  • Towards superhydrophobic coatings made by non-fluorinated polymers sprayed from a supercritical solution

    • The objective of this study was to create a superhydrophobic surface using polymers that are non-fluorinated and applying them to a surface via rapid expansion of a supercritical solution (RESS). Solubility studies of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and a statistical copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl pivalate (P(VAc-VPi))in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) were carried out using an extraction procedure. It was found that the most suitable process parameters for spraying these polymers using the RESS technique were 30 MPa, 40 degrees C and 10% (v/v) acetone as a co-solvent. The surfaces produced were characterized in terms of their morphology and hydrophobic properties by scanning electron microscopy and contact angle measurements, respectively. The most hydrophobic surfaces were obtained by spraying the P(VAc-VPi) copolymers, giving advancing water contact angles in the range of 120-155 degrees due to the hydrophobic character of the polymer and the microstructure formed with the RESS technique. These results show great promise for the creation of superhydrophobic surfaces using non-fluorinated polymers applied to surfaces via RESS technique.

  • Plant treatments of EAF slag for its use as construction materials

    • At the steel plant of Höganäs Sweden AB, different steel grades were produced using an Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF). The slag tapped by the EAF often disintegrated during cooling. Slag fines from the disintegration are difficult to handle and to use as materials in construction. The plant tests of EAF slag treatments using stabilizer MCP-F of high P2O5 content were thus conducted, with 1st and 2nd campaign adding 10 and 20 kg MCP-F/ton slag, respectively. The MCP-F addition in slag pots and other test operations were carried out smoothly, without impacting the EAF steel production. Rates P2O5 recovery in the EAF slag were lower in some test heats. Studies may thus be carried out in future to increase the P2O5 recovery from MCP-F, hence, achieving a higher efficiency of stabilization treatments for the slag from the EAF plant.

    • We identified signaling pathways by which IL-6 regulates skeletal muscle differentiation and metabolism. Primary human skeletal muscle cells were exposed to IL-6 (25 ng/ml either acutely or for several days), and small interfering RNA gene silencing was applied to measure glucose and fat metabolism. Chronic IL-6 exposure increased myotube fusion and formation and the mRNA expression of glucose transporter 4, peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR)α, PPARδ, PPARγ, PPARγ coactivator 1, glycogen synthase, myocyte enhancer factor 2D, uncoupling protein 2, fatty acid transporter 4, and IL-6 (P < 0.05), whereas glucose transporter 1, CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein-α, and uncoupling protein 3 were decreased. IL-6 increased glucose incorporation into glycogen, glucose uptake, lactate production, and fatty acid uptake and oxidation, concomitant with increased phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), signal transducer and activator of transcription 3, and ERK1/2. IL-6 also increased phosphatidylinositol (PI) 3-kinase activity (450%; P < 0.05), which was blunted by subsequent insulin-stimulation (P < 0.05). IL-6-mediated glucose metabolism was suppressed, but lipid metabolism was unaltered, by inhibition of PI3-kinase with LY294002. The small interfering RNA-directed depletion of AMPK reduced IL-6-mediated fatty acid oxidation and palmitate uptake but did not reduce glycogen synthesis. In summary, IL-6 increases glycogen synthesis via a PI3-kinase-dependent mechanism and enhances lipid oxidation via an AMPK-dependent mechanism in skeletal muscle. Thus, IL-6 directly promotes skeletal muscle differentiation and regulates muscle substrate utilization, promoting glycogen storage and lipid oxidation.

  • The Law's Markets : Envisioning and effecting the boundaries of competition

    • Recent research has suggested that one of the key ways in which economics and cognate calculative discourses and practices ‘perform’ the economy is through the drawing of conceptual boundaries between economic activities and entities of various sorts. One such boundary is the boundary between markets. This article shows that a critical contemporary arena for the differentiation of one product or service market from another is competition (or antitrust) law, which, through its work of market definition, seeks to identify the boundaries of competition: the location of the borders between meaningful economic spaces within which buyers and sellers encounter one another and establish prices. The article argues that in envisioning markets (‘the law's markets’), competition law simultaneously constitutes markets, and it demonstrates this through an empirical examination of the exercise of such law in three economic sectors: insurance, grocery retailing, and pay-television. It also shows, however, that competition law is perennially dogged by conflict – both over the placement of such conceptual boundaries, and over the very process of placement and the status of the market boundary itself – and that its application and effects can only be understood in this light.
