  • Mesomorphism in columnar phases studied by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance

    • In this paper, we present C-13 and H-1 NMR investigations of 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11-hexahexyl-thiotriphenylene (HHTT). The measurements were carried out under both static and magic-angle spinning conditions. The phase diagram of HHTT is K <-> H <-> D-hd <-> I, where H is a helical phase and D-hd is a columnar liquid crystal. The motivation was to characterize the molecular order and dynamics and to investigate differences at the molecular level between the two mesophases: H and D-hd. It is shown that D-hd is a conventional columnar liquid crystal, where the molecular core undergoes fast rotation about the symmetry axis. The orientational order in this mesophase is lower and the temperature dependence of the order parameter is steeper than in other triphenylene-based compounds. On the other hand, in the helical phase the core, similarly to the solid phase, is essentially rigid. The difference between the solid and helical phases is mainly manifested in an increased mobility of the aliphatic chains observed in the latter phase. In addition, the sample exhibits thermal history effects, which are observed in the different behavior upon cooling and heating.

    • Complex SOCs are increasingly tested in a modular fashion, which enables us to record the yield-per-module. In this paper, we consider the yield-per-module as the pass probability of the module s manufacturing test. We use it to exploit the abort-on-fail feature of ATEs, in order to reduce the expected test application time. We present a model for expected test application time, which obtains increasing accuracy due to decreasing granularity of the abortable test unit. For a given SOC, with a modular test architecture consisting of wrappers and disjunct TAMs, and for given pass probabilities per module test, we schedule the tests on each TAM such that the expected test application time is minimized. We describe two heuristic scheduling approaches, one without and one with preemption. Experimental results for the ITC 02 SOC Test Benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, as we achieve up to 97% reduction in the expected test application time, without any modification to the SOC or ATE.

    • Six novel bent-shaped monomers were synthesized such as substituted/or non-substituted 1,3-phenylene bis-{4-[(4-allyloxy)phenylazo]benzoate} (4a–c) and substituted/or non-substituted 1,3-phenylene bis-{4-[3-(4-allyloxy-3-fluoro)phenylazo]benzoate} (4d–f) in which azobenzene moiety in the periphery and substituted/or non-substituted resorcinol as central unit with polymeriable double bonds are linked at both ends of all the molecules. The mesophase behavior was investigated using polarizing optical microscopy, DSC and XRD measurements. Four members of the family show an intercalated smectic (Smintercal) phase and two were crystalline in nature. The trans-form of azo compounds (4a–f) showed a strong band in the UV region (355–366 nm), which was attributed to the p–p* transition, and a weak band in the visible region at 455–465 nm due to the n–p* transition. When one of the azo dye (4d) is mixed with liquid crystal as a guest, showed greater increase in thermal back relaxation time which is useful for creation of optical image storage devices.

    • Three novel bent-shaped monomers, namely 1,3-phenylene bis-{4-[4-(n-allyloxyalkyloxy)phenylazo]benzoate} 5a–c, containing azobenzene as side arms, resorcinol as central units and terminal double bonds as polymerisable functional groups were synthesised and characterised. The mesophase behaviour was investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction measurements and it was found that all three compounds display SmAintercal mesophases. These bent-shaped molecules exhibit strong photoisomerisation behaviour in solutions in which trans to cis isomerisation takes about 50 seconds whereas the reverse process takes almost 31 hours
