    • In the assessment of lubricant performance and also in various other contact applications it is of importance to know the frictional qualities of a surface. Under quasi-static conditions, normal and frictional forces are measured using force transducers but the task is more difficult when loads are transient. The experimental method presented in this paper is based on the analysis of propagating waves in a beam, due to an impact on the end surface. The impact is oblique and therefore a transverse as well as a normal force is generated. The normal force history is measured from the axial non-dispersive wave using strain gauges. Transverse force and bending moment both generate dispersive flexural waves. From the FFT of two transverse acceleration histories, the frictional force at the end of the rod is evaluated using beam theory. The relation between normal and frictional force histories displays the frictional properties at the impact. Preliminary results are presented

    • Owing to increasing demands when designing wet clutches for automatic transmissions, more knowledge about their behaviour is needed. In cars with power shifting automatic transmissions, an engine torque is continuously transmitted through the gear box. Most experimental and theoretical work concerning investigations of wet clutches today uses the inertia type of test apparatus, e.g. the SAE test machine 2. However, this type of test machine has no possibility of investigating the influence of a drive torque from the power supply. In order to investigate the influence of drive torque on wet clutch engagements, a new type of apparatus was built, which can operate with different combinations of inertia and drive torque. This apparatus can perform engagements more similar to those in automatic transmissions. The aim of this paper was to compare experimental outputs obtained using these principles of testing, concerning the influence of drive torque. It was found that the friction characteristics of wet clutches are independent of how the input energy is produced. This means that friction can be investigated with both principles. It was also found that an apparatus using only inertia gives shorter engagement times and higher temperatures than an apparatus including a drive torque at the same level of input energy. This can be explained by different power characteristics. Therefore, when investigating temperatures of wet clutch engagements, one must be careful when translating the results into reality.

    • To increase comfort, performance and fuel economy, a more careful optimization of automatic transmissions is needed. Of special interest is how the temperature influences the engagement characteristics. In order to increase the level of knowledge in this area, a wet clutch test rig including a drive torque and inertia was used. The temperature and the developed energy were varied in order to investigate their influence on the characteristics of an engagement. As a consequence the influence of instant temperature, maximum temperature and instant normal force was also studied. Some of the most important conclusions of the investigation are that both the dynamic and static friction coefficients slightly decrease and the engagement time increases with increasing temperature. It was also found that the static and dynamic friction coefficients are not influenced by energy if the instant temperature is the same. An important parameter that describes the risk of stick-slip is the quotient between the static and dynamic friction. It was found that this quotient decreases with increasing temperature, and thus the risk of stick-slip is also supposed to decrease.

  • Creep transport of grease subjected to low frequency vibrations

    • Creep transport is defined as the velocity of a mass of grease when it is subjected to vibrational and gravitational forces. The method developed to assess this, measured the time taken for the grease submitted to low frequency vibrations to creep, under the influence of gravity, a specified distance down a cylindrical tube. The vibrations were characteristic in frequency and amplitude to those commonly experienced by commercial rotating machinery. Vibrational excitation was found to have a widely varying effect on creep transport of grease, suggesting that this parameter may be important in the selection of greases for specific applications where vibration is present; in contrast, the NLGI number gave almost no indication as to the effect of vibration on a particular grease. A vibration number related to the creep rate is suggested for grease selection. The vibration number correlates to the yield stress of the grease, with higher yield stress correlating to higher creep rate. However, no correlations between creep rate and base oil viscosity or bleed rate were found.

  • Influence of surface roughness on normal-sliding lubrication

    • Contact between machine components can involve normal, sliding and rolling motion, either singly or in combination. Combined normal and sliding motion, which occur for example in the meshing of gear teeth and in heavily-loaded rolling elements, can present problems for lubrication. The purpose of the present experimental study was to investigate how surface roughness affects the lubricant film characteristics under conditions of combined normal and sliding motion. The experimental arrangement consisted of a rotating roller which impacted a stationary ball in the presence of a lubricant. Under the same conditions of normal surface approach, increasing the surface roughness significantly decreased the level of roller sliding that could occur without breakdown of the lubricating film. This behaviour was similar to a step function. Of the several surface roughness parameters investigated, only those which involved the maximum peak-to-valley height correlated well with experimental results. In general, surface roughness had a greater effect on oil film breakdown than did either viscosity or load.
