  • Remixing Classics for the Screen : Woody Allen and the Classical Tradition
  • 2015
  • In: Studia Oliveriana. - Pesaro : Bononia University Press. - 0562-2964. ; 1, s. 55-76
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Several films by Woody Allen (Interiors, Oedipus Wrecks, Match Point and Mighty Aphrodite) contain elements of classical tradition that have been neglected or oversimplified by film scholarship as references to the director’s personal engagement with psychoanalysis. Using Mighty Aphrodite (1995) as illustration, I argue that these films convey the expression of contemporary social issues through a complex and multi-layered reception of classical culture that goes beyond pure psychoanalysis. In Mighty Aphrodite, specifically, Allen deploys the strict formalism of tragedy and the myth of Oedipus as film mechanisms for contemporary societal discourse. Via evaluation of film and narrative, I demonstrate that Allen’s classical reception is self-reflexive as it refers back to the very processes of performative arts. Furthermore, Allen utilizes the classical tradition as a form of expression in contemporary classical Hollywood narratives and creates a rich cultural experience for his audience; a cinematic treatise on cultural remix, dramatic formalism and classical reception per se.

  • Remediating transcultural memories of postpunk Manchester : homosocial nostalgia and contemporary city branding
  • 2015
  • In: Atrocity Exhibition. A two day symposium on Joy Division. University of Limerick, 25 – 26 November 2015.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Remediating transcultural memories of postpunk Manchester: homosocial nostalgia and contemporary city brandingThis paper offers a memory studies perspective on the remediation of cultural memories around Joy Division and their legacy. Drawing on my research which situates itself at the interface of memory studies and film studies, I will introduce the notion of 'transcultural memory' (Erll 2011) into the study of postpunk memories and their adaptations. In the former industrial cities of the Northwest of England, especially in Liverpool and Manchester, the heritage of popular music has contributed to relaunching the cities as creative clusters. This paper critically examines the highly gendered remediation of popular music heritage and the appropriation and reworking of postpunk memories into an official narrative. I argue that remediation creates certain nodal points around which a number of narratives of the past are constructed.  Alongside with, for example, Factory Records and The Hacienda, Joy Division is one of the nodal points of the current memory boom around postpunk Manchester. These nodal points (or chronotopes in the Bakhtinian sense) are perpetuated by the ongoing remediation. At the same time remediation both opens and closes discursive spaces for different subject positions. This process in turns has repercussions on canon formation: it highlights some bands (especially Joy Division), while side-lining others (for instance The Fall or The Durutti Column). Moreover, remediation constructs mnemonic spaces which are predominantly heteronormative and male-oriented – all the more surprising since Manchester has been a traditional stronghold for LGBT-culture for decades. Therefore, the formation of Manchester's cultural memory is a highly gendered process. In most of the ’memory works’ around 1980s Manchester the dominant narrative is defined by a homosocial (Sedgwick) and patriarchal perspective, which is white and heteronormative and in which feminist, queer or Black voices are excluded.

  • Between positive representation and camp performance: Three films from the Swedish Lesbian and gay liberation movement
  • 2015
  • In: Journal of Scandinavian Cinema. - : Intellect. - 2042-7891 .- 2042-7905. ; 5:2, s. 137-154
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article discusses three unique films emanating from the lesbian and gay liberation movement in Sweden in the 1970s: Bögjävlar/Damned Queers, directed by a group of gay men who lived communally in Stockholm; Kvinnan i ditt liv är du/‘The Woman in Your Life Is You’, directed by Lesbisk Front/Lesbian Front, also based in Stockholm; and Eva & Maria, directed by three women in Göteborg. Based on archival research and interviews, I discuss how the three films’ different production and reception histories offer insight into the relationship between Swedish politics around sexuality and LGBTQ issues. These largely unknown films are crucial examples of self-presentation. They offer salient critiques of the ways that homosexuality was viewed and represented in 1970s Sweden. Formally, they range from parody to realism. By shedding light on these films, the article problematizes the standardized narrative of Swedish sexual freedom and progressiveness. © 2015 Intellect Ltd Article.
