  • A round robin study of flexible large-area roll-to-roll processed polymer solar cell modules
  • 2009
  • In: SOLAR ENERGY MATERIALS AND SOLAR CELLS. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-0248. ; 93:11, s. 1968-1977
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A round robin for the performance of roll-to-roll coated flexible large-area polymer solar-cell modules involving 18 different laboratories in Northern America, Europe and Middle East is presented. The study involved the performance measurement of the devices at one location (Riso DTU) followed by transportation to a participating laboratory for performance measurement and return to the starting location (Riso DTU) for re-measurement of the performance. It was found possible to package polymer solar-cell modules using a flexible plastic barrier material in such a manner that degradation of the devices played a relatively small role in the experiment that has taken place over 4 months. The method of transportation followed both air-mail and surface-mail paths.

  • Strain engineering for stereoselective bioreduction of dicarbonyl compounds by yeast reductases
  • 2005
  • In: FEMS Yeast Research. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1567-1364 .- 1567-1356. ; 5:6-7, s. 513-525
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Pure chiral molecules are needed in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry as intermediates for the production of drugs or fine chemicals. Microorganisms represent an attractive alternative to chemical synthesis since they have the potential to generate single stereoisomers in high enantiomeric excess (ee). The baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae can notably reduce dicarbonyl compounds (in particular alpha- and beta-diketones and keto esters) to chiral alcohols with high ee. However, products are formed at a low rate. Moreover, large amounts of co-substrate are required for the regeneration of NADPH that is the preferred co-factor in almost all the known dicarbonyl reductions. Traditionally, better ee, reduction rate and product titre have been achieved via process engineering. The advent of recombinant DNA technology provides an alternative strategy to improve productivity and yield by strain engineering. This review discusses two aspects of strain engineering: (i) the generation of strains with higher reductase activity towards dicarbonyl compounds and (ii) the optimisation of co-substrate utilisation for NADPH cofactor regeneration. • Northern Science and Research : Postsecondary Perspectives in the Northwest Territories
  • 2008
  • In: Journal of Northern Studies. - Umeå : Umeå University & The Royal Skyttean Society. - 1654-5915. ; :1, s. 23-52
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The International Polar Year (IPY) provides an opportunity to reflect on Northern science and research. For all Canadians, science and research should contribute to living a good life. A good life includes successfully making sense of the world within local contexts, sharing this knowledge beyond the immediate community and reconciling it with knowledge held by outsiders. Northern science and research are inherent in Traditional Dene, Inuvialuit and Metis knowledge; and they continue to be reflected in Northern governance, economy, and cultures. Alongside Aboriginal sciences are Western sciences; these are primarily disciplinary in nature and formally structure postsecondary education globally. Postsecondary science and research education is still being introduced to the Northwest Territories (NWT). Over the last forty years the territorial government has developed the capacity for educational services, funding, institutions, and authority through the Department of Education, Culture and Employment. The delivery of Northern-based postsecondary education through Aurora College provides Northerners with the capacity to generate science and research in the North. What place do science and research have in the North? (North in this paper demarcates the socially constructed geopolitical territories north of the 60th parallel that we use cautiously as a structural term for the purposes of our narrative.) What kinds of investments need to be made and will Northerners be prepared to overcome barriers and take advantage of the opportunities?
