  • A role for 'sensor simulation' and 'pre-emptive learning' in computer aided robotics
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: 26th International Symposium on Industrial Robots, Symposium Proceedings. - : Mechanical Engineering Publ.. - 1860580009 ; , s. 135-140
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sensor simulation in Computer Aided Robotics (CAR) can enhance the capabilities of such systems to enable off-line generation of programmes for sensor driven robots. However, such sensor simulation is not commonly supported in current computer aided robotic environments. A generic sensor object model for the simulation of sensors in graphical environments is described in this paper. Such a model can be used to simulate a variety of sensors, for example photoelectric, proximity and ultrasonic sensors. Tests results presented here show that this generic sensor model can be customised to emulate the characteristics of the real sensors. The preliminary findings from the first off-line trained mobile robot are presented. The results indicate that sensor simulation within CARs can be used to train robots to adapt to changing environments.

  • Perspectives on Demand Side Management
  • 1996
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This work treats recommendations based on energy systems engineering. The focus is on what can be learned by different methods about the roles that demand-side energy efficiency should play in the energy system. In the first part of the thesis, two case studies of local energy planning demonstrate the role of demand-side energy efficiency: energy systems engineering suggests a design in which energy efficiency improvements are aligned with the whole technical energy system. One result of the case studies is that the energy consumers invest in fewer energy efficiency measures than recommended by the methodologies applied. This indicates that there are important aspects of demand-side energy efficiency that are ignored by the methodologies used. In this work, the cause of the difference between the recommended and observed investments is addressed by an investigation of the customer's transaction cost for the energy efficiency investment. The second part is an application of the viable system model and focuses on the role of energy efficiency activities at a public energy utility. A case study demonstrates that most energy efficiency activities were run to support energy sales and, hence, were totally entwined with the traditional business. This role observed is compared with that suggested by the demand-side management methodology. The comparison shows that demand-side management is not capable of handling important aspects of interrelations between energy efficiency activities and energy sales. The work provides a language for further discussion of the role of energy efficiency activities at energy utilities.

  • Intonation preferences for major thirds with non-beating ensemble sounds
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Proc. of Nordic Acoustical Meeting. - Helsinki. ; , s. 359-365
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The frequency ratios, or intervals, of the twelve-tone scale can be mathematically dejned in several slightly diferent ways, each of which may be more or less appropriate in different musical contexts. For maximum mobility in musical key, instruments of our time with fixed tuning are typically tuned in equal temperament, except for performances of early music or avant-garde contemporary music. Some contend that pure intonation, being free of beats, is more natural, and would be preferred in instruments with variable tuning. The sound of choirs is such that beats are very unlikely to serve as cues for intonation. Choral performers have access to variable tuning, yet have not been shown to prefer pure intonation. The difference between alternative intonation schemes is largest for the major third interval. Choral directors and other musically expert subjects were asked to adjust to their preference the intonation of 20 major third intervals in synthetic ensemble sounds. The preferred size of the major third was 395.4 cents, with intra-subject averages ranging from 388 to 407 cents.
