    • Episcopal sees were established from the early Middle Ages on, at first in Denmark from the middle of the tenth century, and a little bit later in Norway and Sweden. The vast majority of the sees existed throughout the whole of the Middle Ages, although some were moved, and others ceased to exist. There existed different levels of assemblies, from relatively local ones dealing primarily with local matters, to big main assemblies covering a whole province. Eventually, royal courts also appeared. In the later Middle Ages, an appeal system started to develop, probably inspired by the system found at ecclesiastical courts. Lawsuits involving church law were pursued at the local secular assembly. In Norway, this practice of mixed jurisdiction was maintained throughout the Middle Ages. In Sweden, prescriptions from the late Middle Ages imply that the provincial statutes should be put up on the church’s door and read by every parish priest in the church.
