  • Variationer av predikouppfattningar i Svenska kyrkan. En fenomenografisk undersökning om predikanter och åhörare.
  • 1999
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This study describes, systematizes and analyses the variations of preachers' conceptions of their mission to preach and their listeners' conceptions of the sermon. It does so in a phenomenographic and theological perspective. The conceptions of preachers and their listeners of the mission to preach and the sermon respectively are investigated by way of interviews. The basic issues are what different conceptions of the mission to preach and the sermon can be identified in preachers and listeners. These conceptions and how they are related to various theoretical perspectives on preaching extends the possibilities of applying adequate theoretical perspectives on preaching. The investigation shows that the frame of reference of the preachers concerning the mission to preach and of their listeners concerning the sermon rests on a wide range of conceptions. The result indicates a large spread in various directions regarding needs as well as expectations. The account of the frame of reference of preachers and listeners reveals two main lines of thinking leading to different consequences for the communication of the sermon. On the one hand a rather institutional view of the church can be distinguised whereby the preacher's mission in the preaching situation is to convey a given content to the listener. Preacher and listener are in agreement on the distribution of roles: The preacher teaches while the listener listens. On the other hand a more organic view of the church is discovered whereby preacher and listener co-operate enriching each other. This leads to shared responsibility between preacher and listener concerning the realization of the context and application of the message of the sermon. In the concluding theological analysis the results of the phenomenographic examination are related to different theoretical perspectives on preaching. The investigation indicates that there is a fluctuation between different perspectives with preachers as well as with listeners. There is therefore a need for deepened reflection on the part of the preacher regarding different preaching perspectives and the varying preaching situations when they should be put into practice.

  • Institutionssjälavård i Sverige 1932-1989 : Med särskild hänsyn tagen till fängelsesjälavården : with special regard to pastoral care at prisons
  • 1997
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • During hundreds of years The Church of Sweden has as a State Church been incharge of the pastoral care at prisons, hospitals and military camps. The task has beenobvious and undisputed until the last century. During the last hundred years the Stateand the Church have more and more diverged from each other. During the same timeFree Churches have been established. Demands for neutrality of the State in religiousquestions have been raised both from the State itself and from the Free Churches. Thequestion regarding a widening of the religious freedom and an enlarged equalitybetween different churches became more burning and gave in 1951 rise to a new law onreligious freedom. The author has mainly taken regard of the development of organization andcontent of pastoral care at the prisons, but with side views to the pastoral care at hospitalsand military camps. The author has tried to show, how the Church of Sweden already from the beginningof the century has urged for the appointment of pastors in order to get a functional andindividual pastoral care at the total institutions, but had very little success before 1980.The development has slowly gone towards freedom from state bonds and to anorganization of the pastoral care built on religious freedom and common responsibilityof the churches.

  • Den Wallinska psalmen
  • 1997
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The subject of this dissertation is the hymnography of Johan Olof Wallin (1779-1839). Johan OlofWallin, poet, orator, and preacher, was a member of the Swedish Academy and subsequently archbishop of the Church of Sweden (1837-1839). From 18 11 to 1819 he participated in the work of theRoyal Hymn-Book Committee. The result of the committee's work was the Swedish Hymn-Book of1819 which, due to Wallin's enormous contribution, both quantitatively and qualitatively, has cometo be known as "the Wallin hymnal". Earlier research on Wallin's work as a hymnographer has been largely concentrated on the work ofthe hymn-book committee and Wallin's early development as a writer of hymns. Theremarkably few studies concerning the hymns that Wallin adapted or wrote himself for the hymn-book are all rather cursory. This study is focused on a limited number of hymn texts and categories ofhymns that can reflect several of the most important aspects of Wallin's hymnal work, as well asindirectly shed light on a number of characteristic elements of the 1819 hymn-book as a whole. In each of the five chapters, the shifting interplay of theological themes and hymnographictechnique is captured with the aid of a close reading of the relevant texts. How are these hymnsdesigned? How do they formulate a theological theme? How is what is said, said? Owing toconsiderations having to do with the different kinds of hymns and groups of hymns included in thissurvey, the manner of working with the texts and the sorts of questions posed varies accordingly.
