  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article explores the writing and circulation of poems as a 20th-century form of folklore, especially with local newspapers as a base for their publication. Poems about regional health care and about the elk hunting season are chosen as examples in order to focus on how writing poems can be a way of making public statements on matters of common interest in a regional (county) context. The examples show how different subject positions and varying attitudes towards a topic can be expressed through poems. A conscious choice of genre, such as prayer, thanksgiving, praise and accusation, can make positions clearer and give further emphasis to the tendency of the message. I also argue the importance of noticing poems, and local media in general, both in ethnographic research and in the documentation strategies of archives and museums. Poems can be a genre in which it is possible to speak of big and small questions in everyday life; writing them is one form of a local specialist role; and the local circulation of written texts (published or unpublished) is an important part of cultural history, a forerunner of social media. Local newspapers have been one of the few arenas where the voice of the public has been given space.

  • Review (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2015
  • In: Svenska landsmål och svenskt folkliv. - 0347-1837.
  • Review (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Mathias Strandberg’s doctoral thesis De sammansatta ordens accentuering i Skåne- målen (‘Tonal Word Accent and Stress in Compound Words in Traditional Scanian Dialects’) deals with the prosodic system of the dialects of Skåne in southern Swe- den. These dialects have two prosodic features that diverge from the situation in Standard Swedish. Both the dialects and the standard language have two tonal ac- cents, but Standard Swedish has quite a simple rule, assigning accent 2 to practically all compounds, whereas the dialects have a much more complex system, in which accent 1 is very common. The dialects also have compounds with stress on the sec- ond part of the word. Strandberg studies these two phenomena using a large body of archival data, and is able to offer new insights into them. The accentuation patterns of Scanian dialects are largely determined by historical factors, and the author shows that compounds carry a lexical accent, decided by the first part of the compound. For one group of compounds, however – those that are not contracted phrases – he shows that they take a postlexical accent 2 if the first element is monosyllabic. This con- trasts with Standard Swedish, where accent 2 is the rule for all compounds. This in- teresting dissertation further argues that the prosodic pattern of compounds in these dialects is the older one, and the system found in the standard language an inno- vation. The investigation is based on a large set of data and yields clear results, concerning both the synchronic system in the dialects of Skåne and the historical de- velopments behind it.
