited. Practical implications: The results of this study suggest requirements that should be applied in supplier assessment, factors for supplier selection and elements that facilitate integration. Value of paper: The results of the study contribute to the supply management field by adding a useful study of supplier involvement in NPD.

  • Effect of taper and sawing methods on log conversion among selected sawmills in Edo State, Nigeria

    • This study was carried out to determine the effect of taper and sawing methods on log conversion among selected sawmills in Egor andOvia-North East Local Government Areas of Edo State. Ten representative sawmills and thirty round logs were sampled for eachspecies making a total of 300 logs based on the relative abundance of available timber species were sampled. The diameter of the logs,length and girth at small and large ends were measured before conversion. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Theresults obtained showed that Egor Local Government Area has the highest frequency of the selected species representing 56% of totallogs sampled while Ovia North-East Local Government Area has 44% of total logs sampled. Conversion efficiency varied from 56.49to 76.26%. Factors such as inherent defect in the timber, age of the machine and the severity of the log taper affected conversionefficiency at the sawmills. Lumber recovery efficiency increases with bigger log, short log length and narrower taper. Therefore, logsize, taper and log length have positive relationship on lumber recovery efficiency.
