  • Contagious errors : Understanding and avoiding issues with imaging drives containing faulty sectors
  • 2008
  • In: Digital Investigation. The International Journal of Digital Forensics and Incident Response. - : Elsevier BV. - 1742-2876 .- 1873-202X. ; 5:1, s. 29-33
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • When using certain tools to image drives that contain faulty sectors, the tool may fail to acquire a run of sectors even though only one of the sectors is really faulty. This phenomenon, which we have dubbed "contagious errors was reported by James Lyle and Mark Wozar in a recent paper presented at DFRWS 2007 [Lyle, J., Wozar, M. Issues with imaging drives containing faulty sectors. Digital Investigation 2007; 4S: S13-5.]. Their results agree with our own experience from testing disk imaging software as part of our work for the Swedish National Laboratory of Forensic Science. We have explored the issue further, in order to determine the cause of contagious errors and to find ways around the issue. In this paper we present our analysis of the cause of contagious errors as well as several ways practitioners can avoid the problem. In addition we present our insights into the problem of consistently faulty drives in forensic tool testing.

  • Computer Forensic Timeline Visualization Tool
  • 2009
  • In: Digital Investigation. The International Journal of Digital Forensics and Incident Response. - : Elsevier. - 1742-2876 .- 1873-202X. ; 6:Supplement 1, s. 78-87
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Computer Forensics is mainly about investigating crime where computers have been involved. There are many tools available to aid the investigator with this task. We have created a prototype of a new type of tool called CyberForensic TimeLab where all evidence is indexed by their time variables and plotted on a timeline. We believed that this way of visualizing the evidence allows the investigators to find coherent evidence faster and more intuitively. We have performed a user test where a group of people has evaluated our prototype tool against a modern commercial computer forensic tool and the results of this preliminary test are very promising. The results show that users completed the task in shorter time, with greater accuracy and with less errors using CyberForensic TimeLab. The subjects also experienced that the prototype were more intuitive to use and that it allowed them to easier locate evidence that was coherent in time.

  • A systematic evaluation of disk imaging in EnCase® 6.8 and LinEn 6.1
  • 2009
  • In: Digital Investigation. - : Elsevier BV. - 1742-2876. ; 6:1-2, s. 61-70
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Tools for disk imaging (or more generally speaking, digital acquisition) are a foundation for forensic examination of digital evidence. Therefore it is crucial that such tools work as expected. The only way to determine whether this is the case or not is through systematic testing of each tool. In this paper we present such an evaluation of the disk imaging functions of EnCase 6.8® and LinEn 6.1, conducted on behalf of the Swedish National Laboratory of Forensic Science. Although both tools performed as expected under most circumstances, we identified cases where flaws that can lead to inaccurate and incomplete acquisition results in LinEn 6.1 were exposed. We have also identified limitations in the tool that were not evident from its documentation. In addition summarizing the test results, we present our testing methodology, which has novel elements that we think can benefit other evaluation projects.

  • Study of the kinetics of enantioselective solid-phase extraction on Tröger’s base molecularly imprinted polymers
  • 2001
  • In: Analytica Chimica Acta. - : Elsevier. - 0003-2670 .- 1873-4324. ; 435:1, s. 115-120
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) selective for Tröger’s base were designed and synthesised, and HPLC-chromatographic evaluation of polymer recognition characteristics was undertaken. Baseline separation of racemic Tröger’s base was readily achieved, and enantioseparation factors (α) of up to 4.8±0.2 were obtained. The high enantioselectivity demonstrated by these materials prompted their use to examine the kinetics and thermodynamics of individual enantiomers in a solid-phase extraction (SPE) process. Enantiomer-dependent differences in the rates and extent of adsorption were observed. Furthermore, the enantiomeric enrichment of racemates was demonstrated in batch studies.

  • The purchasing market entry process—A study of 10 Swedish industrial small and medium-sized enterprises
  • 2006
  • In: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1873-6505 .- 1478-4092. ; 12:4, s. 182-196
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • While an area of importance and concern to managers, international purchasing remains an under researched phenomenon, especially in the context of small and medium-sized firms. Therefore, this article presents a study of the international purchasing market entry processes of 10 industrial SMEs. The findings indicate that managers of SMEs are often reluctant to source abroad. Purchasing markets entries are generally more reactive than proactive, occurring as a consequence of needs for certain products that cannot be found domestically, high domestic costs, unsolicited opportunities and pressures from owners and customers. Nearby purchasing markets typically dominate throughout the process unless cost savings motivate firms to explore more remote markets.
