  • Sediment Control Strategies for Sustainable Water Intake
  • 2021
  • In: Dams and Reservoirs. - : Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). - 1368-1494 .- 1756-8404. ; 31:1, s. 21-30
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The negative effect of sediment on hydraulic structures makes sustainability one of the most important things to consider in designing and operating of such structures. Intakes and pumping stations need a suitable strategy for that purpose. A proposed strategy of pumping rate control is evaluated in this study. Also, sub-watershed sediment control and the use of earth dikes are also examined. A suitable control code of the SSIIM2 model was prepared to simulate the flow and sediment of a pumping station at Mosul Dam reservoir as a case study, which suffers from sedimentation problems. The results indicate that the maximum pumping rate increased the amount of sediment withdrawn by about 16% compared to a reference value at 25% pumping capacity, and the variation in the amount deposited in front of the intake was ±3%. The seasonal flow of the sub-watershed has a significant effect on the reservoir's sediment concentration, but it is limited to the rainfall period and the zone of flow near the sub-watershed outlets. The most effective strategy was a dike with a suitable pumping rate. Siting the dike correctly helps to reduce sediment deposition in front of and inside the structure by about 47% and 42%, respectively.

  • Social media applications in external B2B transactions : An empirical analysis of the Finnish technology industry
  • 2015
  • In: IFKAD 2015. - : Institute of Knowledge Asset Management (IKAM). - 9788896687079 ; , s. 1930-1940
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Despite the popularity of the topic, social media research is still limited and focuses largely on the role of consumer-to-consumer (C2C) and business-to-consumer (B2C) domains (Volpentesta and Felicetti, 2012; Michaelidou et al., 2011). In many aspects, B2C social media practices are not directly useful for inter- organizational and business-to-business (B2B) purposes. The main aim of this paper is to increase the understanding of the current applications of social media in external B2B transactions. This is carried out through an extensive survey of companies in the technology industry which are operating purely in B2B markets, having only other companies as customers. We wanted to understand how industrial B2B companies currently apply social media in their own inter- organizational applications, what potential they see for social media in this context, and what kind of support they need to better adopt social media together with their customers and partners. A population of 2488 Finnish decision makers from the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries were observed. Based on the answers of 143 different companies, 125 companies were found to wholly (100%) represent B2B markets, and these were chosen as the sample of this particular study.Studies on social media, especially survey-based studies, have not focused soley on B2B companies, particularly on the inter-organizational applications of social media in B2Bs, except for the B2B-marketing oriented study of Michaelidou et al. (2011) and the study of social media utilization in B2B relationships by Pettersson et al. (2014). This study extends these previous studies by creating new understanding of the maturity of social media integration in businesses, organizational business problems that companies perceive can be solved with social media, and approaches that can support social media adoption in B2B companies.Managerially, the results can be used, for instance, to better understand the various possibilities of applying social media for inter-organizational use in B2Bs, which are currently only superficially understood by a significant portion of managers. This can help support and facilitate external social media use in B2Bs.

  • Influence of chemical pretreatment on the surface properties of silicon nitride powder
  • 1999
  • In: Colloids and Surfaces A. - 0927-7757 .- 1873-4359. ; 158, s. 327-341
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Adsorption energy distributions for nitrogen at the surface of silicon nitride samples with different pretreatment have been obtained and related to the heats of adsorption determined by BET analysis of adsorption isotherms. This has confirmed the conjecture that, in normal conditions, the surface of silicon nitride is covered by a layer of silica, as suggested by earlier studies. An attempt to correlate adsorption data with ab initio potentials of the adsorbate-adsorbent interaction has been made. The charge-regulated behaviour of the surface of silicon nitride in aqueous electrolytic solutions has been investigated in relation to charge titration and electrokinetic experiments. An important role of surface hydrolysis in the interpretation of experimental data has been pointed out. Based on the surface ionization parameters extracted from charge titration data, interparticle forces governing the stability of colloidal dispersions have been calculated in the framework of Derjaguin's approximation.

  • Coke, Pepsi or Mecca Cola? Why product characteristics affect the likelihood of collective action problems and boycott success
  • 2017
  • In: Politics Groups and Identities. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2156-5503 .- 2156-5511. ; 5:2, s. 220-241
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Under what conditions do individuals who profess to boycott products align actual and intended consumption habits? Inconsistency between self-reported participation and practice can help explain why few boycott campaigns harm targets despite high political consumption rates reported in surveys of Americans and Europeans. Arab boycotts are fertile yet unexplored settings in which to assess this proposition. Using data from 820 Algerian students surveyed after the 2004 Abu Ghraib scandal, we evaluate whether boycotters are more likely than others to weigh country-of-origin in preferences for soda, clothing, and mobile phones. Almost 60% claimed to boycott US goods - consistent with cross-national survey rates and a 2007 nationally representative survey of 800 Algerians - but fewer respondents expressed actual brand preferences consistent with this desire. We extend the political consumption literature by expanding its geographic scope and elaborating a mechanism by which product characteristics minimize or magnify collective action problems that undermine participation. Our results suggest that political consumers are more likely to maintain boycott behavior when targeting substitutable goods linked closely to identity (symbolic and visible), thereby reducing direct and information costs and enabling social network enforcement.

  • Migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees : Different labels for immigrants influence attitudes through perceived benefits in nine countries
  • 2023
  • In: European Journal of Social Psychology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0046-2772 .- 1099-0992. ; 53:5, s. 970-983
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The world is witnessing the highest level of displacement of people on record. Public discourse often uses labels to describe people on the move such as ‘migrants’, ‘asylum seekers’, or ‘refugees’ interchangeably. A preregistered study in nine countries (Australia, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom; N = 2844) tested experimentally the effect of these three labels on attitudes towards immigrants and immigration policies. We found a significant difference between the label ‘migrant’ and both ‘asylum seeker’ and ‘refugee’ on the social distance scale. Participants were happier if migrants, rather than asylum seekers and refugees, were their neighbours, friends, or partners. The effect was mediated by perceived benefits, but not threats, whereby migrants were perceived to bring more benefits to receiving societies than asylum seekers and refugees. To increase the acceptance of immigrants, speakers may consider specifying the given group and emphasize benefits that immigrants bring to receiving societies.

  • Proteomics of protein secretion by aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans
  • 2012
  • In: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 7:7, s. e41662-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The extracellular proteome (secretome) of periodontitis-associated bacteria may constitute a major link between periodontitis and systemic diseases. To obtain an overview of the virulence potential of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, an oral and systemic human pathogen implicated in aggressive periodontitis, we used a combined LC-MS/MS and bioinformatics approach to characterize the secretome and protein secretion pathways of the rough-colony serotype a strain D7S. LC-MS/MS revealed 179 proteins secreted during biofilm growth. Further to confirming the release of established virulence factors (e.g. cytolethal distending toxin [CDT], and leukotoxin [LtxA]), we identified additional putative virulence determinants in the secretome. These included DegQ, fHbp, LppC, Macrophage infectivity protein (MIP), NlpB, Pcp, PotD, TolB, and TolC. This finding indicates that the number of extracellular virulence-related proteins is much larger than previously demonstrated, which was also supported by in silico analysis of the strain D7S genome. Moreover, our LC-MS/MS and in silico data revealed that at least Type I, II, and V secretion are actively used to excrete proteins directly into the extracellular space, or via two-step pathways involving the Sec/Tat systems for transport across the inner membrane, and outer membrane factors, secretins and auto-transporters, respectively for delivery across the outer membrane. Taken together, our results provide a molecular basis for further elucidating the role of A. actinomycetemcomitans in periodontal and systemic diseases.

  • Pedagogiska meriteringsmodeller vid Sveriges universitet och högskolor 2021
  • 2021
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
