  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The chapter examines theories of public visibility of religions. The separation of public life and religion is not as strong as the secularization paradigm implied. Casanova's (1994) concept of deprivatization of religion, Berger's (1999) idea of the return of religion and Habermas's (2008) concept of post-secular society are three ways of expressing the public visibility of religion. The chapter focuses primarily on the three-part description of the post-secular society by Habermas (2008). The chapter also discusses the relationship between religion and politics. Recent political discussions about family, marriage and sexuality have opened the doors of politics to religion in Finland. The author interprets the role of Nordic churches as social resources as an example of a post-secular situation.
