  • Distribution grid impact of Plug-In Electric Vehicles charging at fast charging stations using stochastic charging model
  • 2011
  • In: Power Electronics and Applications (EPE 2011), Proceedings of the 2011-14th European Conference. - 9789075815153 ; :Aug. 30 2011-Sept. 1 2011, s. 1-11
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Charging PEVs (Plug-In Electric Vehicles) at public fast charging station can improve the public acceptance and increase their penetration level by solving problems related to vehicles' battery. However, the price for the impact of fast charging stations on the distribution grid has to be dealt with. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the impacts of fast charging stations on a distribution grid using a stochastic fast charging model and to present the charging model with some of its results. The model is used to investigate the impacts on distribution transformer loading and system bus voltage profiles of the test distribution grid. Stochastic and deterministic modelling approaches are also compared. It is concluded that fast charging stations affect transformer loading and system bus voltage profiles. Hence, necessary measures such as using local energy storage and voltage conditioning devices, such as SVC (Static Var Compensator), have to be used at the charging station to handle the problems. It is also illustrated that stochastic modelling approach can produce a more sound and realistic results than deterministic approach.

  • Virtual reality, video screen shots and sensor data for a large drop tower ride
  • 2020
  • In: Physics Education. - : IOP Publishing. - 0031-9120 .- 1361-6552. ; 55:5
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Large drop towers let you experience a couple of seconds of nearly free fall before stopping gracefully in magnetic brakes or bouncing a number of times on compressed air, as in the Turbo Drop tower considered in this work, where many complementary representations are used. An accelerometer taken along on the ride captured the forces experienced by the body, and a pressure sensor provided a simultaneous proxy measurement of elevation. These data can be treated numerically: integration of the accelerometer data gives a velocity graph which can be compared to derivatives of the elevation data obtained from the pressure sensor. Plotting elevation versus velocity gives a phase portrait for the damped oscillations of the gondola before it comes to a stop. These abstract mathematical and graphical representations are complemented by screen shots from a video as well as from a virtual reality movie offering the view from the point of a rider. Forces and acceleration overlaid in a 2D version of the VR movie give a geometric illustration of Newton's second law, in addition to the mathematical treatment. This work thus provides a wide range of representations, aimed to support student representational fluency and conceptual understanding of important force and motion concepts.

  • Safe and Suitable Firefighting
  • 2022
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The level of protection for personal protective equipment (PPE) in firefighting is important for Swedish shipowners; they want to be sure that the equipment they provide is sufficiently safe for the types of fires that can occur onboard. Shipowners also want to be updated on risks related to the carriage of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs). Safety products and equipment used onboard ships with a European flag must be certified in accordance with the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) and follow the regulations in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). For fire suits, this means that they must be certified according to one of three standards listed in MED. Two of these standards cover suits used in special cases, with very intense radiant heat, and should only be worn for short periods. The third standard, EN 469, is the same standard that is referred to the PPE Regulation 2016/42, making EN 469-approved fire suits used among European firefighters ashore. However, EN 469 contains two different performance levels where the lower level is not suitable for protection against risks encountered when fighting fires in enclosures. Based on a user study and a risk assessment for AFVs, a set of suggested changes to MED and SOLAS were prepared, together with a set of recommendations for operators that were found important but not subject for regulations. A ready-to-use quick guide, containing the most important results, has been developed for operators.

  • Effects of compartmental model structure and long-term inflow on model predictions
  • 2005
  • In: Radioprotection - Revue de la Societé Francaise de Radioprotection. - : EDP Sciences. - 0033-8451 .- 1769-700X. ; 40:1, s. 477-483
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Model predictions of solute transport in a wetland were compared with tracer experimental data to illustrate that the number of compartments in a compartmental model should be selected according to certain rules to accurately describe the transport process. If the input pulse is short, the model structure affects the output significantly. The temporal moments of the residence time distribution was obtained from a general solution of the compartmental model in the Laplace domain derived with an arbitrary inflow pollutograph. The variance of the residence time can be used as a useful tool to analyse the effect of model structure and long-term inflow pollutograph on the response of the model predictions.
