  • Looking back to move forwards: A social and cultural history of home heating (JUSTHEAT) : Interim findings from the first round of case studies
  • 2023
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This short report is one of a series of outputs to flow from the international, interdisciplinary project ‘Looking back to move forwards: a social and cultural historyof home heating’ (JUSTHEAT), funded through the Collaboration of Humanities andSocial Sciences in Europe (CHANSE) initiative, which began in 2022 and runs until2025. Within this project, we aim to understand how major changes to home heatingand heating technology over the last 70 years have impacted our lives in diverse andoften profound ways and how these impacts are experienced differentially acrossplace, time, social groups and even between different members of the same household.Ultimately, we aim to distil learning from these historic accounts to promote a morehumane, user centred and just approach to the current transition from fossil fuelled tolow carbon heating systems across the UK and the EU. In pursuit of this, the projectemploys a combination of oral histories, archival research, a network of fine artists andinnovative approaches to bridge the chasm between policy makers designing lowcarbon heating transitions and the needs and expectations of the citizens they serve.

  • Energigemenskaper i Sverige
  • 2021
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • The Colour of Heating was Red: An overview of historical and policy narratives of domestic heating in Sweden, 1940 - present : JustHeat Strand II Report
  • 2023
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This report has been written within the project Looking Back to Move Forward: a Social and Cultural History of Heating (JustHeat). The aim of the project is to unpack previous heating transitions at the home front since 1940 in order to enable more just and inclusive heating transitions in the future. The background is the notion that home heating transitions are deeply personal in the sense that they affect daily routines, division of labour between family members, and how we use our homes and energy alike. While there is much to be learned from intended as well as unintended effects of previous transitions, little effort has been put into understanding the lived experiences of technological changes in home heating, despite the uneven yet deep impacts they have had in society. This project will fill this gap by using oral histories to collect individual and collective experiences of home heating transitions that can complement and nuance dominating transition narratives. As a starting point, this report aims to tell the history of home heating in Sweden as it has been documented and told in policymaking and in the public debate. This will primarily be done by reviewing formative political documents and newspaper articles. In so doing, current transitions in domestic heating can be better understood in light of past transitions, and this report can be used as a formal narrative against which to confirm, complement, and contrast the oral histories. It is by no means a complete review of the events, arguments, and effects of home heating transitions since the 1940’s, but it captures some of the most important changes that – more or less, and for better or for worse – have affected people’s everyday lives.

  • Energy communities in Sweden: Challenging established ideas of aim, place and engagement
  • 2024
  • In: Energy Research & Social Science. - 2214-6326. ; 115
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper contributes to the discussion about the importance of different energy community (EC) characteristics. Based on a questionnaire to the members of solar ECs in Sweden, it investigates (1) to what extent EC members agree with the established view of the “ideal” energy community, as described in previous literature, and (2) to what extent the studied ECs match the characteristics of such an “ideal” energy community, according to their members. The analysis addresses six dimensions: process, outcomes, place, interest, organization, and social interaction. The results show that EC members confirm the importance of member involvement (process), shared interests (interest), and a sense of togetherness (social interaction) but do not find either geographical proximity (place) or spending time with other members (social interaction) particularly important. The studied ECs score low on both actual and desired member participation in management (process), decision-making (organization), and other community-related activities (social interaction). Based on the results, we argue that ECs with environmental aims are less dependent on member engagement and social interaction than socially motivated ECs and also less likely to create conflicts of interests with local communities than economically motivated ECs; that allowing non-local membership does not necessarily interfere with securing local benefits; that local anchoring matters but does not necessarily require geographical proximity; and that a sense of community can be based on a common mission rather than on social interaction. Overall, this indicates that a more nuanced view on aim, place and engagement is warranted.

  • Sol i gemenskap: deltagande, organisation och regelverk (SiG) - slutrapport
  • 2024
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Breathlessness and exercise performance to predict mortality in long-term oxygen therapy : The population-based DISCOVERY study
  • 2023
  • In: Respiratory Medicine. - : Elsevier. - 0954-6111 .- 1532-3064. ; 216
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic respiratory failure treated with long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) often have severe breathlessness, impaired exercise performance, and high but variable mortality that is difficult to predict. We aimed to evaluate breathlessness and exercise performance upon starting LTOT as predictors of overall and short-term mortality.METHODS: This was a longitudinal, population-based study of patients who initiated LTOT between 2015 and 2018 in Sweden. Breathlessness was measured using the Dyspnea Exertion Scale, and exercise performance using the 30s-Sit-To-Stand test. Associations with overall and three-month mortality were analyzed using Cox-regression. Subgroup analyses were performed for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and interstitial lung disease (ILD) respectively. The predictive capacity of models was assessed using a C-statistic.RESULTS: A total of 441 patients (57.6% female, aged 75.4 ± 8.3 years) were analyzed, of whom 141 (32%) died during a median follow-up of 260 (IQR 75-460) days. Both breathlessness and exercise performance were independently associated with overall mortality in the crude models, but only exercise performance remained independently associated with overall mortality when models were adjusted for other predictors, when short-term mortality was analyzed, or when breathlessness and exercise capacity were analyzed concurrently. The multivariable model including exercise performance but not breathlessness provided a relatively high predictive capacity for overall mortality, C-statistic 0.756 (95% CI 0.702-0.810). Similar results were seen in the COPD and ILD subgroups.CONCLUSION: Exercise performance as measured by the 30s-STS may be useful to identify patients with higher mortality on LTOT for optimized management and follow-up.
