  • A Multidisciplinary Approach to Capability in Age and Ageing
  • 2022
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This open access book provides insight on how to interpret capability in ageing – one’s individual ability to perform actions in order to reach goals one has reason to value – from a multidisciplinary approach. With for the first time in history there being more people in the world aged 60 years and over than there are children below the age of 5, the book describes this demographic trends as well as the large global challenges and important societal implications this will have such as a worldwide increase in the number of persons affected with dementia, and in the ratio of retired persons to those still in the labor market. Through contributions from many different research areas, it discussed how capability depends on interactions between the individual (e.g. health, genetics, personality, intellectual capacity), environment (e.g. family, friends, home, work place), and society (e.g. political decisions, ageism, historical period). The final chapter by the editors summarizes the differences and similarities in these contributions. As such this book provides an interesting read for students, teachers and researchers at different levels and from different fields interested in capability and multidisciplinary research.

  • Fem kärnfrågor som Coronakommissionen måste ta upp : Five core questions for the Corona Commission
  • 2020
  • In: Göteborgsposten. - 1103-9345. ; :20201005
  • Journal article (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract

  • A Normative Approach to Artificial Moral Agency
  • 2020
  • In: Minds and Machines. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0924-6495 .- 1572-8641. ; 30:2, s. 195-218
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper proposes a methodological redirection of the philosophical debate on artificial moral agency (AMA) in view of increasingly pressing practical needs due to technological development. This “normative approach” suggests abandoning theoretical discussions about what conditions may hold for moral agency and to what extent these may be met by artificial entities such as AI systems and robots. Instead, the debate should focus on how and to what extent such entities should be included in human practices normally assuming moral agency and responsibility of participants. The proposal is backed up by an analysis of the AMA debate, which is found to be overly caught in the opposition between so-called standard and functionalist conceptions of moral agency, conceptually confused and practically inert. Additionally, we outline some main themes of research in need of attention in light of the suggested normative approach to AMA.

  • AI och framtidens försvarsmedicin
  • 2020
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • EP9 Starlight Reserves
  • 2023
  • In: Göteborgs Botaniska Trädgård, GIBCA Extended, 2023-08-19.
  • Artistic work (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The sculpture EP9 Starlight Reserves was installed in Amerikadammen in Göteborgs Botaniska Trädgård and part of GIBCA Extended 2023. This work is situated in the expanded field of sculpture, where the negotiation with a specific situation plays a central role in material investigations of environmental and sustainability concerns. The shape and title of the sculpture derive from the container of old batteries, "Exposed Pallet 9," which the International Space Station launched into space in 2021 to circulate around the Earth for 2-4 years before entering the Earth's atmosphere and hopefully burn up. [1] Commercial interests, colonization, and tourism led by rich nations and private companies contribute to the increase of space debris. The main inquiry of this research project is how artistic work, through visualization in sculptural form, can draw attention to scientific observations and advocacy in establishing international environmental space law concerning space debris. By using recycled plastic from electronic scrap for the large-scale IRBAM printing of the sculpture, the work highlights the potential for sustainable and ephemeral materials in sculptural production to promote environmental awareness and question the validity of the standard requirement for "permanence" in public sculpture. 3D printing in collaboration with Samuel Johansson and Woodrow Wiest RISE – AM center in Mölndal, Sweden with in-kind funding. Supported by Göteborgs Stad Kultur och Göteborgs Botaniska Trädgård. [1] Mike Wall, “Space station tosses 2.9-ton hunk of space junk overboard. • Introduction
  • 2022
  • In: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Capability in Age and Ageing. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030780654
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In 2020, for the first time in history, there were more people in the world aged 60 years and over than there were children below the age of 5 years. The population aged over 65 years is projected to increase from one billion in 2019 to more than two billion in 2050, and those aged over 80 years are projected to increase from 143 to 426 million, with the largest increase occurring in the developing world (UN World Population Prospects, 2019). This demographic trend constitutes the largest global health challenge, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The European Union has set it as one of the major challenges in Horizon 2020 and it has important societal implications (European Commission, 2020). The proportion of retired individuals will increase, leading to an increased ratio between those who have exited the workforce and those still active in the labour market. Thus, ageing represents a global societal and scientific challenge requiring integrated efforts, multidisciplinary translational research approaches and social innovations that build on ideas of potentials and capabilities, emphasising the value of old age.

  • 2022
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Child Rights, Legal Theory and Social Advocacy
  • 2024
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Arguing for a pro-democratic approach in authoritarian times, this book challenges the focus on age in identifying children in child rights. It argues that, even for the purposes of a benevolent rights regime, adopting a monist construction of child identity artificially separates the law from reality, potentially foreclosing children's democratic deliberative agency in self-identification. An essential feature of other human rights regimes is the scope for a claimant to argue one's identity, or foundationally 'I am a human being;' but such a contention is foreclosed when identification as a child is decided uniquely by reference to age. Drawing on Critical Race Theory's narrative method and inspired by W.E.B. DuBois' identity construction, Professor Grahn-Farley advocates a new theoretical understanding of the child and of child rights, cognisant of social interaction and democratic participation. This book will appeal to researchers in child and human rights, and to sociologists, legal theorists and activists.
