  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The founding of a parish church is one of the most revolutionary changes in the history of the local community. The church was regarded as a meeting place between God and men. The priest came daily before the face of God as a representative of the local Christian community. The relationship between priest and parishioners could be viewed as a contractual one, where the priest, who carried out acts of daily worship, had his living provided for by the parishioners. His duties were regulated in secular as well as in canon law. The Christian calendar set the rhythm of the yearly cycle. The article also deals with confession and other aspects of parish life in the Middle Ages.

  • På väg mot en kristen religionsteologi : En undersökning av det kristna uppenbarelseanspråket i förhållande till andra religioners uppenbarelseanspråk
  • 1999
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This dissertation is an analysis of the relationship between the Christian claim of revelation from God and similar claims in other religions. Its starting point is a religious interpretation of religion which views claims of revelation as cognitive assertions worthy of serious consideration. This book seeks to clarify the positions taken by some leading Christian theologians on revelation claims in other religions and to come to grips with the fundamental questions raised for Christian theology. The examined material is of two kinds. First, three examples of different theological views are presented on the relation between the Christian belief in claims of revelation and truth in other religions: an exclusivistic view (L.Newbigin), a pluralistic view (J. Hick), and an inclusivistic view (G. D'Costa). Secondly, the theoretically important discussion following publication of the main books of the three theologians is presented, as well as attempts to widen the debate. The analysis aims at finding the crucial theological questions.Four issues fundamental for Christian theology emerged as the cornerstones in the debate. The first concerns the possibility to determine whether a claim of revelation is true, and if so, which kinds of criteria could be used. The second question is whether the validity of the crucial criterion is particular or universal. The consequences of the different positions for the relation between Christianity and other religions is the third question. The fourth question deals with the content of the crucial Christian criterion. The concluding chapter argues that it must be possible to determine the veracity of a revelation claim if one aims at a religious interpretation of religion. The crucial criterion must be theoretical and focus not only on the ethical or spiritual consequences of the religion. The validity of the criterion must be held to be universal, but only temporary universal. This means that the criterion has a provisional character and is always open to modification from other religions and their revelation claims. This study seeks a way to combine a provisional belief in the truth of the Christian claim of revelation and an openness towards the revelation claims in other religions.

  • Skapelseteologi : En studie av teologiska motiv i Gunnar Edmans texter
  • 1999
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This study focuses on texts written by the author Gunnar Edman (1915-1995). The purpose is to discern his interpretation of the world as a creation. In this connection the fundamentally important issue of the relation between theology and natural science is also discussed. The dissertation shows examples of how dialogue between theology and natural science characterised by mutual enrichment in knowledge can appear. Mutual enrichment throws light on important theological questions. One such question concerns the origins of creation and its relation to the cosmological standard model (Big Bang). This relation is elucidated in the dissertation. Further light is thrown on the on-going creation in relation to cosmic and biological evolution. The theology of the new creation can also be given new light through scientific deliberation. A special theological focus in the dissertation is directed to the human role in creation. Natural science can look at this role from the perspective of the so-called "anthropic principles". This is associated with another theological theme: God's self-limitation expressed in the terms wheat grain theology or kenosis theology. This theological theme finds support in nature through itsself-creating power and through the human subject's possibility of taking his/her own decisions. These jointly important issues for theology and natural science receive new light through Gunnar Edman's texts full of imagery, which the dissertation makes clear. The method to expose this is to compare Edman's texts with theologies of contemporary professional theologians who develop their theology in dialoge with scientists. These theologians are mainly Arthur Peacocke, John Polkinghorne, Jürgen Moltmann but the dissertation also refers to among others John Macquarrie and Janet Martin Soskice.
