  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: We investigated with 1HNMR-spectroscopy the effects of habitual fatty fish intake on serum lipiprotein profiles in persons with features of metabolic syndrome.MATERIAL AND METHODS: The participants (n = 105) were randomized into three diet intervention groups. The groups were given different dietary instructions.RESULTS: Increased intake of fatty fish had a significant (p < 0.05) increasing effect on the amount of large HDL-lipoprotein subclasses and their lipids.CONCLUSIONS: Frequent intake of fatty fish may have beneficial effects on HDL-metabolism beyond that assumed to be related to its serum concentrations.

  • In: Duodecim. - 0012-7183 .- 2242-3281. ; 128:20, s. 2085-2092
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Functionalities of biomaterials and drug delivery systems are improved by tailoring their surface properties using modern nanotechnology. Orthopedic implants and invasive electrodes are examples of implantable biomaterials. Biological interactions of orthopedic implants can be optimized by the synergetic effect of surface micro- and nanotexturing with a chemical composition of coating. Further, mechanical flexibility and electrochemical characteristics of invasive electrodes are improved by using micro- and nanotechnology. In nano-size drug delivery systems, surface properties of nanocarriers strongly affect their safety and efficacy. Mesoporous silicon nanoparticles are example of nanocarriers those properties can be tailored for drug delivery applications.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Metabolomics is utilized for comprehensive investigations on the structure, function and interactions of low molecular weight metabolites. The method provides a momentary overall picture of metabolism in the organ system. Investigations into metabolic disturbances aim at understanding the etiology of the disease, studying the effects of therapy, as well as identifying biological marker substances applicable to the prediction of the course of the disease and treatment response. Among psychotic disorders, schizophrenia is in particular associated with significant changes in the metabolism of glucose, amino acids, lipids and energy. Of these changes only some are related to the disease process itself, while some are explained by the effect of drug therapy and habits of life.

  • GRACILE-oireyhtymä--vastasyntyneen vakava mitokondriotauti.
  • 2012
  • In: Duodecim; lääketieteellinen aikakauskirja. - 0012-7183. ; 128:15, s. 1560-1567
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • GRACILE syndrome belongs to the Finnish disease heritage, and is caused by a point mutation in the BCS1L-gene encoding a mitochondrial protein. This leads to dysfunction of the complex III in the respiratory chain. Significant fetal growth disturbance is the primary manifestation. Within the first day the newborn infant develops severe lactic acidosis. Hypoglycemia, elevated serum ferritin and conjugated bilirubin values and aminoaciduria imply mitochondrial liver disease and renal tubulopathy. In Finland, the diagnosis is based on the 232A>G mutation in the BCS1L-gene. No specific treatment is available. GRACILE syndrome leads to early death.

  • Tyypin 2 diabetes--perinnöllinen kohtalo vai hyvinvointiyhteiskunnan rangaistus?
  • 2014
  • In: Duodecim. - 0012-7183. ; 130:22-23, s. 2339-2346
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The pandemic of type 2 diabetes is threatening the entire world population. The number of obese people in the world has quadrupled over the last 30 years. It is clear that the human genome has not undergone such a rapid change, and thus alone does not explain the increased obesity. In fact, the rapidly changing society seems to be on a collision course with the genome. Through gene research we may hopefully learn the mechanisms by which the genome of some people makes them susceptible to type 2 diabetes while simultaneously protecting against the effects of unfavorable environmental factors and diabetes.
